Okay, gang, it's finally time for that most welcome harbinger of the holiday season: the announcement of the ninth/eighteenth celebration of the Twelve Days of Classic Comics Christmas! For those of you newcomers whose intial reaction to the above is a resounding “Huh?,” allow me to elaborate. TDCCC is an annual celebration of the tastes, opinions and quirks of our happy little society of classic comics fans. I began it back in 2005 and, to my eternal shock and pleasure, it has become a tradition, one I wouldn't dream of futzing with. I know I say that every year but every year I mean it. Normally, I try to alternate topics, rotating between characters, creators, and content. When the idea for this year's scintillating subject matter popped into my widdle bwain, however, I loved it so much that I couldn't bear to defer it for a later event. And so, I give you "We're Just Blankety-Blank-Blank... No Good!"*: Your Twelve Favorite Super-Villain Teams For our pusposes here, I'm defining a “super-villain team” as any pairing of two or more nefarious nogoodniks, superpowered or not, costumed or not, in one or more comic book stories, You can pick the entire history of a specific team or, in cases where different baddies have served on its roster at different times, a single incarnation of it You may also cite more than one roster as individual entries. Teams whose members wear matching costumes are eligible, but groups of anonymous aliens, robots, monsters, henchmen, etc., are not. We are excluding comic strips this go-round, folks; funnybooks (and graphic novels) only. Your choices may appear in comic books of any format, any era, any nation of origin with a single restriction. Because it's the Classic Comics Forum, the team must have debuted in a comic published prior to January 1, 2013.** Keep in mind that these are your personal favorites, not what you or anyone else considers “the best,” and remember: you must explain your choice. You are not required to include pictures for your selections but if you do, please post no more than two images per entry. Also—and I must insist on this— if you quote someone else's posts, please edit out the images. The survey will work just as it has in previous years. Each participating poster will draw up a list of their favorite villain teams, ranked 12 (lowest) through 1 (highest). On December 13, I will post my #12 choice, on the 14th, #11, and so on until our #1 choices on Christmas Eve. You must post each selection on the appropriate day's thread, though not necessarily on that day. Late entries (up through, say, the 31st) are welcome. At the end of the survey, the results and a brief statistical overview will be posted with links to the original 12 threads. Rules are subject to tweaking based on participant input for the next week (until midnight on December 2), after which they’re locked in. Any questions, suggestions or (horrors!) criticisms should be posted in this thread. So this is your official heads up: you have two-and-a-half weeks to create your lists before the fun starts. Who's in? Cei-U! I summon the masters of mayhem! * Brownie points to those who can identify the (non-comics) source of this quote. ** I try to keep public rules lawyering to a minimum so I encourage you to contact me via PM if you have any questions about your choice's eligibility.
EDIT (11/26; 1:23 pm PST): Rules modified to specifically exclude comic strips.

Re: this year’s category’s title. I smiled delightedly as I read it. I’ ll be looking for villains who sing, “We’re twice as bloodthirsty As cannibules And wilder than animules Are we.” Thank you, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. Fun category, as always, Cei-U!. I summon the counting house.

I didn’t know there were that many villain teams.

Question time begins.
What about criminal organizations like AIM or The Maggia, for example. Not saying either would make my list, but I want an early ruling.

Not sure how many super-villain teams I really love. At least 2. But it only took about 2 minutes to come up with 12 I kind of like. So that's a good start.

Hm, good - and challenging - topic. A few came to mind immediately, but the rest are going to take some thinking.

I have a question- can I pick the same team but different iterations?

Question time begins. What about criminal organizations like AIM or The Maggia, for example. Not saying either would make my list, but I want an early ruling. I'm inclined to say no. I had in mind villains with solo careers who joined forces, rather than the sort of anonymous cannon fodder I used to shellack when playing Marvel Heroes. So no AIM or HYDRA, no Moloids or Mindless Ones, no Sentinels or N'garai (and their DC, Image, Fawcett, etc., etc., equivalents). However, you all have a week to formulsate a good argument. I'm open to persuasion.

I'm mostly a trembling mass of indifference. It was really intellectual curiosity. Though I am partial to A.I.M.'s bee-keeper suits.

So, is COBRA eligible? I think not based on the answer about AIM and HYDRA, but I thought I’d check to be sure.

This is going to be so interesting. Need to get cracking on my back issues and my OHOTMUs and Who's Whos
Just the sheer amount of short lived duos and three person groups I like... I have at least 20 on my list so far.

So, is COBRA eligible? I think not based on the answer about AIM and HYDRA, but I thought I’d check to be sure. I was going to ask the same. Organizations like COBRA and the Star Wars Empire are vast organizations full of anonymous henchmen, but they also have numerous distinct villains in key roles who were presumeably active prior to joining said organization. I guess this would apply to a group like The Hellfire Club as well. Either way, I'm thrilled by the possibilities of this assignment. Also, did the teamup have to originate on the comic book page?

While Kurt had "villains with solo careers who joined forces" in mind, I assume that supervillain teams who debuted as a team, or who have only appeared as a team, would still qualify, as long as they were all distinctive characters (i.e., the Wrecking Crew, the U-Foes), as would "permanent" duos (such as Punch and Jewelee). I also assume that teams where the members, even if "distinct" in some sense, but basically identical, would be discouraged; I'm thinking specifically of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee here. And "cheats" like the Ventriloquist and Scarface or the Bi-Beast would be very much frowned upon...
