Jane has not benefited by knowing a god. Not one bit. She has been captured multiple times almost killed multiple times and is now just getting out is a mental hospital. When she encountered Hercules, she should have run the other way.

Not to mention all the times she’s had her memory erased by the likes of Thor and Balder.

Maybe we should make a list of powers or weapons that are never used again. It’s already 42 issues in, they shouldn’t keep coming up with one off solutions for problems.

Back to that issue. So now Hercules has the hots for Jane. She is some woman, gets not one, but two gods to be into her. Next issues they come to blows over her. foxley might not like Kirby's women, but the Gods do! (a joke) Hey! That’s right! The next issue is Thor #126! The big Thor-Hercules slugfest where they fight the whole issue! The single best issue of Thor ever! One of the highlights of the Silver Age and one of the BEST COMICS EVER!! I think Mr. Trombone has tricked me again! He asked me to do two issues in a row because he was busy. But he really wanted to snag the Thor #126 review for himself! Why do I fall for his plots and deceptions! Next time he asks me to do a joint review thread, I’ll know better. You better be careful, Mr. Trombone! Or someday, the flying trolls will get you! Or maybe you’ll be apprenticed to Ularic. (When that happens, you can check and see if Ularic is still in a coma in that pit.)

For the record, Ularic's next appearance was in the 8-page Volstagg solo story I wrote and drew for my first application to Marvel in 1979. It didn't get me a job but I did get a letter from Jim Shooter encouraging me to study Steve Ditko's storytelling methods and then reapply.

I guess since this was the time Shooter was cancelling Kirby's books, he decided not to tell you to look at Kirby. The way Stan told every new artist. But Ditko's storytelling is a little more idiosyncratic to emulate.

But Ditko's storytelling is a little more idiosyncratic to emulate. Actually, when I met Shooter in person two years later, he did go over one of Kirby's stories with me panel by panel. It was probably the most astute explanation of the mechanics of comics storytelling I will ever hear. What he wanted me to learn from Ditko was the clarity of his staging because he felt my layouts were "too coy" and required the reader to make too many inferences as to what was happening between the panels... and he was absolutely right.
Cei-U! Say what you will about the man but he knew his stuff!

That is true. His action scenes could be read without any words. Why it is so funny when Stan writes dialog like "Now I will swing through the window and come up behind this crook!"

The Mighty Thor # 126 Writer Stan Lee Artist: Jack Kirby Artist Inks: Vince CollettaThis is the big one. The very first issue of Thor sans the Journey into Mystery title. I have used my Loki like powers to transix Hoosierx and beguiled his mind into allowing me to review this issue. I know, It's not nice , but part of the title of the thread has “ Battle” in it. The victor of this particular battle is me. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHH! Plot summary: Anyway , the issue opens up with Thor and Hercules crashing through the front of a malt shop where he saw Hercules making time with his girl and ending in a sucker punch flooring the Thunder god. Cheating is a dirty business. The two trade blows and insults when we shift the scene to Asgard where we see the army tending to their wounds after getting their butts whipped by Thor on his way back to earth. Odin is mad and is determined that his son be punished for defying him. Back on earth we see Herc and Thor raining thunderous blows on each other , all the time getting the measure of each other. It is stated that they are seeing if they have to hold back , and when they both see that they can take immortal punches, its on like Donkey Kong. It seems like with every punch they change venues first in the streets and then on top of a train and finally ending in an area where buildings are being demolished. ( Thank god for all those demolition sites in early Marvel ). They trade blows with Thor talking smack the entire way. We return to Asgard where we see that Odin decides to take half of Thors power while he's in combat, even at risk that he might not survive against the Olympian. He doesn't have the heart to do it himself , so he gives his power to an advisor named Seidring the Merciless to mete out Thors punishment. Seidring points to earth and a ray strikes the Thunder god, causing his knees to buckle. It's obvious to Hercules that a ray of light has struck his opponent and he's not the same fighter but he doesn't relent and Hercules drops an entire building on Thor. His hammer saves him as he uses it as a brace and escapes being crushed. Hercules gives him a chance to surrender but the Thunder god refuses and is knocked out with a smashing blow. Crowds of onlookers flock to Hercules cause everyone loves a winner, leaving Thor to get insulted by a few guys as he's shaking off the cobwebs. The final page has Jane Foster approaching Thor asking for forgiveness for having him take a beating because of her playing games with his emotions, but he's not having any of it. Odin appears in Janes mind urging her to go to him and admitting that Thor didn't lose , that he acted shamelessly in punishing him that way thus allowing Hercules to win. The story ends with Jane running after a humiliated Thor. This might be my favorite Thor issue of the entire run, including all volumes and Annuals. It's like a fine wine, a juicy steak or a succulent lobster tail. Comments:Thor fights Hercules and totally talks smack while doing it. Amazing splash page . Kirby is King! After the 2nd panel of the 7th page , Thor is without his hammer until page 12. The pace of the story has a lot happening , but it feels like 60 seconds has certainly gone by. There's no explanation to where the hammer went during that time, as he didn't throw it or drop it. You could feel the power in that final blow that knocks out Thor It almost brings a tear to my eye when you see that Odin is so remorseful for stealing Thors victory. It's just a great final page. It feels like a Shakespeare tragedy seeing someone getting robbed like that. It feels like this issue has Lee finally adopting the Shakespeare way of talking completely. A lot of Thees and Thous in this story. Tales of Asgard
Thor lands in the land where the Queen of the flying trolls resides. He pleads with her to release Loki, but she has other things in mind. She mentions that she needs a king to help her rule and she shoots her shot with Thor. He rebuffs her and suddenly an explosion occurs giving the Asgardians the chance to escape. It turns out that big daddy Odin caused the diversion. Odin then appears before the argonauts and commands them to come back to Asgard where the real danger has been discovered. Comments:It's interesting to see in hindsight that men and women of the silver age just wanted to have sex. The queen wants a " King" , yeah right. Odin calls the argonauts back , so maybe he sent them on a wild goose chase just to see them in action. Ads and stuff.

Quick story- Years ago when I was still hunting down the Silver age Thors, my wife got me Thor 126 as a present at Christmas. it's beautiful copy but when I examined it, I found that the cover was almost completely detached except for the bottom. Well, after opening it up a few times it became completely detached. I never told her, but I bought another copy some time later. It's a shame because the copy she got me had a 7.0-8.0 cover.

As Icctrombone mentioned, the panel with Hercules's winning punch is nicely done. It's interesting to imagine how such a scene might have been depicted a few years later - might they not have had Hercules punching Thor so hard he would have went flying through a series of walls or buildings, for example? I think this scene with the blow dropping Thor to the ground, like a real-life boxing KO, is much more effective.
I remember Eddie Campbell talking about the cover to this issue and how it conveyed such a vivid impression of physical strength and power - specifically the way Kirby drew Thor and Hercules with such big, blocky forearms and hands. When they grip something you get a striking sense of the force behind it. Campbell said he tried to create the same effect with some of his characters in the mythology-related comic he was doing at the time that I forget the name of.

What every body said. A thought I had is the evolution of Kirby's figures from the first Thor in JiM. 83. Lean and strong to pure power.
