It's time for Top Shelf Friday again. So show us a comic that you own that you believe should be on the Top Shelf. It can be because you think the comic is important or valuable, because it's a sentimental favorite or one of your favorite stories, because it's signed and holds great memories for you, just has a really cool cover or strikes your fancy or is just plain cool-whatever the reason show us that comic. Any pic of that comic will do, but bonus points if you can show us the actual copy you own. This week I am going with King Kong #1 by Don Simpson (and signed by him at Gem City a couple years back) featuring a gorgeous Dave Stevens cover... Let's see what folks have in store for us this week... -M Fine Print so I don't repeat myself (spoilers as noone but me needs to see this for reference, but click on it if you want to see the full list)3/1/24 Son of Sinbad 3/8/24 Brave & Bold #35 3/15/24 Piracy #1 3/22/24 Conan the Barbarian #1 3/29/24 Hawk #9 4/5/24 SSWS #126 4/12/24 It Rhymes with Lust 4/19/24 Avengers #162 4/26/24 1st Issue Special 8 5/3/24 Bat Lash #2 5/10/24 Straight Arrow #3 5/17/24 Frazetta ghosted Spirit Section 5/24/24 Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters #1 signed 5/31/24 Daredevil 47 6/7/24 Batman Black and White #4 6/14/24 Daredevil 148

Keeping up with the above theme, and with a very recent addition to my pc that went straight to the top shelf, my hubby got me this Limited Edition Hardcover 'The Rocketeer' signed by Dave Stevens himself. It was a gift to cheer me up as he's away on a training course for another 6 weeks.

Not a comic, but something informative and fascinating: I never got the coloring/lettering guide, but I do have the Writing, Pencilling and Inking Guides DC put out (Denny O'Neil did the writing guide and I think it was Klaus Janson on both the art books). -M

Gonna go with yet another one of those excellent ad-free, story-packed DC anniversary books from the early 1980s, specifically Detective Comics #500: The focus is naturally on Batman, including a nice feature written by Alan Brennert and drawn by Dick Giordano and a short prose story by Shadow creator Walter Gibson, although there are also stories featuring Elongated Man and Hawkman, and a Slam Bradley (hmm, that name has a familiar ring to it) piece with guest appearances by a number of other Dectective back-up characters like Captain Compass, the unfortunately named Pow Wow Smith and Christopher Chance.
My previous picks (NSFW): {Spoiler: Click to show} 01/03/2024: Blackmark (1970s b&w pocketbook) 08/03/2024: Archie’s Superhero Comics Digest #2 15/03/2024: Donald Duck & the Golden Helmet (Whitman, 1978) 22/03/2024: Star Wars #38 28/03/2024: Showcase #100 05/04/2024: Chandler: Red Tide 12/04/2024: Alien, the Illustrated Story 19/04/2024: Amazing Spider-man Annual #10 26/04/2024: Marvel Premiere #32 03/05/2024: Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #9 10/05/2024: JLA #200 17/05/2024: Giant-Size Power Man #1 24/05/2024: Batman Annual #8 31/05/2024: Marvel 2-in-1 #51 08/06/2024: Superman #400 14/06/2024: Marvel Team-up #79

It wasn't about style but about the basics and tools of the the craft, and Janson had been teaching comic art at the NY School of Visual Arts for several years when these books were published, so he had experience in conveying those things to those learning the craft. -M

I came across this book around 1983 or so at a used book store. It's oversized, about 128 pages or so, and full of some of the funniest comics ever. Travels With Farley was about Farley, sort of a granola dude, who.. well... travels. Along the way he makes lots of friends - hippies, a WW II veteran, and a bear. among others. This book set me off on a quest to become the next great comic strip artist. Comic books? Who needs 'em? Strips were where it's at. That lasted for about a year, and then it was back to dreaming about a career in comics. Regardless, this collection is hilarious, even if Farley and co. have been forgotten to the whims of time... I will never forget how hard I laughed when the bear shaved her legs to be more "relatable" to her crush, Farley.

This week I'm choosing Avengers # 211. In my mind this started the resurgence of then Avengers title after about a year of lackluster stories. Jim Shooter took over the writing for his second tour of duty on the title and it started with this " the order changeth “issue. This might be my favorite of all the line up change issues and it's nicely drawn by Gene Colan. Gene and Marvel would part ways , and depending who you ask, it's because of Shooter or the writers that refused to work with him because they thought he was hacking the assignments. Anyway, this book ends up with the lineup being the Original 5 plus Tigra as the team. The next issue begins the fall of Yellowjacket storyline that would feature the Slap heard around the world. {Spoiler: Click to show} Avengers #4 Flash ( 1987) 1 Thor #126 Kamandi #10 What if? v1 #3 JLA v1 # 91 Marvels Greatest comics # 31 Master of Kung Fu ( Special Marvel edition) 16 Iron Man # 150 Alpha Flight #12 Superman #227 Marvel Treasury edition #28/ Superman and Spider-Man #2 Badger #1 World’s Finest 211 Flash #201 Groo #1 ( Epic)

My pick for this week is OMAC #1 I've talked at length previously about this book before and well, I guess I'll do it again. To pass the time on the weekends, I'd dig through my mom's comic book collection. Well, one day I came across OMAC. So much about the book was jarring, from the cover, to the overall concept, to even the art. It was very shocking to me much in the same way Judge Dredd #3 was. Not because it was bad, but because it FELT like a future world that could and still can happen (especially with the whole sex dolls being used to kill important people). It's a fantastic hard-science fiction take on the creation of the Superman, and I re-read it often because I simply can't get enough of it {Spoiler: Click to show}-Gumby 3-D #1 (3/22/24) -Judge Dredd #3 (3/29/24) -Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #3 (4/5/24) -Super Mario Adventures (4/12/24) -DC Special #15 (4/26/24) -Oni Press FCBD 2005 (5/10/24) -X-O Manowar #6 and Bloodshot #2 (5/17/24) -Radioactive Man #100 (5/24/24) -Shadowman #15 (5/31/24) -Captain America by Dan Jurgens volume 2 (6/7/24) -Wetworks #1 (6/14/24)
