Ep. 7 Rules of Acquistion
Dax is fleecing Quark and his friends in Tongo (some sort of Ferengi Poker), when one of his waiters(Pel by name) give him a good idea for taking advantage of his customers, when the Grand Nagus interrupts and wants Quark to be his chief negotiator in the Gamma quadrant.
Upon of his arrival, the Nagus gets a warning from Sisko and Kira to be nice, and that the Dozai (some race from the Gamma Quadrant) are fairly treated. The Nagus offers a bribe, then tries to sell it, and Sisko makes him stick to it.
The plan seems to be selling them wine to get them in the door. Pel points out that while he could make alot of money, he could also be the scapegoat. Quark hires the Pel to be his assistant (much to his brother's chagrin). Turns out said waiter is a woman dressing as a man.
The Dozai are very grumpy, and want to talk only to the Nagus... they threaten, but Quark's new assistant gets them to at least think about it.
The Nagus tells Quark to do better, and the 'waiter' comes to his aide... Dax talks to her, and she tells her about her secret. Dax gets her to admit that she's in love with Quark, which is an added complication to her charade.
The Dozai refuse the Nagus' new terms and leave.. so Quark goes after them.
Back at the station, Odo tells Rom to fight for his brother, and he searches his quarters, only to find the back up fake ears.
At a Dozai party, Quark tries to play hard ball... and it doesn't quite work, so they stay overnight. Pel freaks out (due to her secret) they have a drink (not sure how that's supposed to help).. and Pel makes the move, but gets interrupted by the Dozai.
Apparently the Dozai are smal fry, and they get pointed towards the Dominion... which was what the Nagus was looking for in the first place. Once back, Rom tells Quark that Pel is really a woman, and he faints.
Quark offers Rom the bar to keep the secret, and wants to give Pel cash to leave and continue her deception elsewhere. She makes a last plea to Quark to run off to the Gamma Quadrant together, but he refuses.
Pel confronts the Nagus, who is very upset, but Quark sticks up for her. The Nagus agrees to leave Pel alone, but at the cost of the gamma quadrant deal.
Notes:
-- Ferengi Rules of Acquistion are awesome.
-- I've always though the Ferengi dissing their women folk was a bit too over the top. It'd be awesome if they were all secretly hen pecked husbands.
-- I think the Nagus thinks he throughly bribed the DS9 staff.. which is pretty funny.
-- LOL! ask and you shall receive.
-- I guess they ran out of head bump... the Dozai look like rejects from a Road Warriors convention.
--The Naga trying to pick up Kira is pretty funny.
-- Apparently, the Dozai are the Ferengi crossed with the Kligons... too bad they look so goofy, as that would be kinda interesting.
So we have the age old conflict between tradition and heart... and very well done, too. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess she doesn't come back, which is a greatly lost oppertunity. Hell, they could have spun that into it's own series.

s2 ep8
Necessary Evil
Quark goes to Bajor, and visits with an 'old friend' named Pallra. She asks him to retrieve a box for her... seems ominous.
As he's doing so, Rom shows off his thieving skills, much to Quark's chagrin. They get the box, and of course Quark opens it, to find a list of names. Rom goes to get something to copy it with, Pallra's associate shoots him and takes the paper, saying 'She knew you couldn't resist'.
As Bashir tries to keep Quark from dying, Rom spills the details to Odo and it connects to his first case, when he first met Kira and Gul Dukat... apparently Kira was the top suspect of said case, which Odo didn't solve, but he did clear her.
Odo goes to Pellra, but she denies everything. He mentioned the one partial name to her, and Kira finds the guy, and finds out he was killed shortly after he mentions it. Odo springs into action.
As he gets close, the man Pellra employed to kill Quark tried to finish the job, but Rom interrupts and sounds the alarm just in time.
It turns out Kira knew about the list, and it was a list of Bajorans collaborating with the Cardassians... she admits she was the perp on his first investigation that he never solved.
Kira begs forgiveness as the episode ends.
Notes:
-- 5 bars of Latinum is a pretty small fee for an illegal act, it seems... I guess Quark is just a big softie
-- Odo keeping a log... priceless.
-- Rom is awesome is this episode.. first time he's really had any usefulness or interest.
-- loved the flashbacks... very cool seeing the mood and setting of the station in the Cardassian days. Very fitting his first contact with Quark was him lying to him about an investigation.
-- It's really a shame that the best episodes don't include 1/2 the main characters... Kira, Odo, Quark and the minor characters really carry things.
-- Odo did the Columbo!! "Just one more thing...." I love it!
This could have been a great episode, but leaving such HUGE lose ends (like whether or not they actually get the Pallmra) is getting to be an annoying habit. I assume the Kira-Odo thing will resolve itself in time... hopefully they won't just never mention it again.

I guess Quark is just a big softie It's hard to tell, as Quark is always trading in seemingly astronomical amounts, but it was always my impression that even one bar was a pretty big deal. Rom gets SO much better! Absolutely! I lose track, between the actual episodes and the books, but I'm pretty sure we get at least one more flashback from this time period later in the series. I think the writers are still struggling to figure out who these characters are and, more importantly, how they interact with one another. Writing a show with more flawed, edgy characters is one thing; deciding how they should work together is another. I don't recall if they ever come back to this specific incident again, but the fact that Kira and Odo were on different sides during the occupation absolutely does come back and gets resolved. |

You know, about the Latinum thing... why does anyone CARE? I understand they wanted the Ferengi to be uber-businessmen, but how is money relevant, really, in a world with replicators? Should it be all about the resources needed to run those (diluthium, in the old days.. not sure what does in the DS9-verse).

You know, about the Latinum thing... why does anyone CARE? I understand they wanted the Ferengi to be uber-businessmen, but how is money relevant, really, in a world with replicators? Should it be all about the resources needed to run those (diluthium, in the old days.. not sure what does in the DS9-verse). What makes Latinum so valuable is that, in addition to being rare, it cannot be replicated. I forget where that was established, but it might have preceeded DS9. It also seems implied by the kinds of things Quark sells (even the non-illegal items) that there's a lot most replicators cannot duplicate or that there's some way to determine an object's authenticity. Otherwise, I'm sure we'd have seen an episode where Quark was mass replicating the items he was selling as "rare". I'd assume the advantage of gaining latinum is comparable to an illicit businessman wanting to be paid in cash. It allows you a lot more currency that cannot be traced easily. If Quark dealt in Federation credits (or whatever they use when dealing with outside species) he'd raise eyebrows when earning and spending beyond a certain level. |

OK, that kinda makes sense, but the Federation economy mostly seems predicated on usefulness, and if it's not useful..
I don't know that the Federation HAS any sort of currency.. they never mention it that I recall, or reference any sort of pay, raises, etc. When they do first contacts, they mention establishing trade, but rarely what, until they're just giving supplies to be nice.
I know back in Enterprise, they talk about having trade goods, but even there I don't think there's any currency.
It's not a huge deal, as I can appreciate it mostly is a Ferengi thing, but it just struck me when I was thinking about the episode.

They mention "credits" a lot. Generally in phrases like "transporter credits". I picture Earth as having no $, but credits for energy intensive services/products like transporters, holodecks, off-world transport, etc....probably why many still bother working. I bet most of the waiters at Siskos dads restaurant are totally hooked on holodeck porn... |

Ep. 9 Second Sight
Plot:
Sisko is ruminating about his wife on the 4th anniversary of her death, and Jake has a bad dream, which they discuss. Later, Sisko meets a girl named Fenna... strange timing. She's alien, alluring and mysterious.. sure to be trouble.
Meanwhile, it's a 'business as usual' type episode.. first time we've seen O'Brien in a while, just doing his job, and, in fact, I think it's the first time we've seen Ops in a while.
A visiting Scientist is planning to make re-igniting a star, as the crowning achievement of his terraforming career.
Sisko has a 'date' with his girl, and goes to Odo to figure out who she is, since she keeps disappearing. Dax wants details, and Sisko tells her he'll tell her when there's something to tell.
Jake notices his dad ruminating, and tells him he's OK with it.
Not surprisingly, Bashir loves the scientist, and Kira hates him. After holding court a bit, and hosting the bridge crew for dinner, he introduces his wife, which is the girl Sisko likes, but she's in a totally different style of clothing, a different hair style, and acts as if she'd never met Sisko.
Sisko confronts her with the name she gave him 'Fenna', and she claims he's got her confused with someone else.
Odo then tells him that she doesn't exist. Even Quark notices Sisko's distress, but he refuses the bartender's ear. As he heads back to his quarters, Fenna turns up again. Siski confronts her, and she literally vanishes in from of him.
Sisko decides to go on the trip to re-start the star, so he can get on the scientists ship and try to sort out the mystery. They talk about his wife, but there's now more particular infomation to be gaining.
He returns to his quarters on the ship and Fenna appears there.. Sisko calls Dax and scans her, and finds out she's not real, only energy.
They go to seel Nadell (the scientist's wife), and she's in shock and dying. Apparently Fenna is a psychic construct of Nadell.. Dr. Seyetik (the scientist) recognized her right away.
Apparently he's had several wives, the all get tired of him...but Nadell's culture doesn't allow that, so instead she manifests a separate personality.
While Sisko tries to sort things out, Dr. Seyetik decides to ride the supernova, since there will be no more challenges for him, he chooses to commit suicide to see his wife free, and so he doesn't get bored... they watch him do so, and the star re-fires.
His wife recovers, but 'Fenna' no longer exists. Nadell heads back to her homeworld to stay there. She apologizes to Sisko and leaves.
Notes:
--Jake went from potentially angst-y pre-teen to all american teenager off camera, it seems.
-- Timeline wise.... this is now after then end of TNG.. around the time 'generations' takes place, and 'Voyager' begins.
-- I don't think brooding fits Sisko very well... it's weird.
-- Lots of Dax this episode.. maybe that's why it's so un-interesting.
-- Not a heroic death, exactly, but certainly a dramatic one... and very fitting for the guy... nice job for a one-off character.
Very forgettable episode, unless you really like Sisko, but I suspect (as usual) this will never be mentioned again, so really a skippable one as well.

Ep. 10 'Sanctuary'
Plot - Kira's having a bad day, when a ship comes through the worm hole. Their in bad shape, so they get beamed aboard. After universal translator issues, we find that they're from a matriarchal society from the Scria that are in trouble. They apparently are adrift, looking for a mythical planet on the other side of the Eye of the Universe.
Kira makes friends with the woman in charge (the men are barely more than breeding stock, it seems), and seems to be trying to make her into a leader. They starting finding other Scrians, and the station is quickly full of them. Sisko is extremely happy with himself.. I think an underdog will do.
Nog pranks the Scrians, and Odo takes him in, where he accidently mentions weapons dealing, but Quark, of course, denies it, and uses the oppertunity to whine to Odo about the Scrians.
Meanwhile, Haneek (the first Scrian there) is sorta voted the leader, she's hesitant, but willing.. she starts looking at star charts. Back at Quarks, Nog gets into a fight with the Scrian kid he pranked eariler, and Quark throws them out.
The Scrians decide their planet is Bajor (big shock!), which they want instead of the nice empty planey Dax finds. The Bajorans refuse, of course. They are afraid the Scrians will fail, and they'll feel like they have to help.
Kira tries to make nice with Haneek, and she has no interest... Kira's grovelling is interrupted by Tumak (Haneek's son and the kid Nog harassed) steals a ship that's barely working and heads to Bajor. While DS9 tries to get the Bajorans to calm down, Tumak opens fire, and gets destroyed when they fire back.
Haneek delivers Kira a lecture on the way out, which hits home extremely well.
What a great episode!! I really, really hope the Scrians are the first to break the pattern of dangling plots and they are mentioned again.. we really need to find out how their planet works out. Great insight into the Bajorans. It also could be some good development for Kira.. I think the last of her idealism just got buried.
-- 'Eye of the Universe' is a cool name for the worm hole.
-- The Scria's myth of utopia sounds alot like they used to live on Bajor... I wonder if that's going to be it. *ding*
-- First mention of the Dominion!!!
-- The Nog and Jake scene was totally random.. totally out of place, it seemed. I guess they just needed to lay the foundation.
-- That sticky uppy hair the Scrians have reminds me an awful lot of the Centari (only the opposite gender)
-- The Bajoran government sure is shown as jerks here, refusing to help people in the same situation they were in.

I really, really hope the Scrians are the first to break the pattern of dangling plots and they are mentioned again.. oops At least we have that. The Dominion won't make their move until the end of the season, though. I'm not sure the Bajoran government is ever shown in a particularly positive light on DS9. In fact, I'm not sure any government is (including the Federation). |

*sigh* You know, the novels would be an excellent venue for them to tie up some of these loose ends... be it a small mention (Someone in the main cast sending or receiving a message), or building a whole story around them.. it's making me itchy  I know you (and others) have said they make sure they go out of their way to show that the Bajorans aren't the 'good guys' exactly, I'm concerned they're going to go too far and make me root for the bad guys |
