It's that time again, Top Shelf Friday time! So show us a comic that you own that you believe should be on the Top Shelf. It can be because you think the comic is important or valuable, because it's a sentimental favorite or one of your favorite stories, because it's signed and holds great memories for you, just has a really cool cover or strikes your fancy or is just plain cool-whatever the reason show us that comic. Any pic of that comic will do, but bonus points if you can show us the actual copy you own. My entry for this week... My entry this week is not a comic but comic related-it is a shout out to the classic era of comic and fantasy art portfolios with one of the few I own, the Michael Golden Doctor Strange Portfolio.. I'm including pics of the six plates in it as well... So what do you have for us this week? What Else is on my Top Shelf...? 3/1/24 Son of Sinbad 3/8/24 Brave & Bold #35 3/15/24 Piracy #1 3/22/24 Conan the Barbarian #1 3/29/24 Hawk #9 4/5/24 SSWS #126 4/12/24 It Rhymes with Lust 4/19/24 Avengers #162 4/26/24 1st Issue Special 8 5/3/24 Bat Lash #2 5/10/24 Straight Arrow #3 5/17/24 Frazetta ghosted Spirit Section 5/24/24 Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters #1 signed 5/31/24 Daredevil 47 6/7/24 Batman Black and White #4 6/14/24 Daredevil 158 6/21/24 King Kong #1 6/28/24 Hellrider #1

Well, those excellent images by Michael Golden reminded me that I have this little gem in my modest collection of floppies, Batman Special #1 (1984)... ...featuring the story "...the Player On the Other Side" by writer Mike W. Barr, with art by Michael Golden on pencils, and Mike DeCarlo on inks. I've always loved this story, in which Bats confronts someone who is sort of his doppelganger, the world-class hitman called the Wrath - whose life of crime began when his parents were shot by a cop when he was still a child. And the art is simply lovely throughout. By the way, the image above is indeed a scan of my personal copy, but made many years ago on my dearly departed (and much missed) scanner, which had an automated 'image clean-up' function that I often used when scanning comics, esp. the covers.
My previous picks (not for the faint of heart): {Spoiler: Click to show} 01/03/2024: Blackmark (1970s b&w pocketbook) 08/03/2024: Archie’s Superhero Comics Digest #2 15/03/2024: Donald Duck & the Golden Helmet (Whitman, 1978) 22/03/2024: Star Wars #38 28/03/2024: Showcase #100 05/04/2024: Chandler: Red Tide 12/04/2024: Alien, the Illustrated Story 19/04/2024: Amazing Spider-man Annual #10 26/04/2024: Marvel Premiere #32 03/05/2024: Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #9 10/05/2024: JLA #200 17/05/2024: Giant-Size Power Man #1 24/05/2024: Batman Annual #8 31/05/2024: Marvel 2-in-1 #51 07/06/2024: Superman #400 14/06/2024: Marvel Team-up #79 21/06/2024: Detective Comics #500 28/06/2024: Avengers 1&1/2

This week I'm picking New Teen Titans # 13This issue started off maybe the best story arc in the books run. It featured the Robot man and the Titans searching for the killers of the Doom patrol. I remember reading this book on the Staten Island ferry on the way to visit my then girlfriend and first wife. The marriage didn’t take but I still have the comic. {Spoiler: Click to show} Previous weeks:
Avengers #4 Flash ( 1987) 1 Thor #126 Kamandi #10 What if? v1 #3 JLA v1 # 91 Marvels Greatest comics # 31 Master of Kung Fu ( Special Marvel edition) 16 Iron Man # 150 Alpha Flight #12 Superman #227 Marvel Treasury edition #28/ Superman and Spider-Man #2 Badger #1 World’s Finest 211 Flash #201 Groo #1 ( Epic) Avengers 211 Mr. Miracle 8 ( 1972

Some more original artwork. This time by Uncle Howard. Like Los Bros Hernandez, Howard Chaykin is one of my all time favorites. Unflinching in his works, perhaps the best historian we have and great voice in comics still going strong. His characters are powerful, music is a character in his works and plays a huge part of the world. Here's the cover for Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines. Chaykin cuts and scans his pieces in and creates his covers but here's Fletcher himself.

Thought I'd finally join the fun. This comic holds a ton of sentimental value. I'm pretty sure it's the comic I've had the longest, with my early days collection long gone. I received it as a birthday present in 1986. I've been a life long Spidey fan, and when I was a kid I really loved supervillain team ups and groups, so this one checks all the boxes

Definitely have enjoyed everyone's choices this week. This is my copy of Action #277. Love the theme (super pets are always a favorite of mine in general), I love the era, and I especially have always loved this particular cover. I even have it printed out and hanging as wall art. As an aside, I'm not sure Streaky would actually agree to wear a cape. When we've tried to put any "apparel" on our cats, one of them flops over and won't move until we take it off, and the other just tries to chew it off. Anyhow, classic silly fun, it's "my speed" often times when it comes to reading.

I love this era of DC when the annuals and specials used this trade dress. I'm sure it's nostalgia speaking as they were prime reading years, but they always really felt like events to me. I remember this one particularly well, very striking cover art, it was a must buy for me at the time!
