It's that time again, Top Shelf Friday time! The founder of this fun thread MRPs_Missives has asked me to fill in this week in starting it off. So show us a comic that you own that you believe should be on the Top Shelf. It can be because you think the comic is important or valuable, because it's a sentimental favorite or one of your favorite stories, because it's signed and holds great memories for you, just has a really cool cover or strikes your fancy or is just plain cool-whatever the reason show us that comic. Any pic of that comic will do, but bonus points if you can show us the actual copy you own. This week I'm picking Fantastic Four #200.
This issue a great culmination to an 8 part story where the FF disband because Reed loses his powers. Of course he gains them back and it's all because of the machinations of Victor Von Doom in a plot to have all the FF captured and all their abilities given to his son, the next ruler of Latveria. This book has the first solo physical confrontation between Reed and Doom and writer Marv Wolfman and artist Keith Pollard totally deliver. My previous picks {Spoiler: Click to show} Avengers #4 Flash ( 1987) 1 Thor #126 Kamandi #10 What if? v1 #3 JLA v1 # 91 Marvels Greatest comics # 31 Master of Kung Fu ( Special Marvel edition) 16 Iron Man # 150 Alpha Flight #12 Superman #227 Marvel Treasury edition #28/ Superman and Spider-Man #2 Badger #1 World’s Finest 211 Flash #201 Groo #1 ( Epic) Avengers 211 Mr. Miracle 8 ( 1972) New Teen Titans 13 ( 1980) Phoenix 1 ( Atlas) Avengers V1 #12 Superman V1 #176
Can you believe that this cool thread has been coming to us in this forum for 23 weeks?

I have very fond memories of Fantastic Four #200. It came out just as I was coming out of a mostly Archie and funny animal (in turn mainly Disney ducks) detour in my comics reading; prior to that, I had only picked up an occasional issue of FF. With #200, I became a pretty regular reader for the next two years (only dropping during the Moench/Sienkiewicz run). And then Byrne came on board and I was thoroughly hooked...

It occurred to me last week, when I picked my favorite-ever annual, X-men Ann. #3, that summer is the time of annuals, so for the remainder of the season I'm going to be going with the rest of my favorite annuals (that I actually own, naturally). So this time it's Amazing Spider-man Annual #13: This is such a great one that, like the X-men annual I mentioned above, came out in that magical summer of 1979. A really good Spidey vs. Doc Ock story by Marv Wolfman that even has a cool, Twilight-Zonesque supernatural aspect tied to it. And the art, by the then at-the-peak-of-their-game John Byrne & Terry Austin (maybe this is why Bryne didn't pencil the X-men annual?), is simply, well, amazing (or spectacular, or sensational, or superior - pick your favorite Spidey-based adjective).
My previous picks, click below if you swing, or web-sling, that way: {Spoiler: Click to show} 01/03/2024: Blackmark (1970s b&w pocketbook) 08/03/2024: Archie’s Superhero Comics Digest #2 15/03/2024: Donald Duck & the Golden Helmet (Whitman, 1978) 22/03/2024: Star Wars #38 28/03/2024: Showcase #100 05/04/2024: Chandler: Red Tide 12/04/2024: Alien, the Illustrated Story 19/04/2024: Amazing Spider-man Annual #10 26/04/2024: Marvel Premiere #32 03/05/2024: Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #9 10/05/2024: JLA #200 17/05/2024: Giant-Size Power Man #1 24/05/2024: Batman Annual #8 31/05/2024: Marvel 2-in-1 #51 07/06/2024: Superman #400 14/06/2024: Marvel Team-up #79 21/06/2024: Detective Comics #500 28/06/2024: Avengers #1&1/2 05/07/2024: Batman Special #1 (1984) 12/07/2024: Ismet #1 (Canis Publications, 1981) 19/07/2024: Detective Comics Annual #4 26/07/2024: X-men Annual #3

Golden Books (Whitman, Gold Key) THE BLACK HOLE, 1980.. it was a trade paperback collection of the first 2 issues of the comic, adapting the movie. This is where I fell in love with Dan Spiegle's artwork. It sits on my shelf with Golden's other movie adaptation TPBs... Clash of the Titans (also Spiegle), and Flash Gordon by Williamson.

Think for this week I'll post Captain America #243 This book is from one of my favorite eras of Cap (post Kirby's return) just because of how they're throwing everything at the wall to make it stick (like with Cap #227 where Skull overtakes Shield and replaces all the agents with clones and #220 where introduce "Ameri-Droid", a giant robotic version of Cap that has the brain of a Nazi agent). Roger McKenzie's off and on tenure on the book was great though and nothing was better than 243 and 244 because of how much they felt like a Kirby book Basic gist is that a guy pays a bunch of goons to steal the LMD Master Matrix so that he can forge himself a new body, but then Cap intervenes and the fella doesn't get the results that he was quite expecting -Gumby 3-D #1 (3/22/24) -Judge Dredd #3 (3/29/24) -Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #3 (4/5/24) -Super Mario Adventures (4/12/24) -DC Special #15 (4/26/24) -Oni Press FCBD 2005 (5/10/24) -X-O Manowar #6 and Bloodshot #2 (5/17/24) -Radioactive Man #100 (5/24/24) -Shadowman #15 (5/31/24) -Captain America by Dan Jurgens volume 2 (6/7/24) -Wetworks #1 (6/14/24) -OMAC #1 (6/21/24) -Horus: Lord Of Light (1963 Book Five) (7/19/24)

Continuing with my personal theme so far of something I've had in my collection a long time, I got this baby in 1990 I think, when it was brand new. It contains one of my all-time favorite Cap stories, the first Sleeper epic. And I absolutely love the WW II flashback stories contained in this volume

It contains one of my all-time favorite Cap stories, the first Sleeper epic. In general, I love the WW II flashback stories contained in this volume The WWII stories are my absolute favorite and why I fell in love with the book in the first place. Had a VHS tape that collected some of the Marvel Super-Heroes cartoon serials from the 60's and watched it pretty frequently. All of the serials on that tape were the WWII stories

I've been in an Indiana Jones mood lately and went back to re-read through the Further Adventures of Indiana Jones. A fun little series with a good roster of artists; so I went back to the original mini-series. I forgot I had the Super Special Magazine of Raiders. Great Chaykin cover with Buscema interiors. Passport to adventure!

I know we're supposed to post a book/comic, but I'm going with art this week. I absolutely love this sketch of classic Princess Projectra that Mike Grell did at a convention for me a couple of years ago. It was the first time I had ever met him and just a great experience.

That's a good Amazing Spider-man annual! The story continues sort of into that year's Spectacular Spider-man, but both the stories stand well enough on their own. The ASM annual also ties into a 1950s comic series called Kent Blake of the Secret Service, which I was not familiar with so I didn't pick-up on the connection until I saw someone comment on it once.

Thanks to Icctrombone for getting this up and started this week. I was knee deep in other stuff and not doing much online the last week or so. Sorry I missed this week, I am going to try to make sure I am here on Friday to get the new one started. I'm in the middle of replacing the shelving for a large swath of my comic boxes so not getting into anything to get a pic this week. Hope to be done with that part of things by Friday, or at least a chuck of it done so books are accessible. -M

Very late on this, but I had some time as we're riding out a thunderstorm to browse through my Imgur to find a book to use for this week. This book was an early discovery for me and very influential on me in a lot of ways. I discovered it at a Scholastic Book fair in either the 4th or 5th grade (circa '77-79)-I don't remember which year, I remember which school it was and those were the 2 grades I attended there. The Al Williamson art is gorgeous, and as much as it solidified my love of Flash Gordon, it also added to my love and preference for comics in book format over periodicals at a young age-just more bang for your buck I guess. I got a couple of these Flash Gordon books, Son of Origins and some of the Tempo DC collections (as well as strip collections like Beetle Bailey, Peanuts and Hagar) all around the same time and I just wanted more books with comics rather than just comic books. -M Previous picks behind 3/1/24 Son of Sinbad 3/8/24 Brave & Bold #35 3/15/24 Piracy #1 3/22/24 Conan the Barbarian #1 3/29/24 Hawk #9 4/5/24 SSWS #126 4/12/24 It Rhymes with Lust 4/19/24 Avengers #162 4/26/24 1st Issue Special 8 5/3/24 Bat Lash #2 5/10/24 Straight Arrow #3 5/17/24 Frazetta ghosted Spirit Section 5/24/24 Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters #1 signed 5/31/24 Daredevil 47 6/7/24 Batman Black and White #4 6/14/24 Daredevil 158 6/21/24 King Kong #1 6/28/24 Hellrider #1 7/5/24 Michael Golden's Doctor Strange Portfolio 7/12/24 Barbarian Comics #1 7/19/24 Phantom Stranger #1 signed 7/26/24 Genius Animated

Is that a "pocket sized" paperback, or a TPB sized book?

Is that a "pocket sized" paperback, or a TPB sized book? Standard paperback, or "pocket sized" as you called it. Same size as the Tempo paperbacks from DC and the Pocket Books that Marvel did at the time, and the same size comic strip collections were regualarly issued in throughout the 70s. -M
