Wow. I hope Bill Mantlo gets a cut to help pay for his care.

I mentioned this in the Comics Tidbits thread an hour or so ago. There will also be a facsimile edition of ROM # in September.
Its been mentioned its part of an ongoing negotiation between Hasbro and Marvel. Currently GI Joe and Transformers do not have a home as IDW is losing the license. Image's Skybound Studio has expressed interest, but I could see this be an opening move in a larger relationship between Hasbro and Marvel that covers GI Joe, Transformers, and possibly Micronauts (at least for collected editions of previous material if not new material). Who knows, nothing definite has been said on the GI Joe/Transformers license in a while.

I used to have the actual #1.
This is great news! A fun series and I guess a guilty pleasure. I'm sure I won't love it as much as I did then but it will sure be nostalgic.
Now I hope for Micronauts...

I had Rom #1-#75. Loved all that great Sal B art. And the later Ditko stuff too.

I think the test for how long term this is, or what the nature of the deal will be is whether the Rom run gets put up on Unlimited or not. When Marvel acquired Star Wars, all Star Wars comics form all publishers were made available on Unlimited. When Conan was acquired, none of the Conan material was made available on Unlimited, including the then current material. The Fox stuff has been a hybrid deal, the new current Aliens and Predator stuff has been made available on Unlimited, but not the older material from other Publishers. Apes looks like it will be the same. If the Hasbro/Rom stuff makes it to Unlimited, I think it will be a sign that is is a deeper long term relationship being forged in the deal. If it's just print collections of reprint material, I don't think the deal will reach far or last long. It would be just a deal to get the material back in print so both can make some money from it, not a push to revive Rom or other Hasbro properties as a growing concern. It's going to be a wait and see thing though, as we just got the announcement today. The first real test will come in Sept/December when the facsimile edition sees print and when it passes the three month window for print books to hit Unlimited, Marvel regularly makes their facsimile editions available with other new comics from the same release date. We will see if Rom gets put up on Unlimited in December.

I started buying with issue #19, and had most of the rest of the series up to the end. I especially liked the issues Akin & Garvey inked. I don't think Sal liked their inks as they were very heavy, but I thought it looked great. After the Wraith war ended the series kinda tread water, and the Ditko art was awful. But I'll probably buy however many omnibuses this takes, anyway.
Did they ever do any Mantlo Hulk omnibus? I don't think they did, and it's surprising. Maybe if they hurry up they can include the Rom issue in that.

You can see were Sal thought the Akin & Garvey inks over powered his pencils. Doesn't mean we readers couldn't like the combo. Like brother John and Alcala.

ROM ran as a back-up strip in Star Wars Monthly in the early 80s over here in the UK. I used to think it was as dull as dishwater, but the art was always good. This is great news for those who have been wanting an Omnibus for decades.

ROM is one of those series I've long been aware of and been told to read on numerous occasions. I alternate between believing I'd probably love the series if I gave it a chance and believing it was one of those "you had to be there at the time" comics that wouldn't do much for me at all.

I wouldn't call it a must-read but it was fun and I enjoyed it as a kid/teen. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to someone who wasn't "there at the time" but maybe pick up the facsimile #1 and see what you think?

Rom is not an all time great series. It was a fun series that they did as much as they could with a lame toy. But it was a fun read, month after month and Sal always delivered on the art.

I heard over at CBR that Marvel now has rights to all the Hasbro stuff. So expect some GI Joe and Transformers as well.

How does Micronauts compare? Could it be described the same way? I've never read either series, but I was always kinda curious about them as a kid.
