The Heralds of Apocalypse #1 or to use it's full title:
X-men: Before the Fall - Heralds of Apocalypse #1
that's too long.

What Happened Before: There is this series called X-Men Red that I'm really liking, but it keeps getting interrupted by crossovers and other mini-titles and one-shots, like this. This is basically an issue of X-Men Red, but as various one-shots were either not collected or collected in some other unrelated trades, I couldn't guarantee that this would show up in the X-Men Red trades that I was reading, so I bought the one-shot.
What Happened Before (but now in the actual comic): A thousand of years ago, the mutant known as Apocalypse ruled with his wife Genesis over the living island of Okkara where a society of mutants lived in peace. This peace was broken when the world was invaded by the Demon race of Amenth. During the war, the island of Okkara was split in two, Krakoa (which remained on Earth) and Akkaro (which was drawn into the dimension of Amenth, taking with it Genesis, their children and most of the inhabitants of Okkara. Apocalypse remained behind to prepare Earth against a new invasion while his family bought time.
In recent years, mutantkind united on the island of Krakoa and Apocalypse joined them, now taking the name ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ (as close as we can get with this font). Just in time to repel a second invasion of Amenth, now lead by his wife Genesis. During X of Swords, the Krakoans fought the Arakkii and Apocalypse managed to negotiate a peace: he would leave Earth with his family to Amenth, while the island of Arakko including its inhabitants would return to Earth, free from the demons.
Plot:
On Amenth, ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ now tries to teach his philosophy to one of the demons, but is interrupted by his wife, who has now conquered all of Amenth and wishes to return to Earth.
She has found out that the people of Arakko were nearly extinguished by Uranos and one of the mages of Orchis, the anti-mutant organisation appears to convince her to save her people. Genesis and ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ duel and disagree on paths to be taken, but ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ gives her access to the world of Arakko so she can march her armies there.
When she leaves, ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ sets out on his own path, taking with him the demon he was teachuing.
The Good: I've said it before, but the post-Krakoa version of Apocalypse is the most interesting the character has ever been, he now has motivations, his philosophy is more complex than the simple "the strong survive"-mantra.
He has taken the name ▪︎-|A|-▪︎ because Apocalypse has become synonymous with Destruction, while the word really means Revelation and that original meaning fits more with his current worldview.
Ewing also remembers what his mutant power was, something Hickman and Howard seemlingly forgot or just ignored, having him use just magic spells and I always liked Apocalypse's mechanical-like shapeshifting.
It also fleshes out Genesis a lot, revealing what was offered to her by Amenth and why she chose their side in the end. Their four children, we learn a little about (the reason for their names of War, Death, Pestilence and Famine), but they have a small role in the whole story.
The Bad: Not so much bad as weird: This is called the Heralds of Apocalypse, but the story focuses on Apocalypse and Genesis. Their children barely get any lines, maybe the title is meant to refer to Genesis and Apocalypse themselves as the heralds of Revelation, but it's kinda a stretch.
And like usual with these type of stories lately, it makes no sense without context. It builds on the ongoing stories in X of Swords and X-Men Red, but would be incomprehensible to a new reader.
Overall: I like it for fleshing out two characters a lot more, especially one that had received little characterisation so far. But it's a tiny piece in a very large story so it won't exactly draw in new readers nor can I recommend it to casual fans.
