I did look to see if this could go in an existing thread. Please delete if you think it should.
So, if the news is accurate, Henry Cavill as Superman is no more, as is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. You know, I try to avoid clickbait, but not a month went by without seeing YouTube videos such as “Henry Cavill to return as Superman” and “Henry Cavill is done with the DCEU”. Can’t both be right. So I waited for an official word.
I did read that Superman and Wonder Woman had cameos in the forthcoming Flash movie - but that is no more. Speaking of The Flash, wasn’t his move in development hell for a long time?
A friend told me that a Batman Beyond project with Michael Keaton has now been axed. Again, I’ve not looked for official details.
Now, I know the history of Hollywood is filled with development hell issues, cancelled projects, etc. It’d be unfair to single out DC, but it does feel that in a short time (the last 15 years or so), DC has announced and then cancelled so many projects. Hell, I remember a 2007 article which stated a JLA film was on the way, but that didn’t happen until 2017 - and where’s a sequel? How do you only do one solo Superman film in nine years, the guy spawned a genre/industry for goodness’ sake?! Ben Affleck was done with Batman. Then he wasn’t. Is he? I give up.
It seems a chaotic mess compared to the MCU. Profit is king, and I guess WB/DC is doing that, but from a logistical and behind-the-scenes perspective, it feels like the DCEU is the “WCW” to the MCU’s “WWF”. Or maybe they’re competing to knock the AOL-Time Warner merger out of the top spot for incompetence. I don’t know. Maybe I jest. Maybe I don’t.
WB are not making movies to indulge me, but it is getting tiresome. We’re almost in 2023, and it’ll have been ten years since we saw a solo Superman film - and that came 7 years after Superman Returns, which came 19 years after Superman IV. What are they playing at?
I confess I am not 100% up to speed with every behind-the-scenes detail of the DCEU from the mid-2000s to now. And I don’t doubt there are some successes, I hope for many more Shazam movies. Their TV output has been successful. But I really, really would like to see a steady hand behind the DCEU movies. For all the MCU’s faults, it did feel like there was a steady hand - and I don’t recall reading about a *lot* of cancelled MCU projects. Perhaps there were some, but there appeared to be a plan/vision which was near-perfect.
I hope they get their act together. Superman shouldn’t be sidelined as a cameo guy or, to use one person’s words, the “Nick Fury of the DCEU”. I’m bored with reading about cancelled projects. I’m bored with the inconsistency, and how there seem to be conflicting reports about projects at one time or another. Unlike WCW, the DCEU will be around for a long time, I’m sure, but it’s hard to have enthusiasm for something that so often looks like it’s being done on the fly.
This has been an emotive rant with, hopefully, a few facts thrown in. I just wish I could “filter out” my YouTube suggestions, the algorithms know me well, e.g. I follow the Superman Homepage, but that does not mean, dear YouTube, that I want recommendations for unaffiliated-with-DC videos where some random civilian claims to have the inside track on Henry Cavill or the latest WB project. I’m not interested in clickbait that amounts to, “I’m not affiliated with DC, I’m guessing, I know nothing, but thanks for giving my video a view.”
