I don’t know whether this should go here or Modern comic forum I don’t know, but decided to put it here. WTF is up with all the new issues having variant covers with covers that are not even related to the said character!? I. E.. Amazing Spiderman with X-men number 1 Cover. My own theory is artists now can not draw anything but pose shots and Marvel needs action to draw the buyers’ eye. The other covers I have seen are recreations of cover classic covers with Disney characters. Now at least I know that Disney owns Marvel.

I know the feeling....you'd think this was a Spidey comic but it's not.

I have to say, not only have I never been interested in buying variant covers at all, but I also tend to think of them as "not the real cover" and therefore inferior. I guess I've never really been the target audience.

I guess I've never really been the target audience. Me too. I think when I have bought variants it’s either been because it was a Perez or Adams cover and those always had to go into my collection or I looked at the price on EBay and figured I’d try to flip it on EBay.

I pick and choose. Especially those which stand the test of time and either keep or increase in value.
But these days, everyone wants one, hoping they can then sell their 600 - 3000 copies for 5x cover price, and many of them end up going closer to cover price when no one cares.

I'll admit I bought this Amazing Spider-Man for the cover a few months back. They literally could have put twenty blank pages behind that cover and I still would have bought it.

How was story? Would 20 blank pages be better? 🤔

Batman & Santa Claus in Silent Knight....one I'd pick up even if it was blank inside

I will choose between different covers if there is more than one for retail, but I don't think I've ever bought an extra copy of something... maybe an Iron Man book or two from the dollar bin.

Publishers do whatever they have to in order to keep the lights on. One thing I didn't expect when Jim Shooter talked of his days as EiC at Marvel was learning how hard it was to just just keep the lights on. Marvel would do things like the No-Prize book not out of sudden inspiration, but because it would cost very little to produce and would bring in much-needed income. Variant covers that someone is willing to pay for are an idea in that vein. I guess things didn't change that much over the years.

A huge chunk of fandom has always struggled to accept that these are businesses.
