I just started my Howie journey with #1
This made me do a bit of googling as I can fit everything I know about him in a space that's smaller than my avatar. And I came upon this, from here
Did anyone experience this?

According to the statement of ownership, Amazing Spider-Man had a paid circulation of 282k not 500k in 1976. HTD #1 had a cover price of 25c not 20c.

Yes, for about a year prices on HtD #1 were through the roof. By the summer of '77, I was able to pick up a NM copy for #1.
Cei-U! I summon the flash in the pan!

It took me longer to get #'s 1 and 2, but I didn't pay super much for either.

I think #3 had "low distribution" and was also pricey. I always get a laugh out of those. "low distribution" in the 1970s would have been, what, 150,000 copies? The best selling books today dream about hitting those numbers.

I was in college at the time, and there were a few other fans on campus who would borrow & read my comics. I always got all of them back - except for HTD #1.
About 20 years ago when I found online fandom, I encountered the guy who most regularly borrowed my comics back in college. He was operating an ftp server of scanned comics, if anybody still knows what that was. He asked if he had any books "overdue" from my library and I told him that my HTD #1 was missing. He mailed me a copy.

The best selling books today dream about hitting those numbers. The only difference being that some of those 150K would have been returned and destroyed (and there's no knowing how many), which doesn't happen in direct market distribution. There's aslo no knowing how many of those not distributed but printed int he 70s were destroyed vs. were sold out the back door to a dealer or some such. -M

Incidentally, there's a new 2024 series (Vol 7 I believe)....let's see if #1 moves 150,000 copies. Unlikely, and even if it did, it's because of all those variants that force dealers to buy multiple regular copies lol...

Ha, I still indulge in one here and there...but the novelty is gone when everyone and their dog is doing one...
Some dealers order 100 copies just to get 1 ratio variant, and are stuck with 60 of those regular copies that won't sell...and they try to sell the 1:100 cover for a big premium but that doesn't always work either....and a year later you see those ratio variants selling for way less on ebay.

I still say that 90%of comics lose their value over time.

I still say that 90%of comics lose their value over time. I think the tipping point for that was when the standard price for floppies hit $1, so the mid-80s or so. At that point, books either went up or they are eventually consigned to dollar bins.
Do you mean 90% of issues or 90% of individual books?
