Wow, that's some crazy action stuff! Makes me sad about the Kai being gone all over again, though... even this guy thinks she should have been back

s2 e11: Rivals
Plot: A little old lady with alot of money spills her guts to a wandering con man... luckily, Odo was on the case. Meanwhile, O'Brien builds a Star Trek Racquetball court (no idea what they called it), only to find Bashir is an expert...pretty funny. He gets home and vows to get back in shape and get him. Bashir, of course, felt bad wiping the floor with him, and told Dax about it.
While in the gulag, he gets some sort of little orb thing that seems to give you good luck from a fellow prisoner that dies in lockup. Quark tries to buy it, but suddenly the guy doesn't want to sell it... it's all very mysterious.
Rematch at the raquetball court, and Bashir clearly tries to let O'Brien win, and he gets REALLY mad.
The con artist (martis) decides to open his own Casino/Bar, using a Bajoran widow as a starter. Quark is extremely pissed off. He tries to assert he has an exclusive contract, but Sisko won't hear it. Then he steals Rom, too, with a promise of partnership.
Martis continues to string the little old lady along, promising to help her get an investor for he lifelong dream, which she came up a bit short on.
Back at the court, Bashir kills him again, and tells him he won't play anymore. O'Brien tells Quark his problems...and Quark gets his wheels turning.
Sisko and Kira find out there's a strange rash of minor 'unlucky' accidents. Over in Martis' bar, suddenly everyone wins at once... and he's a bit confused.
Quark, after O'Brien's sob story, decides to promote a rematch, and of course, collect bets on it... promoting it like a boxing match, and promising 1/2 the take to Bajoran orphans.
The bad luck continues, and Sisko sets Dax on it to investigate. Martis is very sad as he paces his empty bar, and then his Bajoran widow catches him with another woman and throws him out. It seems his luck has turned as well.
O'Brien prepares for his match. and Keiko gives him a pep talk, and a token of her esteem. The Doctor gets ready as well.. Quark brings Bashir a special drink from the monks, but he's suspicious, and of course analyses it. It's, naturally, a micky. So Quark instead tries to convince Bashir to throw the match.
The match starts out with O'Brien in control, and he's suspicious. He stops the game, and they realize that somehow no matter what happens the ball comes right back to him. Dax comes up with a pseudo-science explanation with Neurtrino rotation that someone at Marvel should take note of to explain the Scarlet Witch's powers.
Sisko and Dax got to Martis, find out about the little doohickeys, and blast them... meanwhile Odo takes him back into custody for a previous con. It turns out the rich old widow was also a con artist, so Martis is in jail AND broke. Quark has a good time having him grovel for cash to leave the station.. The end!
Cute episode, but one emminently skippable... really just a love letter to fans of Chief O'Brien.
Notes:
- Boy, that con artist guy is a BAD actor. He was much better in the Princess Bride. I guess bombastic is a state of mind... doesn't really work for a con artist who listens for a living. Maybe he just had an off day.
- O'Brien is the man.. not sure how Shax can hate him. This episode is definitely Keiko's finest hour. Though I do wonder where their daughter is through all this.
- I find it hard to believe that an extremely competent con artist would use a gambling device that he didn't know EXACTLY how it works. I guess we're too infer he's NOT competent after all.
-- So, I guess the gadget is a really magic 8 ball?
-- Quark is at his slippery best in this one.. .he's always entertaining.

s2 e12 'The Alternate'
Quark is selling bits of a famous dead Ferengi (As they do), when Odo finds out the guy is alive. Quark protests his innocence, of course. Odo gets a visit from his 'mentor'.. the Bajoran who helps Odo adjust to humans. He's looking for a runabout to investigate a lead on Odo's origins.
Meanwhile, Jake doesn't want to do his homework.
Sisko, of course, agrees. Dr. Mora (the mentor) tells Dax some stories from Odo's past... which, of course, Odo doesn't like much.
The get to the planet, and find the ruins of a civilization...and find a plant-like Odo-ish life form. When they take a monument, the planet seems to sorta attack them, and they have to run away.
The Odo-like plant escapes overnight, or is stolen.
O'Brien finds it's remains in a vent... it had turned into a slimy goo... Dr. Bashir thinks it needed more CO2 that DS9 hads Of course, it's not REALLY dead, and it attacks Bashir as soon as he's alone. He gets it with a laser scalpel and runs away.
After some investigation, Dr. Mora thinks the sample is Odo himself, and they argue. Odo loses control and vanishes. Dr. Mora volunteers as bait to get him to come back, and it works. They drop the force field to find Odo back as himself. Apparently, he was sick, but he's better now. He makes piece with Dr. Mora and that's it.
Ugh.. terrible, non-sensical episode that doesn't seem to have contributed anything to the ongoing Odo identity mystery. --------
-- Dr. Mora sounds like he considers Odo a particularly well trained pet more than a person.. not good.
-- Dax's hair is HUGE for some reason
-- O'Brien waxes poetic as he crawls through the vents, hoping Keiko doesn't get mad at him... it's cute.
-- Wow, that's some really bad special effects on the shape shifter thing... it looked like something out of Davey and Goliath.
-- Yup, Dr. Mora definitely thinks Odo is a pet, and wants him back... I suspect it's all a set up

I actually remember this episode. Good backstory on Odo that remains adhered to as the series goes forward.

What I didn't get is earlier there was Cardassian guy that claimed to to pretty much what the Bajoran guy was.. they even talked about the hair and ears thing.. so does that make this a retcon? Seems unlikely there would be a Bajoran AND a Cardassian working together... especially during the occupation.

I honestly don't recall which of the two guys I'm recalling (I only remember one who discovered him as a liquid and figured out he was intelligent, thus raising him in a lab), but Odo was essentially treated like the pet of Terok Noir. While he found it demeaning, most saw him as a faithful pet, and do even Gul Dukat takes on a semi-fatherly demeanor around him.

That's the thing.. BOTH guys said that. The Bajoran guy said he found him as a puddle of goo.. but I'm pretty sure the Cardassian guy did, too. Both guys claimed to have taught him humanoid form... and both have his slicked back hair style. In fact, the Cardassian guy kinda looked like him, IIRC. The main difference was the Bajoran seemed to think of him as a loyal pet/child that he raised, while the Cardassian treating him more like an animal trained to do tricks (which I remember they discussed). I supposed one could assume the Bajoran worked with him first, then the Cardassians, when they realized what he was, took over. That would mostly make sense. Yeah, that's what I'll go with

Yeah, that's what I'll go with Yeah, the Cardassian is the one I'm thinking of. I don't think it's too hard to accept that the Cardassian discovered him, but that the Bajoran took him more under his wing. Inevitably, more than one scientist worked in that lab. Might have been nice for this episode to have referenced the previous guy, though.

I agree.. and, if fact, it's not too hard to accept that 2 different guys in the same lab would try to take credit. What IS hard to accept is that a Bajoran and a Cardassian were working together on it during the occupation.
It seems much more likely the Bajoran was given the task because it was though to be menial and/or unimportant, than a Cardassian took over when it got interesting.
In fact, now that I think about it, that actually kinda justifies it not being mentioned... Odo clearly didn't like that time of his life (as per that episode) and the Bajoran would likely not really know about it.

Also, the sample wasn't Odo, sick Odo "liberated" the sample to prevent Mora from doing to it what he did to him, and it then died.

Also, the sample wasn't Odo, sick Odo "liberated" the sample to prevent Mora from doing to it what he did to him, and it then died. See, I thought the sample broke itself out, and infected Odo... I guess infecting him on the surface and 'calling' him for the rescue makes sense as well. I really felt Mora was very denigrating, I guess it could be a father/son thing, but if so, it's a pretty messed up.

Are you sure it wasn't just some commanding officer who viewed Odo as a favorite pet?

Well, not I'm not sure, actually. I remember very distinctly a Cardassian talking about how he was the one that suggested Odo be an investigator...and how he used to do tricks for the Cardassian commander. it was the episode where pre-commander Kira was a suspect, and she had to lie to him to protect her underground people.
YOu know, I think it's the episode where Quark helps the Bajoran chick on the surface get a note out of some cargo hold. I think it was 'Necessary Evil' (the episode)
