This had to be the quintessential ad. It had some minor variations over the years, but the same "Beach Bully" story was always at the heart of it. Thank goodness Mac finally became a "man" lol.

It's 1968 and I noticed in Marvel Comics this classified ad running every month. I lived in Queens, NYC and the ad's address was a short subway ride away. So I sent away for the catalogue and then visited that address which turns out to be a thrift shop. Robert Bell also had a section for old comics. Began going to that store every other week and filled in the early Marvels I missed from 1962 and 1963. Think I paid about $7 or $8 for FF # 1. Eventually Robert Bell moved to Florida but continued to sell old comics via Marvel's classified ad section $7 or 8 for a FF1! Amazing! When I was little I met my grandmother's cousin at a wedding, and was fascinated to talk to the man with the New York accent. I figured everyone from New York must love comics for some reason so told him I collected comics too. He told me to keep them safe, as his mum had binned his collection of the earliest Superman and Batman comics from his childhood! He'd gone off to college and came back home to discover his mum had been through his things and chucked away all his 'kid' stuff without bothering to check with him. 😂😭

Great topic.
I couldn’t really send away for US stuff because the costs might have been prohibitive, and the dreaded “No shipping outside North America” might have applied.
There were some UK ads I responded to. Seems hard to find an image of UK ads, but if I find what I need, I will share it here.

Seeing this through more cynical eyes, it seems the muscle-building program also gave him courage. I mean, extra mass doesn’t necessarily make you more courageous. Well, good for him!

Ah, the classic Charles Atlas 98lb weakling advert! I've seen that so very many times.

Just back issue catalogues. I did the Westfield subscription service for a few months when I was in high school. I’m guessing I found Amazing Heroes through an ad. I subscribed to it for probably two or three years.

A lot of us grew up with old school ads in comic books. Become muscle-bound, sell GRIT newspapers, buy x-ray specs, take a correspondence course, etc. Columbia House records or tapes (fess up, who scored a stack of 8-tracks for a penny)? Who picked spinet organ versus guitar or piano in the "learn an instrument" ad? If you mailed away for this amazing opportunity, let's hear it! I'm sure you know about the history of Sea Monkeys... www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2004/hitler-and-sea-monkeys

Like others, I ordered subscriptions to Marvel in the 80s. Never did with any of the toys, posters, or Aurora Models.

It WAS fun having that long form (with carbon copies!) to pre-order lots of stuff (especially since I was living in a more remote place at the time), but eventually I gravitated back towards just buying books from the local shops.

Did anyone ever send in that penny to get 12 records / tapes for 1c?
I heard they owned your soul after that....

I did in high school once, I forget if it was Columbia House or BMG. Got my initial stack of CD's, then had to actually buy a few more to "meet my obligation". It was still a great deal overall I thought. The rub was staying on top of these little cards they'd send you each month, they'd have a new album pre-selected for you and if you didn't mail back the card in time saying you didn't want it, they'd send you that album and bill you for it. It was easy to cancel though once you had met all the initial obligation (at least it was for me).

The closest comic shop growing up was 155 miles away. So I was at the mercy of grocery/drug/convenience store spinner racks. So for a short time Westfield was great. But then I started driving and all that spare money went to gas.

I really came in at the tail end of all of this, but I did order a subscription of the late 1980's Superboy comic book (based on the TV show) solely because of the giveaway poster promised in a house ad.

I do remember the Columbia House ads in US comics. Now, they were US only, but we did have a similar company over here called Britannia Music. Did anybody sign up to one of Columbia’s enticing offers?
