MILLIE (Mother-in-law-looks-in-everything) spied this and evaluated 14 of the 17 Bronze-Age GHOSTS to be in VF shape...and negotiated a good deal She's keeping an eye out for runs in nice shape and with some luck I'll be expanding my DC horror line a bit over the next few months. She got me 75% of the Herbies and is looking at Swing with Scooter next.....

Couldn’t resist this in the dollar bin. Beat to crap, but complete except the back cover.

Took advantage of Lonestar's pop up sale on trades last week (30% off) to pick up a few classic runs in trade, and rounded it out with a handful of stuff from the $1 comics sale... got the last 2 volumes of the SA Green Lantern collections to give me all 4 now. Also grabbed a copy of the Zatanna's Search tpb to finally have a copy of Hawkman 4 in color (I have it the Showcase collection but not in color). I had just gotten a notifier they had a cheap copy in stock when I got the notice of the trade sale (which made it even cheaper). The Dragonstrike is another "official" D&D comic off my want list, and I've not read much of the '03 Aquaman series so I snagged a few on the cheap to sample it. -M

I picked up a Trigan Empire collection that I came across in a used bookstore. I was in two minds whether I should buy it or not, as I have no idea whether it's part of a series or just a random collection of stories from different points in the overall chronology. If it turns out to be the latter, I could well end up buying other books to cover the gaps, rendering this one redundant. However, the price seemed reasonable and I didn't want to take a chance on leaving it until I was able to research it a little more, so I went ahead. It's around 180 pages and has no introduction or explanation of the contents apart from listing the titles.

I encourage everyone who posts here to check out the weekly thread called Top Shelf Friday. It 's run by MRPs_Missives and gives you an opportunity to post the books in your collection that you think are special. It's a lot like this thread but you can showcase the books you already have from the past.

This is the very rare 'Vampirella Special by Jose Gonzales' from 1977. It was the very first collected edition, 88 pages, approx 8.5 x 11 and in full-colour. Getting these above mid-grade is near impossible but my source had 2-3 in VF or better. I think my favourite Vamp story, Death's Dark Angel is included and worth the price I paid (well below the $150 tag...)

Congrats. The Warren special books, this and the Spirit, are getting super rare to find. I paid a little under $100 for mine but its worth it. Great find.

The art is great though

So today was the spring Champion City Comic Con here in town, my second show in 2 weeks, but probably my last until summer. This was is run by my friend Jesse, who also runs Gem City Comic Con in Dayton and the FB auction group I get a lot of books from. Speaking of that group, I picked up both of the books I had gotten there since I last saw Jesse 2 weeks ago, and dropped off a small box of trades I was purging that will give me credit towards those auctions. Here are the 2 books I got from the FB group... I toured the room and started browsing at the dealer in the back corner after circling the room once to see who was there. This dealer had a number of boxes filled with $5 books, but they were 3/$10 so essentially but 2 get 1 free. and I picked up several books from him, including Metal Men #20 (the birthday cake cover), the Verotick Frazetta Death Dealer #3 to complete that series, an Amazing Spider-Man #158 (one of the books I had as a kid-I am trying to recreate that collection), an issue of RBCc with a gorgeous Flash Gordon cover, copies of the Daredevil Love & War and Batman Son of the Demon OGNs and some Bronze Batman stuff... After I paid and loaded the books in my bag, Jesse came up to me and pointed out that this dealer had some quarter bins on the flor that I hadn't seen, so I got a chair and started flipping through the quarter bins. Because I had just bought a bunch of other books, he only charged me $5 for the whole stack (there was like $6-$7 worth of books, so not a huge deal, but free comics is free comics!) Here's what I got form the quarter bins: next I went to the table of Jesse's con travelling partner (they set up together at shows a lot and Bill co-runs Gem City with Jesse). Here I spent the most for any single comics all day-a whopping $5-for Batman/Hellboy/Starman #2 to finish that mini-I hadn't seen it for under $15ish in 4 years) and then raided his dollar bins for 15 more books to make it an even $20 at the table...I was surprised to see a Flash (1987) #1 in there, it's a solid VF. They usually fetch in the $10ish range last I saw. I then walked around browsing through dollar bins and finding deals. One dealer had by 5 get 1 free on his dollar books and I picked up these 5 books, including Jonah Hex #50 by Darwyn Cooke, a book I have been hunting and nly finding in the $15-$20 range since I started (the variant featuring a different Darwyn cover goes for about the same but I didn't find that) I was close to the end of my walk-around money that I brought at this point (not a lot), and was not going to break out a card or paypal, so I only stopped at 1 more table on my way out, to browse their dollar bins. They had a buy 10 get 5 free sale going on with their dollar books, and he threw in an extra book when I miscounted and had 16... All in all a good show, spent some time chatting and catching up with con friends, meeting new folks and dealers, and doing a lot of dollar bin diving. I spent around 2 hours there, found a few books at good prices that finished off a couple of nagging series, and continued the Batbinge I've been on for a bit now. Not planning on doing another show until Gem City this summer, but we'll see. -M

I read this when I was a kid, along with a couple other issues of Spoof. I liked them a lot and still remember some of the jokes - e.g. in the Night Gallery parody, Rod Serling announcing "Here's a story with a surprise ending entitled, 'Man Gets Killed by Falling Safe and Doesn't Know He's Dead!'."

I saw a beat-up but not-too-beat-up copy of Detective Comics #237 on eBay. It’s got a nice glossy cover but it has a few defects, like a 1.5-inch spine split and some slightly ragged edges on the front cover. But it looks pretty nice mostly. We’ll see when it gets here, I guess. Only $150.

It’s the one that has the cover where Batman is training several different Robins, and Robin has a tear in his eye because he thinks he’s being replaced.
