I picked up Absolute Batman #2 up grudgingly because the shop "forgot" to cancel and it was in my box and I hope the mistake doesn't repeat itself because this just wasn't my jam. It just seems so uninspired and it tries way too hard to be extreme. You can't just have bats break out and inspire him, no they literally maul him in this version. And you can't just have a cool car for the Batmobile, no you have to up the anti. What's cooler and darker than a suped up muscle car ? A tank? No...that's been done...how about a giant bat-dump truck!
I mean, I give it points for sheer balls to the walls lunacy and it did actually make me smile...but it didn't last. How did it get there? Where can you realistically go in it to escape? It just doesn't make any sense and sticks out like the bat axe in the first issue. There's a way to do a book that feels like something you would have dreamed up as a twelve year old kid and still make it a good read. Mark Waid's run on World's Finest is an example of that but sadly this wasn't.

PKJ's Batman and Robin however was awesome. It had a great mix of action and character moments coupled with a fun "who done it" plot. I loved the father-son moments between Damian and Bruce and although we get yet another mentor who trained Bruce and a villain hitherto unknown villain from his past returning it was still a fun read.

I rarely like Snyder's superhero work but I've generally enjoyed his independent work, especially his horror work so I was interested to see him take on sci-fi with Arcbound...but it left me pretty disappointed. With a sci-fi book you really have to sell the world you're creating and the characters you're focusing on fast and this did neither. I don't really know anything about the main character and I'm struggling to even remember his name even though I just finished reading the comic a few seconds ago and I know nothing of interest about his world or why I should care about what's going on in it. I don't need all the answers right off the bat but I need some to keep my interest and there just wasn't enough to make it worth seeing more.

Jonny Quest continues to amaze me, it's just a really well done adventure. These kind of out of time stories often feel tired but Joe Casey manages to some how make this feels fresh and new and I'm really interested to see the curtain pulled back so we can find out just what's going on between Zin and Old Man Jonny Quest.

Action Comics #1075. Really enjoying the Superman on Krypton (in the past) main story. The Supergirl back up still is not getting better. The Perry White back up was fantastic. Loved the art.

Seems Diamond failed to ship Dynamite and Boom ! titles to many shops this week, my lcs among them, so I didn't get Jonny Quest or Space Ghost this week. Replacement shipments are supposed to arrive before next week, so I will get them then.

Mark Waid's run on World's Finest is an example of that but sadly this wasn't. I have the basic plan subscription for DC Universe Infinite so it takes longer for recent issues to drop down for me to read (which is normally fine with me. I'll get to them when I get to them). So I was highly surprised to see that AB #1 is already available for me to read. Maybe they're trying to capitalize on it's popularity and build up support for the line by doing so. So maybe that'll mean #2 will be available shortly. I'll read it when(ever) it does just to see where(ever) it goes.

Action Comics #1075. Really enjoying the Superman on Krypton (in the past) main story. The Supergirl back up still is not getting better. The Perry White back up was fantastic. Loved the art. Yeah, the main story really is amazing, I loved Clark getting to meet Kara as a little girl and his reaction was perfect. The Superboy/Super-Man side plot doesn't do much for me however and I've continued to just skip the Supergirl back up completely to the point that I had no idea there even was a Perry White back up after it...I'll have to go back and check that out.

Read my Marvel stuff tonight (some from last week...)
NYX #5 : I'm enjoying this far more than I thought I would... I got it for Kamala Khan, but honestly I didn't think I'd like it. Turns out, its a great book, and feels like the characters in it are being allowed to move forward. Sophie Cuckoo is surprisingly awesome. I just hope they let them be friends and not a couple... not every two people that like each other need to be romantically involved, and Marvel seems obsessed with making everyone bi-sexual these days.
Exceptional X-Men #2 : This felt like been there done that, but its really well written... Kitty is being written the way I think she should be (though, as per my earlier note, when did she start dating women?) It'll be interesting to see what they do with Emma Frost after Duggan's Iron Man run. What the X-Universe doesn't need is more young mutants that will be stuck at as eternal young adults, but it was interesting enough I can enjoy it as its own thing (so far, as soon as it starts crossing over I'm probably out)
Speaking of.... Iron Man #1 I love corporate intrigue in Iron Man, but it has to make sense. If he bought the company back (which was implied, then he can either fire and replace the board, or there is no board of directors. If he didn't there is no way they pick him to be CEO again when he wants to stop doing what they are making money with with no plan to do something else.T here is ZERO chance he can use money to become CEO, but still have it be a public company. That's not how it works.
Also, they made him look like an imbecile... the bad guys just stole his armor and took over the suit he was wearing.. really? Just once I'd like them to not start an Iron Man series by kicking the crap out of Tony and taking all his money.
Also, did they have to take the Mysterium Armor away immediately? This is the down side of Marvel's every writer does whatever the heck they want and who cares what happened last run approach. Also, the chances this is going to mesh with the West Coast Avengers book... I'm thinking zero.
On the plus side, there was a back issue reference (for Justine Hammer's last appearance).
Conquest 2099 #2-3 : The whole set up with Silver Surfer and WolveNova and such? Mostly marketing.. this is really a Dracula book.. the 2099 regulars (really only Miguel and a couple of Orlando's X-People) are just wallpaper so far. It seems like some of the space characters seemingly created for the series might come into place next issue, but so far Surfer has just a quick fight with Dracula... Nova is just the narrator and Red Hulk the transportation. It's a pretty good story (Dracula and the vampires as good guys is pretty fun), but the bait and switch aspects are annoying.

Iron Man is one of those books I always want to like but very seldom do and this was one of those misses. I seriously think the last Iron Man story I really loved might have been Ultimate Comics : Armor Wars. Sure it was mostly a retread of the original, but it still managed to feel new and the characterization was great. It was by Ellis, so my perceptions are definitely colored now but still and all I can't really think of anything since then.
