Nightwing #106Written by Tom Taylor Art by Stephen Byrne Summary: A secret pirate ship with links to Bludhaven's founding has a secret waiting deep in its hold for Nightwing but Heartless wants it too. Plot: Taylor's latest issue of Nightwing isn't a horrible issue but it definitely suffers from the Knight Terrors event over the last two months as there is just zero momentum going into this so Taylor has to start from the ground floor to build this new arc. There's not a lot of action here, no big jaw dropping events or even a whole lot of character moments...it's just a whole lot of set up for this new pirate story. And while the whole pirate angle is fun there's a lot here that drags it down for me, for one I hate Ric so tying those stories into this made me groan and then we get more Heartless(who I also hate) and somehow he knows about this secret treasure being held for Nightwing even though Dick had no idea it existed until last issue so Heartless' inclusion just seems to make no sense. That said, I do like pirates and Taylor has written Dick really well so far so I'm going to give him some leeway on this snoozer of a start. Art: Stephen Byrne certainly isn't on par with the series regular artist Bruno Redondo but his slightly cartoony style fits the playful tone well so I'm not completely turned off. Grade:6.5/10

Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #1Art and Story by Rafael Grampa Summary: A serial killer is on the loose, and while the murder victims seem random the clues draw Batman to linking them to...Bruce Wayne!? Plot: I've been a big fan of Granpa's rough, sketchy art in the past so I was really excited to get my hands on this when it was announced...but now that it's finally here I have pretty mixed feeling. While I did love the overall noir mood and the actual detective work we saw Batman do on the page here there were far more elements that I really detested as well. For one I've never had a fondness for the plot idea that Batman needs to get rid of his public Bruce Wayne "persona" in order to be a better hero, Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same and both sides are important pieces of the story so it just shows a drastic misunderstanding on the writer's part if he thinks one is more important than the other. And even if the plot develops in a way to show us that Bruce growing as a person and seeing that trying to stop being Bruce Wayne is a bad decision it doesn't help much as we've seen that story before and there isn't a lot of room to do to much different with that. On top of that Batman interior dialog is pretty unhinged at times, I honestly thought we were getting the villain's view on things at the opening of the book but nope it was Batman's which just felt so out of character. There were some other bright moments, I really liked the characterization of Alfred and how he's trying to convince Bruce not to loose his public identity, the interactions with Gordon were fun and the new villain Crytoon not only had a cool visual look but his style being to mimic a deranged cartoon character was entertaining. So all in all while definitely not my favorite take on Batman there's enough (just barely) to make me want to keep reading. Art: To start with I'll say this: Rafael Grampa's style is definitely an acquired taste and your enjoyment of this book is largely going to be swayed by how much you enjoy(or don't) his unique visual style. He has a rough, sketchy style that is at times reminiscent of Paul Pope and his figures have a doughy look to them that feels inspired by Frank Quietly but he's like both of them set to Eleven. It's darker and grittier than Pope or Quietly ever were and there's a level of graphic violence that makes even me kind of squeamish at times...but for me I still love it. There's a fun energy to the action that is fun to see and the emotions on the characters faces are easy to read. So even though I have misgivings about the story the art kind of makes up for it.
Grade:7/10

Picked up Wonder Woman #1 today. Definitely interested in where Tom King is going with this new status quo. Murder mystery, Sgt Steel, xenophobic hysteria manipulated by a mysterious villain pulling strings behind the scenes, and some beautiful artwork. Nothing necessarily groundbreaking but entertaining enough to pick up the next issue.

Grade:6.5/10 I am also pretty sick of Heartless, but the pirate treasure they teased a few issues ago was definitely intriguing... I feel like we need a crossover with Nightcrawler! Dick Grayson/Kurt Wagner: Shores of Night By Si Spurrier and Tom Taylor (Hey, A guy can dream....) It's definitely sad about there being a fill in artist.. hope its not for the whole arc! (this is without having read it yet, just that redondo is so good...)

Here’s what I got this week ...
Hey Kids! Comics #6
Catwoman #57 Wonder Woman #1 Detective Comics #58 facsimile (first Penguin)
Catwoman #57 has some bad art. Selina looks normal height in most of the scenes, but when she’s with Jason Todd, she looks to be a little over four feet tall. Is Jason Todd supposed to be a storm giant or something?
I mostly liked Wonder Woman #1. But I really hated that Sarge Steel’s task force was able to massacre individual Amazons so effortlessly just because of some magical advanced weaponry. It seemed like a very lazy way to get to the part of the story the writer wanted to tell.

Nothing necessarily groundbreaking but entertaining enough to pick up the next issue. It was certainly well written, I particularly liked the scene where Diana's sword was returned to Nubia, but we've already seen Amazons Attack and it wasn't that great a story to begin with so I don't see the redux being much better. On top of that, though I detest the xenophobia and homophobia of the current leaders of the Republican party the criticism of their views here was rather on the nose to work as an intelligent metaphor. I don't know if I'll be reading more.

World's Finest #19Written by Mark Waid Art by Travis Moore Summary: Batman aides Superman in his battle against Jax-ur from deep inside the Phantom Zone but there is more than meets the eye. Plot: This re-imagining of the first meeting of the Worlds Finest wraps up in this issue as we learn that Jax-Ur was behind the mysterious disappearances that brought Superman and Batman together. And while the quick pacing and conclusion of the story definitely gave it a fun silver age team up feel but I was slightly disappointed that it in the end the story felt more concerned with setting up a future villain for a story in a book yet to even come out yet. And while I definitely like that we're seeing a fun and under utilized bronze age villain return, it just felt like it took too much of the spotlight away from Batman and Superman's first meeting. I know, I said last time that I didn't think we needed yet another retelling of their first meeting but if you're going to do it I want it to feel suitably special and this just didn't. Art: Moore certainly is Dan Mora but he has a suitably cartoony look that made the action feel like a fun Saturday morning cartoon which is really what this book is all about. Grade:7.5/10

Wonder Woman #1. I haven't been impressed with King's writing so far but Sampere's art I am a big fan of. As usual the art was excellent. And I actually liked the writing this first issue. It was a "dense" read. It was refreshing in this day of decompression in stories. It was definitely enough to keep me around for the first arc.

Captain America #1. JMS is a hit or miss writer for me. He has really good ideas and is entertaining but with time he seems to lose interest and veers off course. Saiz of course produces beautiful art that can sell this book. As usual JMS has a strong start with a really interesting concept. I love the modern story with flashbacks to Steve's life pre-CA. Definitely worth picking up.

I also picked up World's Finest (this felt like a fill in). Nightwing (not a fan of the Ric persona. This also feels like a fill in). Superman (wow. This title continues to be one of the best Superman titles in recent times). And Titans (like the twist with Blood and Garth. Also beautiful art). All were good but some not as good as usual. Over All a really good week.

Guardians of the Galaxy #6Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing Art by Alex Lins Summary: The origin of how Groot became Grootfall is finally revealed and the Guardians of the Galaxy...die!? Plot: After the serious highpoint that was the last issue there was bound to be a fall...and this was it. This wasn't a bad issue, it finally gave us the story of how Groot became the planet eating Grootfall and it was believable: Groot's whole world was turned into a cinder by forces unknown and with her dying breath Granopy the all mother of Planet X gave Groot her godlike powers and coupled with his grief he apparently went mad. However, as it was told in a non-linear series of detached flash backs from each of the Guardians it lacked a real sense of punch that it would have had if it was just given to us straight. That said, a lot of how I'll actually feel about this issue will depend on how things move forward; it could be an appropriately calm moment between big events or it could read as pointless filler, it all depends on what happens now that the Guardians are apparently dead and Grootfall has eaten the whole star system and possibly merged with the memories of his friends? Kelly and Lanzing have done it before so they definitely have me hoping they can stick the landing. Art: Further giving this issue a detached feeling is the fact that it has a fill in art team. They're not bad but the style is definitely very noticeably different which makes you feel almost like it's a different title rather than a continuation from the previous issue. All and all it's a weird chapter and I hope it improves again. Grade:7/10

Over All a really good week. Superman continues to really surprise me with how good it is, so far this seriously has to be one of the best runs on Superman we've seen in a good twenty years. Titans was pretty solid too, the ongoing story with Brother Blood is proving to be a good use of a time tested character.

You know why I always say I prefer the DC Universe to the Marvel Universe? Because with DC you very rarely are made to feel like have to read every title to get a story and all too often you need multiple books to get a story with Marvel.
Case in point: Up until now I had been enjoying Ben Percy's Wolverine, I started it after his awesome noir fueled audio drama and while the run was more classic superhero fair than his first outing it has largely been fun. All you really needed to know was who Wolverine was and that the X-Men had created their own island nation(again) and they had a mutant flower that could heal humans and the rest was a pretty cool crime story that followed Wolverine as he tried to track down who was stealing the petals. It started to go down hill when it tied more into the larger X-Men story with Beast going villain...but I kept with it because knowing that fact aside it was still pretty self contained...but then it crossed over with Ghost Rider and I didn't feel like getting into that so I skipped that issue and I was excited for the latest as it featured the Hulk but now there's this whole Fall of X event story going on which I have no clue about and have absolutely no care to read which made most of this issue fairly incomprehensible so I'm not going to be picking up more.
And this kind of thing happens all the time, so I guess it must be profitable with people gobbling up all the various titles to follow along but that's not for me.
