Batman and Robin #3Written by Joshua Williamson Art by Simone De Mio Summary: Batman and Robin struggle to break White Rabbit free from the clutches of Shush and the Terrible Trio. Plot: Batman and Robin continues to be a satisfying superhero romp with lots of action and just enough endearing character moments to keep it interesting. I'm still not a fan of the name Shush(She-Hush) for the villain and Williamson's insistence on having Batman continue to harangue her about Tommy Elliot(the original Hush) feels off for a character who is not only the supposed world's greatest detective but also a character who has already seen villain mantles passed on to others with out a direct connection between them. That said, the manic, Saturday morning cartoon energy is fun and I love the use of the Terrible Trio and the inclusion of Manbat at the end makes perfect sense for a story playing on Doctor Moreau. This isn't a story likely to go down as one of my favorite Batman runs of all time but it's a solid meat and potatoes superhero comic and sometimes that's good enough. Art: While De Mio's art is serviceable and tells the story clearly, his slick, angular style just does nothing for me and is easily the low point of the book in my eyes. It just comes across as too clean and mass produced to me, and it conveys zero mood or atmosphere which is an aspect that is not only important to any story is especially needed in a Batman book. Batman is just a "regular" guy in a costume and a lot of what makes him work is that he tries to sell it that he is actually more than just a regular guy and is actually a menacing creature of the night and visually you just can't do that if you don't play up the shadowy mood at least a little bit. To top it off he colors his own work and uses a really over-saturated filter which just gives the whole book an odd, unreal feeling that takes me out of it. Grade:6/10

DC
Batman and Robin #3. This felt like a filler issue. Really not much happened to advance the story. Although it is action packed. I like the art but find the colors too garish.
Green Lantern #5. Another great issue with Hal vs Sinestro. Loving Hal being earth bound.
Shazam #5. What a great series! I can not say enough good things about the story and art. Just superb. Loved seeing Mary in action.
World's Finest: Teen Titans #5. This issue was just average in a series that has been stellar.

Marvel
Daredevil #3. Really loving this new focus on Matt as a priest. His anger at innocents being harmed fit so well.
Immortal Thor #4. This was the issue where this story really came together and made me invested in this new series. Can't wait to get the next issue.
Image
Geiger: Ground Zero #1. The first mini series came out 2 years ago. This is Geiger's origin story. The ongoing launches this spring with other series set in this universe. It's worth checking out. It's a mix of different genres that makes it unique.

I don't know about average, although I liked the villain of the month stories Waid was doing with the Titans in the past I really liked that he brought the Terror Titans to the foreground here and the scene at the end with Dick literally coming out of Batman's shadow(I loved that visual) was really well done.

Decent weekend of downloads - Batman & Robin #3 - Danger Street #11 - Planetary.... er, I mean Outsiders #1 - WildCATS #12 - The Man From Maybe #1 - Daredevil #3 Yeah, I'm not really sure why they didn't just call it Planetary. At first I thought it might be a rights thing and they were just using the concept, then I heard they were creating a new Drummer...and now after reading the issue it ends with Drummer uncovering the Planetary guide so it definitely seems like it's not that they can't use the name and logo. As for the plot itself? Definitely not as explosive as the original Planetary, this had way too much exposition for my liking, but I do like Lanzing and Kelly so I'm willing to give it a shot.

The Sandman #2Written by Robert Venditti Art by Riley Rossmo Summary: After a fire destroys his home Wesley Dodds discovers that his secret book of gas formulas has been stolen and he fears the worst. Plot: I'm still not entirely sold on the main thrust of this series, the idea that Wesley accidentally created a host of other terrible, deadly gases in his journey to create his sleeping gas just feels a little too much to me and out of character for the mild mannered Dodds. On top of that the idea of an evil mirror version of the Sandman which was developed in this issue feels a little too much like a rote superhero plot to work as a Sandman story. It's not a terrible development and if Venditti is going for a more meat potatoes superhero comic feel to Sandman that's certainly a valid choice...but I'm a reader who firmly believes that Sandman Mystery Theater was one of the best comics ever made and I was really hoping this new book would capture that more pulpy feel. My missed expectations aside the story is decent in its own right, with some solid character work on Wesley and his guilt and I am interested in the mystery surrounding Wesley's dark doppelganger(even if I strongly believe it's Mr. Vanderlyle) so I'm definitely not dropping this anytime soon but I don't think it will ever reach the heights of Wagner's previous run. Art: Rossmo's style is slowly growing on me, it's far from my favorite but his odd angles did lend the fight Sandman had with the thugs in the department store a slight sense of horror which is really fitting with the character. Grade: 7/10 Did you pick this up yet Slam_Bradley ?

Star Wars Visions: Peach MomokoArt and story by Peach Momoko Summary: A Sith Wizard's evil plans are thwarted by a young Jedi and her friends. Plot/Art: I haven't been keeping up with most of the Star Wars comics as I hated the Droids event but I picked up the Peach Momoko Visions issue and it was pretty decent. And while I like a good wordless comic, especially when the art is as gorgeous as Peach's, and although the main thrust of the plot was easy enough to follow visually it didn't really hit home emotionally. Silent comics work well when you already know the characters so you already know their backgrounds and motivations and can easily read their emotions visually, or with non-human characters where you don't want to anthropomorphize them(Like Age or Reptiles) but with a more complex plot and completely new characters there was a distinct lack of tension. While I fully got that there was some Sith magic that was infecting people and that a Jedi and her friends defeated the Sith...I ultimately didn't care all that much because I had no idea who the young, presumably jedi, woman was or why I should care about her or her friends(was one of them a robot?) so there wasn't a real sense of danger because I had no connection to the heroes or understanding of what was really going on. There just isn't enough characterization that can be done purely visually, you get the broad strokes but there isn't any nuance so I really feel like this should have included dialogue and it would have read much better.
It looked gorgeous though, and I like the idea of just letting creators do what they want in the Galaxy Far, Far Away so I'm still a fan of the concept of Visions even if this one wasn't the best use of the concept.

Yeah, after reading it last night (might need to re-read to get the finer points), it was way too expository. I give them credit for trying to tie it into Planetary and the Bleed, but its reaching at straws for me to actually give a damn.

One question though...why is Storm on Mars?

I haven't read a ton of that part of the story, but part of the whole Krakoa story is that anywhere a piece of Krakoa is, you can go from one to the other, so the mutants somehow used that to colonize Mars (which is now called Arrako) There were already people there, or they sprouted from Krakoa (I missed that part) and at one point Storm went there and took over. Last I saw she was Queen of Arrako or something. If you're interesting, I believe the X-Men: red book covers that story.

That sounds a more than a little odd to me, and unless Storm somehow crosses over and revives John Carter I doubt I'd go looking for more.
