It probably won’t surprise you to read that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was rebranded as “Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles” over here because the word “ninja” was considered problematic, although the ninjas seen in G.I. Joe weren’t censored. Don't forget that the Foot Clan was suddenly made up of androids in the cartoon because having kids watch them use those weapons on actual people would have been...a lot. I do like that scene in the first episode where the Turtles realize that they're fighting robots, but it's only after Raphael tries to stab one with his sai.

The weirdest thing though about "toning it down" with the turtles was the fact that they completely got rid of Mikey's Nunchaku at one point and replaced it with a grappling hook. Like a pair of wooden sticks attached to a chain is any less violent than katanas or sai daggers...

Kids are (hopefully) smart enough to realize you shouldn't stab someone, but swinging around chains and sticks to look like Michaelangelo could have resulted in ER trips. I myself sent a kid go the nurse's office trying to be Donatello. Oops.

There are all sorts of weird censorship stories.
There was an episode of Airwolf featuring an identical helicopter (Redwolf), piloted by a villain. That didn’t get aired in my area at one point, so I did actually e-mail the channel (ITV) and ask why. Apparently, they chose not to air it as there’s a scene where Redwolf fires a laser at Airwolf.
What?! Sorry, but an idiot made that decision. How could firing a laser, which does some slight damage to Airwolf’s tail rotor, possibly be unsuitable for anyone? Did they believe we’d all acquire our own helicopter, attach a laser firing device to it and start attacking other helicopters? That some muppet working for ITV could omit that episode from a run based on that defies belief. I believe it did air later on.

This series was a "Jem" in my opinion. Loved the music and the whole "80's" vibe of it. And oh Pizzazz, so bad but you had to love her!

An early Chris Columbus creation, this is one of my absolute favorite 80's shows. Who wouldn't want to go to high school in space?

AdTube hasn’t made that video available in my country, but I can accurately guess that it’s Galaxy High. I know it was popular enough here to warrant a comic strip in one title.

The extended version is so cool.
I used to go to girls' houses to play with their Jem dolls.

It does now, thank you. Seems to be happening more and more with AdTube. I know there are legal realities, but I often find it ironic that something like Star Trek, an inclusive and hopeful fictional universe which spans the globe, often restricts what ads it shows to the world, good luck on seeing, say, a Discovery clip unless you happen to be in a certain postcode. Let us see it so we can spread the word.
Did you watch much of Galaxy High?

This was another Saturday morning fave. I wish, and this isn’t a criticism of just that show, that we could have had some resolutions to the series. Would have been nice to see them get back to their dimension? (Didn’t they return at least once, but were forced back?) And did anyone in the U.S. government actually bother to check on that ride? Missing rollercoaster riders should have drawn some attention! Loved it, though, and I like that a certain piece of incidental music was shared between this series and The Incredible Hulk.

I did, something just hit that right spot for me, loved the wild cast of characters (mostly aliens, it was just Aimee and Doyle who were there from Earth) plus the backdrop of being in space. Goofy light-hearted fun, and yet another super catchy theme song. I have all the episodes on 2 DVD's, they get watched a lot still!

Good. That also reminds me, we live in a world where physical media is declining, and some, including friends of mine, suggest streaming is the be-all and end-all. But what are the odds that Galaxy High (or any of the shows mentioned here) aren’t on Netflix or any service?
I just checked to see if Galaxy High is on any platform by typing its title into Just Watch, which lets you know which streaming platforms a series or film is on. It is not available for streaming anywhere. So I guess it’s important we protect and preserve physical media.
