It's Top Shelf Friday time! So show us a comic (or comic-related or comic-tangential item) that you own that you believe should be on the Top Shelf. It can be because you think the comic is important or valuable, because it's a sentimental favorite or one of your favorite stories, because it's signed and holds great memories for you, just has a really cool cover or strikes your fancy or is just plain cool-whatever the reason show us that comic. Any pic of that comic will do, but bonus points if you can show us the actual copy you own. This week's pick, one of the sketch covers we commissioned-Green Arrow, with his traditional look designed by Neal Adams and debuting in B&B 85 Van Dyke and all, is one of Mrs.MRP's favorite super-hero looks, so we had a local artist, Justin Wasson, do a sketch of Ollie in that look on one of the blank Green Arrow covers I had. -M Previous picks 3/1/24 Son of Sinbad 3/8/24 Brave & Bold #35 3/15/24 Piracy #1 3/22/24 Conan the Barbarian #1 3/29/24 Hawk #9 4/5/24 SSWS #126 4/12/24 It Rhymes with Lust 4/19/24 Avengers #162 4/26/24 1st Issue Special 8 5/3/24 Bat Lash #2 5/10/24 Straight Arrow #3 5/17/24 Frazetta ghosted Spirit Section 5/24/24 Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters #1 signed 5/31/24 Daredevil 47 6/7/24 Batman Black and White #4 6/14/24 Daredevil 158 6/21/24 King Kong #1 6/28/24 Hellrider #1 7/5/24 Michael Golden's Doctor Strange Portfolio 7/12/24 Barbarian Comics #1 7/19/24 Phantom Stranger #1 signed 7/26/24 Genius Animated 8/2/24 Flash Gordon: The Ice Monster 8/9/24 Space Science Fiction-God in the Bowl 8/16/24 Flash Comics #1 Millennium Edition 8/23/24 New Gods #7 8/30/24 Airboy #5 9/6/24 DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #4

This is a book I picked up about a month and half ago and posted in the new purchases already, but going to present it today because I'd like to add more commentary on why it's extra special to me. Obviously GS X-Men #1 is an exceedingly well-known Bronze Age "key" and all that, but for me it's more the association with the following: 1) The Legion of Super-Heroes by way of Dave Cockrum. I'm a massive Legion fan and love many eras, but the 70's will always be my favorite and Cockrum really helped launch that era including his ever snazzy character designs. Knowing that his shift to Marvel and X-Men brought some of his unused concepts for the Legion into the X-Men books is almost a "continuation" of sorts from a sheer character design standpoint for me. 2) It is my "spiritual kick-off" to the latter part of the 70's that were my earliest reading years. Seeing the new team burst into action on the cover kind of celebrates the freshness of the era overall for me as a new reader back in the day. 3) I simply love this incarnation of the X-Men and the era that followed particularly with the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne/Austin years. And I love this issue, when this showed up I couldn't wait to finally read it in original form even though I know it so well from reprints over the years (I actually immediately cracked it open and read it cover to cover). And the experience did not disappoint. So here she is, my personal copy:

Well, the weather has taken a turn for the worse here (rainy and pretty friggin' cold for this time of year), but I'm sticking to my guns in considering September summer, so my summer of annuals continues. This time, it's Thor Annual #13: I'd already written about this one in another thread a few years ago ( and you can check it out for more details as well as an additional image from the actual book), but here I'll just say that this one merits its place on my top shelf thanks to John Buscema's stunningly gorgeous art (which I still think is the best work he's ever done). I should add, though, that the cover is one of the best Simsonson produced during his run on that title - which is saying a lot, given how many outstanding covers he handed in at the time.
My previous picks (abandon all hope, ye who click here):

I foreshadowed this week's pick yesterday in the Name One game. I'm a big fan of classic Li'l Abner and I found this at a used bookstore in Vancouver a few months back. It's a first edition from 1953. One of favorite finds from the last few years

I might get laughed into oblivion for this one...this HC, almost 400 pages, collects a vast majority of golden-age material from the 40s and 50s in one compact 4lb volume. The variety is quite immense, from Dell to DC to Archie and a range of indies from that era. I got it for 1/4 RRP which was a bonus.

No laughter here, that volume looks delightful and you just gave me a gift idea for my wife who would especially appreciate this (though I'm sure I'll sneak a read of it as well!). Nice!

That turned out great! I never made the connection that people were using the blank cover variants for this (I'm probably way behind the times as usual, and it's probably like duh, what did you think those were for haha), how cool you have both an art commission and a "unique" comic book now all in one, that's awesome.

I've gotten several blank cover commissions done (my Action #1000 is a jam cover with contributions by several artists). I'll get around to posting more of them in Top Shelf Friday threads eventually. -M

Oh yeah, I have a lot of blank covers. My favorite character is Janet Van Dyne, aka Wasp and I have a lot sorts of variation of her in her costumes. I also have get Disney duck covers too. One of my favorite artists, when I see her at shows I get at least 2 covers from her. Actually one Top Shelf is going to be a sketch cover.... coming soon.

Today's Top Shelf Friday, to continue with MRPs_Missives and his sketch covers. My favorite Marvel character is The Wasp. When I go to shows I'll usually get a commission or 2 from an artist, barring getting on thier commission list. This one I got from the wonderful Daniel Brereton. Creator of the brilliant Nocturnals. I also booth at conventions for the Hero Initiative and he was one of our guests. I asked him for a cover and took it home with hime to take some time. Ta-da!

My pick is probably one of the first comics that I ever owned, Adventures In The DC Universe #7 Always loved this issue and very happy that it survived years in the garage in our old house basically untouched for twenty some odd years. For those that don't know, AITD basically was an attempt to broaden the scope of the Batman and Superman TAS series shows with streamlined versions of the characters for impressionable children (such as myself). I'm not sure how far off this was from the extremely popular Justice League cartoons, but it AITD was a nice series that's often overlooked. It was also drawn and written by Steve Vance of Bongo Comics fame (Radioactive Man specifically) -Gumby 3-D #1 (3/22/24) -Judge Dredd #3 (3/29/24) -Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #3 (4/5/24) -Super Mario Adventures (4/12/24) -DC Special #15 (4/26/24) -Oni Press FCBD 2005 (5/10/24) -X-O Manowar #6 and Bloodshot #2 (5/17/24) -Radioactive Man #100 (5/24/24) -Shadowman #15 (5/31/24) -Captain America by Dan Jurgens volume 2 (6/7/24) -Wetworks #1 (6/14/24) -OMAC #1 (6/21/24) -Horus: Lord Of Light (1963 Book Five) (7/19/24) -Captain America #243 (8/2/24) -Powerpuff Girls #7 (8/9/24) -Hardcase #1 (8/16/24) -Rune #0 (8/23/24) -The Maxx #5 (9/6/24)
