In the early 1970s, DC and then Marvel hired some very talented comic artists from the Philippines to work on their books. Starting with Tony DeZungia, who then recruited fellow artist from his Island nation. These were incredibly talented artist, each with their own style, and superb with a pen and ink. They were also very fast. Today, they are very much admired and loved. So post a cover from your favorite Filipino artist. One rule I am imposing is it must be a solo work of Pencils and Inks. Not just one or the other. And please, name the artist. I'll start off with this cover from my favorite Filipino artist, Nestor Redondo. Swamp Thing #12
Here are the rules:
• Post one, and only one, classic cover that fits the theme of the contest.
• The cover must be from a published comic book or collected volume published before December 2013.
• Please include the title and the issue number of the comic, preferably in bold, in case some posters cannot see your image. (Admittedly, I never do this)
• Covers must be posted before voting begins.
• Voting takes place on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, beginning at 12:01 am PST and ending at 11:59 AM PST.
• Vote by posting the name of the poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most in bold.
• The winner of the contest is the entrant with the most votes after the voting period ends.
• The winner gets to choose the theme for the next week's contest.
• If you don't think the cover fits the theme, don't post disparaging remarks about it. Just don't vote for it and keep quiet.
• If a cover is more recent than the classic time frame, kindly point it out to the poster, who may then choose an alternate before voting begins
Have fun!

Among the many wildly talented Filipino artists, my favorite has always been Alex Nino, so: Heavy Metal Magazine, vol. 1, no. 11 (HM Communications, 1978)

My favorite in this very crowded field of talent is Alfredo Alcala. In 1963 he created the sword and sorcery hero Voltar; here's Voltar's first appearance.

Alcala is easily my favorite of the Filipino artists. And I almost went with this cover. The only art portfolio I bought back in the day, when they were a thing, was Alcala's Voltar portfolio. But I had to go with the Ernie Chan beheaded Superman cover because it was one of the first dozen comics I ever bought. And Prince Hal hates it.

So, Mr. Anti-Nostalgia, I do give you a partial pass because you were a mere barefoot boy with cheek of tan when you first were swindled persuaded into plunking down the quarter some adult had earned to purchase this abomination. And of course your unrivaled distaste for Superman is also a mitigating circumstance. But you're a big boy now. And it would be reassuring if you'd admit that what you liked when you were -- twelve? twenty? -- whatever age you were when you unwisely unknowingly bought this monstrosity, anfd though I appreciate your shout-out to my being a man of wealth moderate resources and taste, I hope that this is the last we see of this unsightly mess in a serious post. Oh, I do hate it.

Oh, I do hate it. I was 8. And I'll have you know that any money I spent on funnybooks was earned doing chores, usually for the little old lady my Mom worked for part time (she ran a big switchboard that kept her tied to her home, so Mom covered it on Saturdays so she could go do her shopping). And Ernie Chan did a whole lot of covers that made Little Slam buy funnybooks.

I guess I'm gonna be that guy and render the whole back-and-forth between Slam Bradley and Prince Hal, as much fun as they might be having, utterly moot. The rules at the top of the post include this - One rule I am imposing is it must be -->a solo work of Pencils and Inks. Not just one or the other<--. And what do we see right under that World's Finest cover? World's Finest #235 Ernie Chan -->and John Calnan<--. Unless, of course, the attribution to Calnan is incorrect and Chan did the art solo. But the internet says it's correct, and who among us can doubt the accuracy of the internet?

Arak, Son of Thunder #45 (DC, 1985, Tony Duzinga) And I spared myself some embarrassment by remembering in time that Luis Dominguez was Argentinean, not Filipino.
