Stumbled upon this B feature by accident last night when my son wanted to watch DC Showcase Presents Batman: A Death in the Family (an odd repackaging of Batman: Under the Red Hood that I don't recommend anywhere near as much as the original film). This was a B feature included, and it utterly rocked my world so much so that I was convinced it was an adaptation of a Sandman issue I'd somehow missed or forgotten, but that does not seem to be the case.
It was written by JM DeMatteis, and I am slowly beginning to realize this man lands among my favorite writers of all time. Both Amber and I were sobbing by the close. It was fantastic.
My only criticism is that I think they got Death's voice wrong. At one point, she is described as having both the perkiness of youth and the wisdom of bring very old, but her voice is just perky.
Anyway, it's on HBO Max, and I strongly recommend it.

I wish they'd do more of the DC Showcase shorts.
The Jonah Hex one and the Spectre ones from several years ago were phenomenal. I particularly want an ongoing Spectre comic based on that short.
