Hey Icct. Nice summary. But who doesn't love a Kirby slugfest? About the 2&3 parters. I never heard fans didn't like them. I can only think casual readers didn't like picking up a book in mid story. One a side note, I really hate modern re-coloring, that Tales of Asgard title page makes a mockery of what the colorist (Stan Goldberg?) was trying to do.

The magic of the Kirby slugfest is that he has them fight all over the city. In FF #25,26 , the Thing and the Hulk cover different areas, even falling into a subway. The recoloring helps in some places. In Some of the original copies I have , the color is washed out or faded.

Nice work, as usual, Icctrombone. Love reading these reviews. And just makes me wish even more that Tales of Asgard could have been a monthly.

Can't remember where I read it but I believe Thor has to consciously summon Mjolnir (mentally, not verbally) for its enchantment to work. Otherwise it remains wherever it came to rest.

Yeah, I’m not sure Lee was consistent with the hammers return. I think there were times in previous issues where the hammer was knocked out of his hand and it stayed there. But there’s also the time in Avengers 3 where he has the hammer circling him and Namor.

GET JANE FOSTER! continues with a new kind of abductor! Nurse Foster has faced super-villains like the Cobra and Mr. Hyde. And all-powerful gods of mischief like Loki.
But we’re starting the season with a impressive newcomer. He’s mysterious. And he wears a lot of blue. He wears a blue robe over a blue striped suit. And he keeps Jane in a New York apartment somewhere and won’t let her look out the window!
But it’s for her own good!
Stay tuned to find out more about this mysterious rookie!

Let's face it. Continuity developed slowly. At first they were just trying to make comics that sell. I doubt Lee or Kirby paid attention to the nuance of things like Mjolnar's magic. Eventually, things became canonical. But when you are just throwing out a story idea to someone doing 3 or 4 books a month who is doing the plotting, you are not going to get the minutia right. Stan was not the type of Editor who dealt with detail.

Stan was not the type of Editor who dealt with detail. All true. And Kirby was not the kind of storyteller who liked repeating himself (thematically, yes, but not specifics). Hence, Thor doesn't use the "turn him into helium" trick every time he battles Absorbing Man. Which is good, because how boring to recycle the same actions again and again. I'll take innovation over consistency every time.
Cei-U! I summon the fresh take!

Journey into Mystery # 121
It’s a great battle issue. Page after page of Creel and Thor beating on each other and trying to figure out what to do next and turning to glass and having your own damn hammer thrown at you and so on. I really love that panel where Creel is walking around in Manhattan as big as a building. There’s a guy at one of the nearby windows looking out, 20 feet away from Creel. It’s just another workday in New York. Only three other things happen in this story. Jane is being held prisoner by the Blue Manhattan Phantom. Loki is puttering around in Ularic’s alchemy den. (He even checks on Ularic to make sure he’s still in a coma. I’m wondering if we’re actually going to see Ularic rescued, or if he’s just going to be a forgotten subplot. There’s probably a panel in the 1990s were Odin says, “Oh, I forgot about Ularic!”) And the other thing is just one panel where we see the Norn stone, sitting there in the grass where Thor dropped it several issues ago. Maybe a squirrel will find it and activate it. That would be awesome. Or maybe a Corgi! Meanwhile, in Tales of Asgard, they’re all about to be killed in a storm and a huge bunch of the crew is thinking maybe that Loki should actually be the captain as Thor seems hell-bent on sending them to their deaths. Have faith, Asgardians! Here comes Balder to the rescue!

I just noticed a mistake on the cover, Creel's head is clearly metal. Yet it is colored as if flesh. As I said, detail was not the editors strong suit.

I don't think it's a mistake but a deliberate choice: they wanted Creel to stand out against the buildings in the background. And since coloring was usually the last step in the process (and didn't involve the original art anyway), there was likely no time for retouching so...
Cei-U! Rivets be damned!

Of course we must ask if there were rivets all over his body that Colletta ignored.

On the page where Thor doesn't strike the Glass Absorbing man. It is clear to me that Kirby simply had Creel evade the blow and then again in the bank. You can see the motion lines as he zig zags. Stan decided to make it into Thor magically not being able to deliver the blow. The readers here can decide for themselves if the change makes it better or not.
