I do remember the Columbia House ads in US comics. Now, they were US only, but we did have a similar company over here called Britannia Music. Did anybody sign up to one of Columbia’s enticing offers? Yes. It was a great way to build my vinyl album/8 track/cassette/CD collection. I was OCD enough to mail back the card for albums I didn't want in time.

This was our equivalent of Columbia House:

I signed up to a book club that promised 5 books for £1, and you could order art books and trade paperbacks. I picked 5 of the most expensive books, fulfilled my obligation after that and immediately quit the book club. Then I signed up again the next year using my nan's address and repeated the trick- this time you could pick some sets rather than just single books. That was great Edit: It was called Fantasy and Science Fiction Book Club. Hardback novels were the shrunken book club versions, but graphic novels and trades were perfect.

Can’t find a pic of the ad, though (only US equivalents). I did quite like waiting for the monthly - or was it bi-monthly? - catalogue.

I was a long-time member of the Science Fiction Book Club, but it wasn't from a comic book ad. More likely an ad in a SF digest or a paperback. I still love those big SFBC omnibus books. And that was the only way to get hardcovers of classic SF books for eons.

I did like those pamphlet style catalogues. I was so excited for the deliveries, I recall, and it introduced me to so many new authors I'd never heard of. I wish I was able to read as much now as I did back then- I consumed endless books and comics, that I owned or borrowed.

I can't recall where I would have seen it advertised- 2000AD maybe? The only magazines I bought reviewed video games... Perhaps their flier was dropped in with my comics? Or even mailed?

I let myself down at times by ending up with books I didn’t want. You were supposed to tick the “I do not want the editor’s choice book this month…” box and return in the post, but on occasion, I forgot - and by the time I ended up with the books, I couldn’t be bothered to send them back.

A friend of mine at school brought in some of his books when he joined and the hardcovers looked great and that convinced me to join. I don't remember how long I was a member but it was a pretty good stretch for sure.

I liked the Editor's choice books I ended up with- that was my first encounter with Terry Pratchett's work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_Club_Associates It was part of this corporation, and was co-owned by WHSmith, a company I now detest but loved as a child. Maybe the fliers came from there? Otherwise, I bet it came with a bunch of other fliers and pamphlets we used to get sent due to my mother enjoying shopping from catalogues. Now I think about it I'm sure I saw their fliers month after month, before they finally improved their introductory offer one month.

I do remember the Columbia House ads in US comics. Now, they were US only, but we did have a similar company over here called Britannia Music. Did anybody sign up to one of Columbia’s enticing offers? Yes, twice: once when I was just starting high school, and then the second time before my freshman year of college. It was for cassettes both times, and both times I made the minimum purchase of 3 additional albums at their slightly inflated regular prices and then terminated my membership. Honestly, it was was a good deal for me both times. Edited to add: Neither time did I order them based on a comic book ad; it was from a regular magazine - I'm pretty sure the first time was from Parade, a supplement to many Sunday editions of newspapers in the US.

Anyone know why the first time I click on a link on these boards it always directs me to "redirect viglink" first? My adblocker stops it from loading, whatever it is.

Honestly, it was was a good deal for me both times. My sister was signed up to the UK equivalent, Britannia- the deal was that if I could get the books then she could have the CDs. Edit: This is proving a fun trip down memory lane- my sis was well ahead of the curve with CDs, and I languished with vinyl and cassettes for a good few years longer... When my niece came to visit last year she saw a cassette tape on a bookcase, and asked me what it was! haha
