We all know the comics will match the actor/actress if the movie does well, not the other way around, so the 'look' isn't really important (even though it's hard when it's not right to cringe). What's more important, IMO, is that they either are fans or at least are willing to try to understand the character, rather than just guessing or not caring and collecting the pay check.

Yes, and I thought he was a disappointment. I get that it was done as a nod to fans who'd been asking for him in that role, but he brought absolutely nothing to the part. Totally wasted space. I never took that as a promise that he'd be playing the role in future films any more than I expect Patrick Stewart to play Professor X going forward. I have no opinion on Pascal. Heck, the last time I had an opinion on a casting decision before seeing the film was Heath Ledger as The Joker, to which I said, "Booo!". I sure learned my lesson. Yep. Sometime people think casting is like cosplaying, where you have to perfectly recreate a drawn character in real life. I remember in some very old issue of Wizard from the 80s where they imagined that the perfect casting for Wolverine would be Schwarzenegger (due to the hypertrophic muscles with which he was/is drawn)! If you have a Wizard magazine from the 80s, I'd like to see it, because it is a time traveler. The magazine began in 1991.  It goes back further than that, though, with fan casting based on appearance or because they appear in something that suggests a similar character or story. Back in the 70s, in the letters columns of the JLA, there used to be suggestions for a JLA tv series or movie (only took 40 years to finally get a movie....should have waited longer...) and these are what I recall, as regular suggestions: Superman-Peter Lupus; and, later, Christopher Reeve, after 1978). Lupus had portrayed Superman in tv ads for the US Air Force. Batman-Adam West, for obvious reasons. See, that whole "The Batman tv series ruined the character" meme didn't exist before the 1980s. Wonder Woman-Lynda Carter, for obvious reasons, I can't recall seeing a suggestion before her tv series, but there might have been one Aquaman-Mark Spitz. Later, Nick Nolte was suggested (possibly because of The Deep). There was an unfounded belief, in some corners, that he had starred in an unsold Aquaman pilot, which Bob Rozakis was asked about, in an Ask The Answer Man column, in the Daily Planet feature. He was puzzled by that one. Flash-Lee Majors, because on The Six Million Dollar Man, he ran at speeds of 60 miles an hour......in slow motion.....with "tchtchtchtchtchtch" sound effects. Also suggested for Green Arrow. Black Canary- Farrah Fawcett-Majors, because she was blond and on tv....maybe because she looked good in short-shorts and a tank top? I seem to recall Cheryl Ladd being suggested, after Farrah departed Charlie's Angels. Green Arrow-Frank Converse, who wasn't a big name them. He was on One Life to Live and All My Children, plus, several tv guest star roles and some movies. Green Lantern-Don Galloway, of Ironside. Hawkman-Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky & Hutch) or James Caan Atom-Jan Michael Vincent, which means the Tiny Titan would have been pretty "tight," most of the time Elongated Man-Ken Howard , of The White Shadow. I got nothing on that one. Not even Dick Van Dyke! Henry Winkler was suggested for Hawkman or the Atom  |

Bad casting is so very rarely the issue with movies and TV-series, I have difficulty to point at any movie or series that were ruined by bad casting and not bad editing, direction or writing (in that exact order).
Never cast based on looks, differences in appearance (and let's be honest, very few comic book characters have had only 1 specific face during their 50+ years career). By the time the movie comes around, make-up, training and costuming can make people look like the character (extreme example Colin Farrell as the Penguin). Make-up can't fix acting.

Robert Downey Jr. announced as Dr. Doom at SDCC. Looks like Doom will be replacing Kang as the main villian going forward. Next Avengers movie now subtitled Doomsday instead of Kang Dynasty

Robert Downey Jr. announced as Dr. Doom at SDCC. Looks like Doom will be replacing Kang as the main villian going forward. Next Avengers movie now subtitled Doomsday instead of Kang Dynasty Everything old is old again. |

That is going to be so weird! I think he can do it, but here's the thing that I wonder about. When he was Iron Man, they made a big thing about that he wanted his face on things... that really can't happen for Doom, unless it's going to be a very different Doom than we expect.

Some genius at Marvel may have decided that in a parallel universe, Tony Stark turned evil and became Doom rather than Iron Man. Lord, I hope not. |

There's not one audience member who will forget Downey Jr. was recently in the same film series across numerous films as a major character. This casting is pure desperation on Disney's part. Doctor Doom deserved better. |
