IDW’s Back to the Future comic explored new adventures by filling in the gaps left by the movies, which meant we got stories which built upon the films’ plotlines, offered additional context/backstory, and complemented what we had seen over three films. So we got stories like Doc Brown working on the Manhattan Project, and Marty McFly meeting Doc.
Of the six TOS films, if you could see a mini-series which would build upon those films’ plotlines, and offer backstory and the like, which film would you choose?
I don’t know if this has been covered in any media, but I’d choose a mini-series based on Sybok as seen in The Final Frontier. What led him to his path? What made him the person he is? Why did it lead him to the quest he went on in that film?
Over to you.

I was tempted to say Star Trek TMP; but, that was explored at Marvel and in novels. DC's picked up after Wrath of Khan and the others. Really, I think it would be interesting to see the crew winding down their careers.

I went with The Final Frontier. Flawed as it is, I have a soft spot for the film. Sybok's a compelling character I've long wanted to know more about.

Undiscovered Country, mainly because I'd love a series focused on Sulu as captain of the Excelsior (I still think a movie should have been made with this premise back in the mid-1990s).

I picked the first one, I've always had a soft spot for the Original Motion Picture.
While not nearly the action packed excitement of say Wrath of Kahn (my exceedingly close second favorite), it has this "pure sci fi" aspect to it that captures the whole vastness and mystery of space in such a compelling way for me. I also think since it is directly the entry point back from the original TV series to the later years, there's lots of room for interesting backstory development.
I literally just pulled out my 6-disc collection of these earlier this week and was watching a few, this excellent thread is well-timed for me!

I like TMP too. It does indeed capture the vastness and mystery of space, and while watching it, I was thinking about how big space was - and how little the crew knew of what was out there.

I went for the Star Trek: The Motion Picture era. I love that film and agree with supercat's comment about it being by far the closest to "pure sci-fi" of all the ST films.

Haven't any of them already been adapted into comics?

Haven't any of them already been adapted into comics? All the movies have been adapted into comics at various points, yes. But I think driver is asking about spin-off series set around the same time as each film that flesh out events in those films.

OP: DC's 1st Star Trek comic (beginning in February of 1984) sort of addressed what you're asking, with the comic following TWOK and its consequences, although some fans sort of viewed those stories in an almost "alternate reality" sort of way, since there was no way to insert all of the published adventures in-between TWOK and TSFS, the latter only having a short gap of time between it and its predecessor. Undiscovered Country, mainly because I'd love a series focused on Sulu as captain of the Excelsior (I still think a movie should have been made with this premise back in the mid-1990s). George Takei was always campaigning for a "Captain Sulu" movie, but it appeared Paramount was not at all interested and/or did not see him as the lead character / subject of a movie, hence the reason he would only receive a cameo to his Undiscovered Country time on the Excelsior in an episode of Voyager titled--appropriately enough-- "Flashback".

I see - yes, I didn't read the original post correctly. Don’t let it happen again. Just joking. Anyway, yes, I’m thinking of the Back to the Future template: when I first heard there was gonna be a BTTF comic, I was a little dismayed as I expected sequels to the films. Oh great, I thought, Marty McFly in the Stone Age, or Doc reassembling the DeLorean. But I like that they fleshed out things. If I had to pick favourite comic stories of the last decade, Doc working on the Manhattan Project, and Marty meeting Doc, would be on the list. I commend them for fleshing things out rather than doing a direct sequel.

In my opinion, Paramount have made many decisions I disagree with. Not giving us a Deep Space Nine film for one (I have zero interest in the Abrams timeline). Not giving us a Sulu movie or series is another bad decision, I feel.

1. A series dedicated to Phase II - the second 5 year mission. 2. A series with Sulu as Captain, Chekov first officer, Chapel as Chief Medical Officer, Rand as Communications officer and new characters filling other positions. 3. Uhura as Captain of a diplomatic ship.
