How many 12 year olds are just starting to buy comics in 2024? The variants are harmless. Just don’t buy them.

How many 12 year olds are just starting to buy comics in 2024? Probably the same number who buy hockey trading cards. They used to be all the rage in the schoolyard ( way more than comics) back when I was 10. Now the only people I see collecting them are adults (and not young adults). I miss the gum that came in each package.

Rags: I will not buy your stupid variants again [said in stoic defiance, using both British and Trini accents]
Dealer: Shut your piehole and check this out.
Rags: [shuts piehole]

How many 12 year olds are just starting to buy comics in 2024? The variants are harmless. Just don’t buy them. Why would a 12 year old WANT to start buying comics in 2024? 5 bucks for a pamphlet full of ads with an incomplete story and 30 bogus confusing covers to choose from? There is NOTHING to draw a kid into this terrible, inaccessible hobby.

It does suck, though, that a kid can't go into a comic shop and ask for the latest "Batman" or "Superman" or "Hulk" and always get a satisfying story that meets their expectations.

How many 12 year olds are just starting to buy comics in 2024? The variants are harmless. Just don’t buy them. Lots. They just aren't buying 21 page superhero funnybooks every Wednesday at the local funnybook store. And a lot of them started well earlier than age twelve on stuff like Dog Man, Captain Underpants, etc. and are moving on to My Hero Academia and stuff like that.

Agreed. Not to say that 12 year old kids don't look at the comics on sale at our place, but simply can't afford them. You need to have a job and a decent income to afford a few new books, or back-issues, they are no longer pocket money and haven't been for a long time. And while discounts bins fare better, no dealer is in business to make money of that sort of material, it's just there to hopefully break-even.

I don't find myself caring too much about the state of the comic book industry, especially the monthly series. If there were no more new Daredevil or FF or Thor or whatever comics that would be fine with me: I haven't read them in years and don't feel much curiosity as to what's being done with those characters now.
As long as comics in some form are being created I'll hope to find the occasional new book that I'm interested in, like Kate Beaton's Ducks last year, or the latest effort by creators whose work I usually like, e.g. Daniel Clowes, the Hernandezes, Marini, etc.

And so do millions of kids. But for some reason it's not "comics" because it's not a 32-page superhero book that appears once a month in a funnybook store.
