I liked it more than Incognito, Kill or be Killed and the first trade of the Fade Out (but I really liked the rest of the Fade Out, weirdly enough the first part didn't exactly draw me in).
I do think it was nowhere near as good as Pulp (I wanted to say last years Pulp, but it has already been years).
I had kind of forgotten Kill or be Killed. I can't argue with that. I absolutely LOVED The Fade Out, from the first page to the last. It is probably my favorite book by them.
I think if I'm going to reread Fade Out I'll like the first part more, the second and third trades are among my favourite Brubaker/Phillips.

I'm going to wait till the end of the year, as there's a chance I might get to read one more thing from 2023 before the month's out. As of right now I only have three, I think.

In no particular order: - Defenders Beyond (got it in trade this year, mini-series came out last year) - Nice House on the Lake volume 2 - Night Fever - Name of the Rose part 1 - Robillar (#3, but it was 3-part series, so I usually only include limited series once the final issue came out) - Don't Let Go Possibly I Am Their Silence (bought it, but didn't have a chance to read it yet, will edit this tonight.) And ongoing: X-Men Red Saga
Update: Finally gotten around to reading "I Am Their Silence", which was great. Also the new Blacksad should be on my list.

The Beat has given their Best of 2023 list. I've only read 2 on their list (Gotham City Year One and the first couple of issues of Eve Ewing's Black Panther run) though that Miles Davis OGN is on there and I still haven't gotten to it yet. -M

Ok two to add to my tops of '23 list in the OGN category- Brubaker & Phillips' Were the Body Was and Dave Chisholm's Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound Two very different OGN and two very different reading experiences, but both are excellent and highly recommended. -M

I have the new Clowes book, Monica, but won't be able to read it before the year ends, unfortunately. The high school setting of Roaming isn't a plus for me personally but I have had Jillian Tamaki on my to-read list for awhile so I do want to try something. Chast's book I like the sound of but I'm not sure about the cartooning style. I could see myself taking a chance on it anyway if I felt in the mood. The other two don't really grab me at first glance but I won't rule them out altogether.

Alright, here's my sort of final list (at least the one I am putting out there on my social media accounts), with a sort of ranking, though that can change depending on mood when I am asked so take it with a grain of salt for the most part).
Here's my Top 20 comics that I read that were released in 2023
1. Conan the Barbarian (Titan) 2. Usagi Yojimbo (IDW/Dark Horse) 3. Where the Body Was OGN (Image) 4. Batman & Scooby Doo Mysteries (DC) 5. Batman/Superman World's Finest (DC) 6. Black Cloak (Image) 7. Parker Girls (Abstract) 8. Miles Davis & The Search for the Sound OGN 9. The Hunger & the Dusk (Image) 10. The Shadows of Thule (Humanoids) 11. Bone More Tall Tales (Cartoon Books) 12. Birds of Prey (DC) 13. Night Fever OGN (Image) 14. Groo: In the Wild (DarkHorse) 15. Count Dante: The Unauthorized [But Sort of True]Story of the Deadliest Man Who Ever Lived (Scout Comics) 16. Red Sonja (Grobekk/Geovani) (Dynamite) 17. Dr. Strange (Marvel) 18. Titans (DC) 19. Newburn (Image) 20. World's Finest Teen Titan (DC)
Not the objective best, just the 20 I enjoyed the most for the year.

A comic I thought was very interesting this year, by a cartoonist I'd never heard of, was Why Don't You Love Me? by Paul Rainey. Told as a long series of daily (or maybe more accurately Sunday) strips, it has a high level of storytelling craft.

I haven't tried Why Don't You Love Me yet but I loved Thunder Brother by Rainey so I'll definitely have to check it out.

Yeah I was totally unfamiliar with them before reading this book, glad to know there's another substantial book out there.
