Joyce Brabner, writer, editor and wife of Harvey Pekar has died, at age 72. Brabner co-wrote Our Cancer Year with Harvey, adding her perspective on Harvey's treatment for cancer.
Brabner edited Real War Stories and Brought to Light, for Eclipse, both politically charged topics (the first dealing with resistance to the Draft, during Vietnam and the then-US involvement in Latin American wars and the second about the CIA's involvement in Latin America, in and around Iran-Contra and other elements), contributed to the benefit comic StripAIDS, Jason Rodriguez's Postcards, the anthology The Beats, and Second Avenue Cape: When Goodfellas, Divas and Dealers Plotted Against the Plague.
She met Harvey after sending him a postcard, trying to obtain a copy of American Splendor #6, they shared correspondence, then met and later married. Together, they became legal guardians to and raised Danielle Batone and appeared as characters in Harvey's work. She was portrayed by Hope Davis, in the film version of American Splendor, and appeared as herself, alongside Harvey and friend Toby Radloff, within segments of the film, commenting on scenes dramatized.
