Yes folks, it might still feel like summer weather wise(atleast here in New England) but September is drawing to a close which means it's time to resurrect an old tradition... and so to give the event life I invoke the following incatation: Darkness falls across the land The midnight hour is close at hand Creatures crawl in search of blood To terrorize y'all's...TV SCREENS! Yes, I think that's done it...I think I see it starting to twitch in it's sarcophagus...it's ALIVE! It's... The Classic Comic Forum's Thirty One Nights of Halloween! It's been a few years so you may not remember how it works, or you could be brand new and in which case ::Ahem:: I bid you welcome, please enter of your own free will... I'm your host and it's simple to join, all you have to do is create an entry post which you will later use to log the films you watch during the month of October. After everyone has created their opening posts feel free to then discuss the films you watch or even post reviews of them which can be as brief or detailed as you like! The goal of course is to watch as many horror movies as you can before the stroke of midnight on October the 31st when the spell wears off and the event returns to its deathly slumber once again. Other wise it's just like Who's Line Is It Anyway where "the points don't matter and there are no rules." If there's a film that you've always associated with the Halloween season for whatever reason even if it might not get filed away with the horror films at your local library...then it counts. Halloween holiday specials, monster themed kids movies, or Godzilla? Yup, they all count. The main point is to have fun, which also means don't stress; if you find that say shaxper has already watched forty films in the first week alone you shouldn't feel pressured to call out of work, push your friends and family away, lock yourself in your basement and force your self to wear the head gear from Clock Work Orange all just so you can go toe to toe with him...unless of course that is your idea of fun...then I guess have at it! Watch as little or as much as you like. The tally begins October first but feel free to create your opening post now but the tallies themselves won't "count" until the first of October.

Thanks for starting this up again, thwhtguardian! I am so psyched to do this again! As October is always a busy month for me (near the end of the grading period for school) I watch as much as I can in September. Let's see, I've already re-watched You'll Find Out (1940), Return of The Vampire (1944), I Walked With A Zombie (1943), White Zombie (1932), Zombies on Broadway (1945), Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla (1952), Prometheus (2012), and if there's no year cut-off anymore, then I watched The Nun II (2023) and Alien: Romulus (2024) too. It's been a lot of fun, but it will be even more fun discussing it here! Can't wait for October 1st. ______________ 1. Dr. Renault's Secret (1942) 7/10 2. Bloodlust (1961) 5/10 3. I always make a point to try to watch some sort of horror related tv or movies close to Hallowe’en, so I should definitely have something to log here. I don’t mind watching these at other times of year, but I think it’s appropriate to try to fit in as many as I can around this season. It’s different when it comes to Christmas themed movies which I try to contain to December, with a cut-off not too much past Boxing Day. I usually consider mystery, or suspense in the same category as horror, and don’t care if the tone is serious or humorous.
I watched the below classic Universal Monster movies last year, and they’re still too fresh in my memory for me to revisit this year, especially since I’ve got plenty of other ones I’ve been meaning to get to. I’ve always enjoyed the shared universe aspect of the Universal Monster movies that eventually came about. I think it works well enough even though it was unplanned and has casting changes, and continuity issues. It’s definitely better than some modern movie franchises which have attempted to create a shared universe on purpose.
Even though I won’t be watching these this year, here is my preferred order to watch them.
Dracula Dracula's Daughter Son of Dracula
Frankenstein The Bride of Frankenstein Son of Frankenstein
The Wolfman
The Ghost of Frankenstein Frankenstein meets the Wolfman House of Frankenstein House of Dracula
And also these three series, which work pretty well in their respective groups:
The Mummy series The Invisible Man series The Creature series
These, of course, are always followed by Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein, as well as the comedy duo’s other monster movies
I’m going to assume my DVD includes that alternate audio track for Dracula, so that will probably be the only one I’m going to re-watch. I’ll update this post in October to note that and what ever else I end up watching. Looking forward to what everyone else comes up with (some of which may be so good, that I'll probably find myself changing course and adding those to my list)
**Watch this space for updates**
Week 1
Dracula (1931)
I watched this with the alternate score, thanks to Shaxper's recommendation. I've always like the movie with its usual score, but I'll have to make a note to alternate with this version on occasion, just to keep things interesting
Cat People (1942) Curse of the Cat People (1944)
I'd never watched these before, and didn't even know what they were about, but I probably heard the names somewhere. TCM had both of them back-to-back and they sounded like horror/mystery type movies, so that caught my attention. I'm glad I watched these. They're not really scary movies, or at least not what I consider scary, but I think they're really well done. The second movie was my favourite of the two
On the TV side of things, I caught up with the first 3 episodes of Agatha All Along. I didn't like Wandavision as much as other people seem to, but I did like the parts with Agatha Harkness, and I'm enjoying this series. I'll probably catch up this week on episode 4, (and 5 as well, once its out). I think this wraps up towards the end of October which seems appropriate
I've probably got a few other movies either stored on my PVR, or set to record, plus whatever catches my eye on the streaming services. I don't necessarily have time to watch movies everyday, but I'll fit in as many as I can
Week 2
I managed to fit in a few more movies, mostly older ones. I don't purposely go looking for older movies, but these always seem to catch my attention. I'm trying to make an effort to move towards some more later films before the end of the month. I doubt I'll have time to watch everything I've lined up, so I'll likely keep going with some of these into November
Nosferatu (1922)
I've watched this one once before years ago, but the version I watched this month seems to be different than what I remember. This version used character names from Dracula, but I'm pretty sure the one I watched before distanced itself from the source material by using original names to avoid infringement problems.
Poltergeist (1982)
I watched this about 40 years ago when I was a kid at a friends house, but don't think I ever had opportunity to rewatch it. I remembered the basic plot well enough, but probably enjoyed it more now that I was old enough to appreciate it. I've never seen the sequels, but I think they're streaming on a service I've got available, so I'll make a point to watch those next week.
The Black Cat (1934)
I had my PVR set to record this just because it had Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi, a couple of actors that that usually catch my attention, together or individually. I didn't recall watching it before, but once it started I realized I had seen it not too long ago. Chances are I watched it before for the same reason I did this year. It's based on an Edgar Allan Poe story which I don't believe I've ever read. It occurred to me that I've had a collection of Poe's works sitting on a shelf, right next to where I'm typing this, which I've never actually read, so I'll make an effort to climb up there and check it out to see if this one is included. At the very least, I'm sure I can find something else in it I'd like to read.
Spooks Run Wild (1941)
This one I knew I had seen, but it's one I always like, and it's got Béla Lugosi. The movie is part of the Dead End Kids, East Side Kids, Bowery Boys series. I've watched a bunch of these over the years. I can never remember which name they use for any of their films, but I enjoy them all and don't really care. Whatever they call themselves, there's always something to make me laugh.
I also caught up with all the available episodes of Agatha All Along, so I'll try to watch the remaining episodes weekly as they're released which should take me through the end of the month.
Week 3-4
Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
Poltergeist III (1988)
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
I probably won't get too much of a chance to watch any more movies before the end of the month, but I've got the remaining episodes of Agatha All Along, which I think finishes off this week. I've still got a few movies which I expect I'll get around to in November. I've added a few more to why my watch list, inspired by some of the ones mentioned in this thread, which I hope to get to as well.

Super excited for this regardless of how many films I end up watching. Didn’t shaxper make a list at some point about his 50 favorite horror films?

Super excited for this regardless of how many films I end up watching. Didn’t shaxper make a list at some point about his 50 favorite horror films? Indeed I did. Some of my rankings have changed in the years since, and there are a few I'd probably add to the list now, but it still holds up more than it doesn't.

Yes, I'll reserve a space. I have a pretty good list started of some that I'd like to see this October and will add to it as I think of more. Not sure how many I'll get to see but I'm hoping to get through a lot.

I've lately upgraded a bunch of my movies to 4K UHD discs but haven't actually gotten around to watching them, and several fall under horror (Dario Argento's Deep Red, Suspiria, and Phenomena) or modern monster movies (Alien, Aliens, Tremors, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Dog Soldiers). This would be a good excuse to pull them out and justify the purchases.
I also recently learned that Lars von Trier's supernatural TV show The Kingdom unexpectedly got a third and concluding series in 2022 (the first two series aired in 1994 and 1997, but the deaths of two major cast members soon afterward seemed to end hopes for a continuation) and a complete release on Blu-Ray, which I bought immediately. I'll enjoy watching that finally as well.

I'm not much for horror; but, by Lugosi, I'll give it a shot. It might be limited; but, it is an excuse to watch some films I have saved up.
And remember, there is nothing more horrifying than a Shirley Temple film!
