Even on a curve of Marvel books in the early 60s, these are silly. You can tell with the other writers used (and I think the Stan Lee:Writer credit is more him getting paid than him doing story plotting, most likely he used ghosts) that they weren't thinking further than the next issue. It gets better soon, when Stan and Kirby settle down and start trying to make it a more cohesive book.

The only Marvel book that was worse was the Human Torch in Strange Tales. Ant-Man was also generally pretty bad, but it was less silly.

I won't dispute that they are silly and nonsensical at some places. I guess I'm saying, I can have an enjoyable time watching Shindlers list and Cannonball run , while I wouldn't classify them both as enjoyable for the same reasons.

This is a really good statement, and I’ve said similar things myself. I can enjoy Police Academy for its own specific reasons, and the night after, I might watch, say, A Few Good Men. I can enjoy that, too. But I’m definitely enjoying the films as far as relaxing at home is concerned, but for different reasons. I guess one could use the analogy of food. I might enjoy a McDonalds meal one day, and then enjoy a potato and salad the day after, but I could hardly compare the two in the same way.

You get me, now if we could just do something about your wrestling fixation...

I'm enjoying reading this thread, guys, even though I am not a Thor fan. In particular, I especially find these early stories to be dire to the point of being basically unreadable. But nevertheless, it's fun seeing these comics through your eyes and reading your comments. Good work! Same here.
I started reading Thor via the Epic Collections a little while ago, and decided to begin at the very beginning because, as I thought at the time, "It's still Thor, and Odin, and the other gods and mythological beings and stuff. How bad could it be?" Woof.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy reading them, their particular sillyness is part of the fun.

Though I admit that those Strange Tales Human Torch books are a tough slog for me. The book improved 100% when Fury came on.

I have an inexplicable fondness for all three of these early turkeys--Human Torch, Thor, Ant-Man--as well as early Iron Man. Yes, objectively speaking, they're abominable but when I was 5 they were magic. So when I re-read them for pleasure, as opposed to when I'm wearing my historian's hat, I see them through that 5-year-old's eyes and I'm filled with joy.
Cei-U! But Robert Bernstein is still the devil's spawn!

I still say the panel where Thor throws a string of tanks connected by a chain, is great.
