Starting a DELL #1 love-fest with series from the 1960s...got a nice looking The Monkees #1...needs a bit of a dry-clean and press and can score a nice 6.5-7.0 which suits me fine for books creeping up on 60 yrs old.

Another one-off item that whizzed itself my way.
This isn't my favourite era of Superman but this 1961 book had several things going for it.
- it's a 10c cover DC so I'd nip it in the bud if a good deal comes along, even if it looks corny as hell
- I try to get any silver-age Superman books with Mr Mxyzptlk (or Luthor, Brainiac, Bizarro)...
- it's somewhere in the region of VF- which is great for a book 63 years old
- excellent price (if Mile High discounted its FINE copy by 95% it would still cost significantly more...$1257? ridiculous)
- haven't bought an old Action Comics in a while

So I got a ton of comics today. I have a dealer friend, Randy, in Illinois who I trade with frequently. He did a show this weekend in Indiana that was run by my friend Jesse, who is the organizer of Gem City Comic Con and the Gem City Comics FB group that I get a lot of books from. Randy had built up a long box of stuff for me since I saw him last at Gem City last summer, and brought the box to the show for Jesse to bring back to Ohio for me. So I met Jesse at lunch today and picked up the long box, plus the pile of stuff I had gotten from Jesse since in the FB group since I last saw him at the Champion City show here in town in October. It's going to take me a while to process and take pics of all that stuff, but I will post it in bits and pieces over the next few days. Just down the road form where I met Jesse is a Half Price Books, which I stopped at and ended up picking up a handful of things. The first volume of the Legion Showcase (I've never read much Legion, was never really inclined to as I didn't like the 2 issues I had as a kid, but decided to pick this up when I saw it based on all the love it got in the 12 Days posts. I also picked up a bunch of vintage paperbacks, many comics related-The '89 Batman movie novelization, the Tempo Books World's Finest volume that I used to own having picked it up at a school Book Fair as a kid but which got lost in a move somewhere along the line, Journey to Sorrow's End, the novelization of the first Elfquest storyline, plus Han Solo at Stars End (another replacement for a childhood treasured books), the 2nd Lone Ranger novel in the series the novelization of the 70s Buck Rogers movie and a volume of the Executioner. Lastly I got a handful of 50 cent and dollar comics there as well. When I got home, a small ebay purchase arrived, an inexpensive copy of the Greatest Wonder Woman Stories Ever Told with an introduction by Lynda Carter. I have a bunch of the Dc GreatestStories volumes, so I am always open to adding another one. Now off to start processing the books form Jesse & Randy. -M

Ok, I got the books from Jesse processed and photographed. It's going to take a while to do the long box from Randy. Here's what I've gotten via the Gem City FB group since October...most were a buck or two, though some may have been $3. Some Batbooks... Some GA/GL stuff a couple extra Spectre #1 issues and a SA Plas... some Marvel stuff...a Ladronn Cable, the X-Men Classics collecting late SM Thomas X-Men, the last of the 3 Star-Lord reprint collections of the pre-GOTG stuff I needed, a great Vess Spidey cover, etc. and some misc. indy stuff-Sabrina, a red dress Betty & Veronica cover, Disney Ducks, a random Conan and the Grendel Kentucky mini down by Tommy Lee Edwards-he talked about it a bit when he was the guest on the Alex Toth in Depth podcast and it piqued my interest-I got the whole 4 issue mini as a $2 set. That's it for that. Off to start on the long box but it will likely not get posted until tomorrow or the day after. -M

Ok, here's some highlights of the first batch of book from the long box haul yesterday. There's stuff I didn't take pics of that was mostly filler, or some of the extras Randy threw in to fill the box that weren't of interest to me. I still have a second batch to process yet. A Harry Lucey cover on an Archie Annual with Veronica in red to add to my red dress collection... I got a bunch of Batstuff in the box... Another red dress cover with the Sarge Steel and the Americomics issue featuring the Blue Beetles... A Darwyn Cooke variant featuring Supes and the Joker... and the Elektra Timeless cover for Mrs. MRP who is a big Alex Ross fan. the last issue I needed to complete the early 80s Green Arrow mini and some Gold Key Trek issues... more from this batch in a few minutes... -M

Continuing on with highlights from the first batch from the longbox... Some random GL stuff... Groo! I'm not sure what Teen Titans Academy was about, but I couldn't pass up this Infantino homage with Gorillas! by Steve Leiber. I had no idea what this was when I saw it up for sale, but I later learned it was a small press sci-fi title that got one issue, but it has Johnny Craig art. (per MDG correction, it's Jim Craig not Johnny Craig, but I am still curious to check it out). some Jonah Hex (he threw in a bunch of Hex issues because I grabbed these, but I have no affinity fo rthat series, so I am not sure what I am going to do with them yet, so no pics). a couple of misc. Marvel books... One of the newer artists whose work I really dig is Peach Momoko, so I grabbed this variant by her featuring Vampirella (in red) Early Bronze World's Finest, and a low grade SA Plastic Man #1 A large run (#2-36) of Terry Moore's Rachel Rising (I have a #1 and the first trade, and was looking to get the rest of this series-this gave me all but the last 5-6 issues. an issue of Unexpected (the 1st new look issue I believe) and an issue of Wanted reprinting a GA Kubert Wildcat story and lastly a couple of Perez Wonder-Woman issues from the end of his run. I have about a third of the long box and some trades and HC to go through yet. Maybe later today, maybe tomorrow for those. -M

Still processing the longbox, but processed all the collected editions/OGNs and such. I got a large lot of Eisner OGN from Randy. I had a couple in the lot already, but the lot price was excellent, making the per unit cost better than if I just went out and got the ones I was missing by themselves. I got a replacement copy of From Hell as I lent mine out and never got it back, and a copy of Blankets which I always see good buzz about but never read. I got a Tim Bradstreet sketchbook edition and the first issue of Miller & Darrow's Hard Boiled... and a manga version of Batman (no not the Batmanga stuff, which I already own) that looked interesting. The other books were not stuff I purchased, but stuff I won. Randy does a giveaway raffle-everyone who participates in one week's auction is entered to win the following week-over the course of 8 months, I won it a few times. It's not always stuff I am interested in, but some of it is cool. Alrighty, that's it for the trades & OGN portion of the longbox. I've processed the rest, just need to take pics, so maybe later today, maybe tomorrow. -M

Alrighty, highlights of the final batch of stuff from the longbox. Another red dress cover, this one by Russ Heath from one of the 70th anniversary specials Marvel did... an issue of Gazoo (I loved that character in the Flintstones as a kid) and one of the few Mighty Crusaders issues I needed some misc. DC stuff-a gorgeous Cardy cover from the Teen Titans special, and the WW/Tasmanian Devil special another bunch of Batstuff, including the two Retroactive Specials I didn't have The 3 issues of Oni Double Feature that have PCR's adaptation (writer only) of Neil Gaiman's Only the End of the World Again The first issue of Gray Morrow's adaptation of the Sheena movie. an issue of Superman Adventures and a couple of recent DC Specials, the Aquaman anniversary has a cover by Chuck Patton, who I've interacted with recently on social media and is a really cool dude. A large lot of Thieves & Kings (most of those bags/boards have 2 issues in them, one on each side), It's most of the 1st 30 issues of the series with 1 or 2 holes. It was a series I sampled in the early 2000s and really liked but never got around to tracking down. It is a fantasy series about a young thief and sorceress. and lastly, the Vertigo Weird War Tales mini and Special. And that's a wrap of the stuff I got yesterday. -M

Got this package today from Trident Studios, and it’s definitely at least an O’Closcar Contender for best package ever. I grew up with comics in almost every store and regularly present in cereal boxes and candy. As an adult, I’m always on the lookout for finding those nostalgia bombs, and have spent more than I care to admit on ebay for various mini and promotional comics of yesteryear. Well, here came like 30 of them in this set of unauthorized reprints. 17 DC mini-comics from Post cereals 1979-1981, 9 of them from Canada so unseen by me until now. The 8 DC secret origin comics from Leaf candies. 6 Marvel or Archie comics from Bubbles Funnies. And the topper, over 140 Hostess ads from Marvel and DC! Nicely reprinted and even enlarged by like 20-50%, except for the Hostess ads obviously. He sells a couple of these on Etsy and ebay, but can’t sell the DC ones because of DC lawyers. But message him and he’ll sell them to you, they’re about $8-14 each. Might want to hurry if you want the DC ones. ibb.co/qpJmTgB

Oh gosh, I haven't purchased a comic in a long while. Just getting old now and am pretty happy with the little collection I have. As well as don't have the loose coins anymore. Have to tighten the old belt. But the last comics I purchase was an old 1977 Superfreinds, a 1980 Flash and the comic adaptations for Star Wars II: Attack of the clones, which has stunning covers. I would say that was about 11 yrs ago now. Good Heavens, the time flies.
But I wouldn't be against buying another if it was a good price and I really wanted it and had the dough handy.

Great day today at Cal ComicCon. It's my favorite convention as its nothing but comic dealers. It's super old school, in two hotel ballrooms with about 50 dealers. And good comic guests; veterans of the business signing and sketching. I found 2 more of my holy grails; A solid graded first printing of Love & Rockets (I have a signed version, buts its a 2nd printing) and Pussycat! This is a book I've been trying to find for well over 25 years. So rare that they're out there but the seller had both of them right next eachother. Purchased and happy.
