Dollar bin classics from Roy Thomas. If quality was assigned to value these would be worth millions.

Had a GREAT time at Emerald City this year, scoring a big stack of goodies. Most, but not all, came from the dollar boxes at Randy's Readers and at our new favorite, Hils of Comics. Here's what I came home with: Arak, Son of Thunder #11, 13-17, Annual 1 (continuing my run of this most excellent sword & sorcery series) Astonishing Tales #13 (one of a handful of issues I need to complete the Ka-Zar run) Burke's Law #2 (the Dell adaptation of one of my late mother's favorite 1960s TV shows drawn by my man Gene Colan) Captain Savage #13-16 (completing my run) DC Comics Presents #48, 50, 54, 59, 70, 81-82 Detective Comics #439 (I rarely upgrade but this was a gorgeous copy of all-time favorite Batman story "Night of the Stalker" for a buck) Hawkeye #1-4 (the '83 mini) Justice League of America #121, 187, 213-16, 221, 224-26, 238, 243, 247, 249, 253 Magik #1-2 (couldn't find the other two at a reasonable price) Marvel Tales #100 (been looking for this for YEARS because of the new Hawkeye/Two-Gun Kid backup) Master of Kung Fu #23, 37, 81-82, 110 (actually bought half-a-dozen more that, thanks to a cut-and-paste glitch on my shopping list, I already owned) Maximum Security #1-3 (Busiek and Ordway!!!) Maximum Security Dangerous Planet #1 (even more B&O!) Mister Miracle #22 (another accidental duplication, dang it!) Nightcrawler #1-4 (the delightful Cockrum mini starring my favorite X-Man) The Phantom #18 (my second issue of the '60s King Comics run) Plop #4 Red Wolf #5 (completing my run of this superlative Marvel Western) Shogun Warriors #16-17, 19-20 (now I just need #18 to complete the run) Star Hunters #6-7 (completing this run) Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #2-3 (ditto) Vision and the Scarlet Witch #1-4 (the first mini) Wonder Man #1 (1986 one-shot) Surprisingly I didn't buy a single Essential or Showcase volume this time, just the above funnybooks and a hilarious refrigerator magnet from John "Last Kiss" Lustig. Also got a chance to say brief "hello"s to Kurt Busiek, Gail Simone and my old friend Mike Grell (I got a HUG from Mike when I told about my co-authoring gig with Roy!) All in all, this was the best con I've been to in years. Thanks to the lovely and talented Rob Allen for his help and companionship! Cei-U! Can't wait til next year!

Arak and Master of Kung Fu are series (along with All-Star Squadron) that I'm trying to fill in, having shamefully neglected those wonderful series for over three decades. I completed my Shogun Warriors collection last year. Those Hawkeye and Vision and the Scarlet Witch miniseries are quite good, also.

I'm as of right now watching ebay and trying to get my hands on Marvel Treasury Edition 28 & DC Special 27 (Superman & Spider-Man, Batman vs Hulk). They're both FN/VF copies which is usually what I go for on the rare occasion that I buy old comics nowadays. I go for high quality reader copies. I really want these, seeing as how most of these that I've found on ebay are closer to mint and way out of my price range.

I've picked up a few treasury editions lately and it's made me want to get more, especially the original stories like these.

My copy of the new A Sailor's Story edition from Dover Books just arrived. It's really a nice package. Not only do you get the Epic Sailor's Story OGNs, but also a big selection of Sam Glanzman's "USS Stevens" stories and testimonials from writers and artists about Glanzman's work.
Oh, and it's oversized, so the art really stands out. Can't recommend it enough.

FINALLY broke my dry spell (over 2 months without a comic buy!) and purchased the following off ebay. Seller has some more stuff (some FF issues I am hoping to snag for cheap). I wanted some Silver Age goodness and I feel these were a screamin good deal. Most excited by the early Captain Marvel ish, as it helps fill in the earlier issues for me. The Steranko cover on Strange Tales is one I have always liked, so very happy with that as well. The Dr. Strange ish was an impulse buy, as I have very little Strange in my collection and wanted to start with some older stuff.

Just used my last bit of credit to place an order with Lonestar to finish off a few series' runs. Haven't arrived yet, so no pics, but what's on the way is:
King Conan/Conan the King (Marvel) 18, 19, 24, 25, 43-45, 49, 51-54 (finishes off series)
Elsewhere Prince (Marvel/Epic) 6 (finishes series)
Green Arrow ('88 series, DC): 60, 63, 64, 70, 72, 78-80 (finishes off Grell run on book)
Jon Sable, Freelance (First Comics by Mike Grell): 10-16, 20-22, 25, 26, 31-38, 44, 45, 50-56 (finishes off series)
Marvel Two-In-One #35-36 (2 parter finishes off story of Skull the Slayer from his cancelled series)
Sabre (by McGregor & Gulacy; Eclipse Comics): 2, 7-12, 14 (finishes series)
Tor (2008 series by Kubert; DC) 2-5, finishes series
Tor (1975 series by Kubert; DC) 3 (still need 2 issues to complete that one)
most of these are series I have been itching to read but wanted to complete before diving in, so hopefully they will be summer reading. I had the 2 M2in1 issues as a kid, but never read the Skull series proper as I never saw an issue. I picked up the series recently and am in the middle of reading it currently, so decided to pick those 2 back up to put the Skull story to bed so to speak after I finish the series.

No pics, but here is my haul from the Anniversary Sale at Eide's Entertainment in Pittsburgh, PA last weekend; everything listed below was 40% off stickered price.
Avengers - Annual #7 - the Thanos issue. Happy to get it for less than $10. Captain America - 152, 169, 181 and Annual #3 - the Annual was a new book, the others were replacements for beat copies in my collection Conan the Barbarian - 16, 19, 22 and Annual #4 - just filled some random holes. Daredevil - 96, 97, 111 and 116 - the 111 is G+ because the Value Stamp is cut out, but the story is intact; since that book is usually $20 or more (1st app. of Silver Samurai), I was fine getting a reader copy of less than $2.50. These complete my run of DD from 94 up. Doc Savage - 1 - completed this short series from the '70s. Fantastic Four - 110, 116, 117, 118, 121 and 122 - this completes my run of FF from 110 up. Incredible Hulk - 157, 167, 177, 179 and Annual #5 - just filled some random holes, and maybe overpaid a little for Annual #5 (second app. of Groot) Jungle Action - 8 - still looking for a #5 to complete the Black Panther issues Master of Kung Fu - Annual #1 Special Marvel Edition - #16 Star Wars - 39, 44, 50, 94, 97, 100, 103, 106 and 107

^ Nice haul!
I added FF #102, 113 to the ole collection. Also, Daredevil #100 and Cap #107 and this interesting book. I saw the cover and just had to have it. Not sure what interior stories will be like but I am hoping for the best. Average cost per issue was about $7. All in mid grade shape.

If you don't like it, hit me up and I'll take it off your hands. This is the only issue I'm missing from my DC gothic romance collection. DC put out two titles in 1971 to try and capitalize on the gothic romance fad of the time, which was sparked by the popularity of the Dark Shadows soap opera. The other title was Sinister House of Secret Love. Both titles ran four issues before switching to more traditional horror - Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love became Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion with #5, while Sinister House of Secret Love became Secrets of Sinister House with #5. However, both books already had completed stories ready before the title change, so the #5 of both titles are still gothic romance - the direction of the interior content didn't actually change until #6, something I don't think a lot of people collecting these titles realize. Get those #5s! These titles are pretty unusual. They were basically done like standalone graphic novels, with covers meant to emulate romance novels. Instead of the anthology stuff being done in DC's other genre books - and other romance and horror titles - these were almost all full-length, 48 or 52 page stories. The quality varies, but there are some amazing covers and some great interior art as well by the likes of Alex Toth. A great example of both the romance novel covers and the awesome interior content is Sinister House of Secret Love #3. Here's the fantastic cover: And here's the splash page by the great Alex Toth:
