It's that time again, Top Shelf Friday time! So show us a comic that you own that you believe should be on the Top Shelf. It can be because you think the comic is important or valuable, because it's a sentimental favorite or one of your favorite stories, because it's signed and holds great memories for you, just has a really cool cover or strikes your fancy or is just plain cool-whatever the reason show us that comic. Any pic of that comic will do, but bonus points if you can show us the actual copy you own. This week's entry...Genius Animated The Cartoon Art of Alex Toth (as a stand in for the whole Genius trilogy about Toth's career in comics and animation). This entire trilogy is top shelf material, even if they are not exactly comics per se (though the other 2 volumes have lots of reproduced comic pages). Alex Toth's Hanna Barbera character designs are a big reason I fell in love with action adventure and super-hero stories as a kid, and informed my aesthetics of how these stories should look. Toth was a master storyteller and a magnificent character designer, and pretty much anything I own by him is top shelf material. -M 3/1/24 Son of Sinbad 3/8/24 Brave & Bold #35 3/15/24 Piracy #1 3/22/24 Conan the Barbarian #1 3/29/24 Hawk #9 4/5/24 SSWS #126 4/12/24 It Rhymes with Lust 4/19/24 Avengers #162 4/26/24 1st Issue Special 8 5/3/24 Bat Lash #2 5/10/24 Straight Arrow #3 5/17/24 Frazetta ghosted Spirit Section 5/24/24 Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters #1 signed 5/31/24 Daredevil 47 6/7/24 Batman Black and White #4 6/14/24 Daredevil 158 6/21/24 King Kong #1 6/28/24 Hellrider #1 7/5/24 Michael Golden's Doctor Strange Portfolio 7/12/24 Barbarian Comics #1 7/19/24 Phantom Stranger #1 signed

I've picked a few annuals before for these posts - because, I'll be honest, a big chunk of the floppies I currently own are annuals - but it just occurred to me that I should have highlighted this one immediately, because I think it's simply the best annual ever. I'm talking about X-men Annual #3: Such a great, action-packed story (staring with some Danger Room mayhem, then some more mayhem in the X-mansion's back yard, then yet more mayhem and heroics on Arkon's homeworld) that still has time for a few great character moments and even an abbreviated dose of the soap opera stuff from the regular series. I would say it's the best single issue of the Claremont/Byrne/Austin run, except it's penciled by George Perez. Also, the cover is one of Frank Miller's best-ever single drawings.
My previous picks, not recommended for children under the age of 18: {Spoiler: Click to show} 01/03/2024: Blackmark (1970s b&w pocketbook) 08/03/2024: Archie’s Superhero Comics Digest #2 15/03/2024: Donald Duck & the Golden Helmet (Whitman, 1978) 22/03/2024: Star Wars #38 28/03/2024: Showcase #100 05/04/2024: Chandler: Red Tide 12/04/2024: Alien, the Illustrated Story 19/04/2024: Amazing Spider-man Annual #10 26/04/2024: Marvel Premiere #32 03/05/2024: Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #9 10/05/2024: JLA #200 17/05/2024: Giant-Size Power Man #1 24/05/2024: Batman Annual #8 31/05/2024: Marvel 2-in-1 #51 07/06/2024: Superman #400 14/06/2024: Marvel Team-up #79 21/06/2024: Detective Comics #500 28/06/2024: Avengers #1&1/2 05/07/2024: Batman Special #1 (1984) 12/07/2024: Ismet #1 (Canis Publications, 1981) 19/07/2024: Detective Comics Annual #4

This week I'll go with my copy of the first Marvel Treasury Edition featuring old Webhead himself, my first and still favorite character of all time. And does it get any cooler than a jumbo sized Treasury? Not when I was little kid in the 70's at least!

This week I thought I'd finally give DC some love. Swamp Thing has been one of my favorite characters since I was 5 years old and started following Saga of the Swamp Thing from issue 1. As I got older I fell in love with the Moore/Bissette/Totleben run. A few years back I sold about 80% or more of my floppies during the covid collectables craze. The only Swamp Thing issue I kept was this annual, partly because it is in pristine condition, but mainly because it features most of the classic DC supernatural characters, whom I love

Happy Friday to you all. Figured I'd share some original artwork from a legend. I got this lovely Elecktra headshot from the Bill Sienkiewicz. Super nice fella, loved talking comics and life.

I loved reading the classic run when I was a kid, and was growing up in Vermont at the time where Bissette is from. The first convention I ever went to was local to that area and I met him and brought this very issue for him to autograph since it was a favorite. Very cool guy, and of course a great artist!

This week my pick is Superman # 176.This copy was actually given to me by MRPs_Missives about 3 years ago with a bunch of other Silver age Superman books. Thanks MRP ! I originally read this story in reprint form in Superman #241 and loved it. Superman and Supergirl start telling people the truth in a blunt fashion and when Lois and Lana asks him who between them He really loves, He gives the answer so loud that they can't hear it. He goes through the day finding loop holes to tell the truth but not compromise his privacy. It's great. It turns out the two are observing a holiday tradition from Krypton in which a person called Val-or was able to rally the people of Krypton by bluntly telling an invading race that he wished they were dead. After the Vrangs killed Val-or, The Kyptonian people rebelled and won back their world. Man, I love that story. Previous entries {Spoiler: Click to show} Avengers #4 Flash ( 1987) 1 Thor #126 Kamandi #10 What if? v1 #3 JLA v1 # 91 Marvels Greatest comics # 31 Master of Kung Fu ( Special Marvel edition) 16 Iron Man # 150 Alpha Flight #12 Superman #227 Marvel Treasury edition #28/ Superman and Spider-Man #2 Badger #1 World’s Finest 211 Flash #201 Groo #1 ( Epic) Avengers 211 Mr. Miracle 8 ( 1972) New Teen Titans 13 ( 1980) Phoenix 1 ( Atlas) Avengers V1 #12

Along with Avengers annual 9 and Iron Man Annual 4. Also the only Perez’s rendition of the X-men I've ever liked. I’ve never liked Perez’s X-men overall .
