A follow up to the greatest single issue thread. Which comic/graphic novel/trade do you open up just to admire the art, or think is simply better drawn than others? One rule to this thread: the art must feature hand drawn line art! Oh, come on. Even great, enshrined-in-the-Heavens comic art has innumerable fellow entries.
..and just line art? If its a comic book, but it has painted interiors, I rate it alongside traditional line art.

Barry Smith's Red Nails, first serialized in Savage Tales#2-3 and oft reprinted, starting with Marvel Treasury Edition #4 and Les Humanoïdes associés's Les Clous Rouges.
Sheer awesomeness.

I always thought Red Nails was first printed in the regular Conan book.

I always thought Red Nails was first printed in the regular Conan book. That's what I thought too, but Wikipedia and GCD have it debuting in Savage Tales a full ten years earlier.

No it was b&w in Savage Tales. I don't think it was ever in the regular Conan book. Barry Smith did color it himself for the Treasury Edition. I have the Archives Edition from that video. The art has to be seen like that.
An aside to Red Nails. When Buscema took over Conan, Roy Thomas wanted to keep that intricate ink work Smith did on Red Nails. So after the first Buscema issue (well inked by brother Sal) Thomas put on Ernie Chua and had him do all that fussy linework. To me that was stuffing shoes into a hat box. Buscema and Smith had different aesthetics and Smith's own inking was organic to his art. I never felt Chua was a good fit to Buscema, his rougher style ran counter to Big John's more fluid pencils. Their later work did improve, but I always felt it was two styles that did not compliment each other. Roy should have stuck with writing and not show how little he understood art. "let's make John Buscema look like Barry Smith" doesn't make sense.
