I figured this would be a fun thread to do. What were your Top Comics of 2023? Top OGNs of 2023?
I did a Top 10 of comics (I'll post the OGNs later) of my favorite series/reads of the year.
10. Shazam! (Mark Waid/Dan Mora)- Finally a Captain Marvel that's worth reading since Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam!. Waid and Mora go old 90s DC goodness and create a fun fresh take on The Red Cheese.
9. No/On (Brian Buccellato/Kyle Higgins/Geraldo Borges)- Serial killer Richard Roe's murders shocked all of Pittsburgh. Since then ,the political take of serial killers, copycat killers and a new No/One killer emerges. It's a dark and tense action thriller that slowly unravels. Buccellato & Higgins go deep with the writing, deep that the No/One podcast is part of the book. It's a fun immersive experience.
8. Batman/Superman: World's Finest (Mark Waid/Dan Mora)- If its wasn't for Mark Waid, I wouldn't give two s#!ts about any DC books. The powerhouses of the DCU go on impossible adventures. Fun instead of dark (like DC usually does), its what makes fun superhero comics.
7. She-Hulk (Rainbow Rowell/Roge Antonio)- Rowell, taking a bit of John Bryne, some Dan Slott and making it all her own, Jen Walters living in New York gets weirder with each episode. Romance, Fight Clubs, and the occasional law case, She-Hulk powers her way through her series. Cancelled at issue 15 for a new relaunch, its a light & airy book.
6. Local Man (Tim Seeley/Tony Fleecs)- What if a C-Grade superhero on the rise is mired in controversy, comes back home where it all started and a s#!tstorm of bad things happen to him? Welcome to the world of Local Man. Seeley & Fleecs weave a great tale of crime and superheroic antics into a dark comedy and brilliant read.
5. Painkiller Jane: Beautiful Killers (Jimmy Palmiotti/Juan Santacruz)- Palmiotti's creation continues in a bloody and action pack 2-parter Kickstarter that came out. Jimmy loves violence but does it with affection rather than sensationalism. Hot ladies with guns and action. Sold!
4. Billy Dogma & Jane Legit (Dean Haspiel)- This was such a surprise when Dino announced that his 90s indie classic was coming back via Kickstarter. Had to back this immediately!. What makes Billy Dogma worth reading is the story; a love story that'll destroy worlds and universe. We're all trying to find out Jane Legit. Dean's writing and his art are a 1-2 punch that should on everyone's shelf or long box
3. Wild's End (Dan Abnett/INJ Culbard)- Abnett & Culbard's continuation of their Wild's End series continues. If you haven't read, imagine Wind & The Willows meets War of the Worlds. This mini, another story of the incoming alien invasion; this time along the coastline of fictional London. Like the other series before, the struggle for 'humanity' in these animals is a brilliant one. I love this series dearly.
2. Hey Kids! Comics! Vol 3 (Howard Victor Chaykin)- Uncle Howard's unofficial look at the history of comics books is one that should be on every comic lover's shelves. It's brilliant as the names have changed but the history is there that all comic fans know. What is so brilliant about this volume is that it switches into the greatest autobiography put in comic format. Can't recommend this enough
1. Love & Rockets- (Gilbert Hernandez/Jaime Hernandez)- It's the greatest comic book of all time. Full stop. Friends that know me, comic buddies of mine know that I'll sing the praises of this comic until I leave this Earth. Only 2 issues came out but their worth the wait and read (and re-read). Gilbert's continuation of his Fritz movie legacies and lineage make for surrealistic reads. But its Jaime's story in issue #14 that brought a tear to my eyes, as its been something I've been waiting for close to 30 years.
