Look what graced my mail slot this morning!
I've got to say, I ordered this strictly out of curiosity and a resounding love for the absurdity of the title, but this thing really delivered! Four stories of romance (three involving geekery) that each made me care while often laughing at the absurdity of the traditional genre trappings at the same time.
"I Put A Spell On You" really drew me in...until I saw the rest of the book and realized things were about to reach a whole new level.
"Funiculove" is breathtaking. Truly the stand-out work of the volume. It should be nominated for an Eisner or two. I'm not kidding.
"Cosplain" is just so much goddamn fun. Now I want to be War Nurse.
"Dark Dungeon of Forbidden Love" marks the return of a certain Scott Harris King to penciling, and BOY did I miss it. Fantastic panel and color arrangements too. It's a very simple plot, but it's sweet, and it's an absolute visual treat.
In all, these were each very successful and entertaining stories, and they also send strong but subtle messages about inclusivity that speak powerfully but are never forced nor allowed to derail even a single moment of the stories. I really respect that.
Truly my only feedback to the publisher is that, with such a fun anthology title concept, and with production and shipping being the largest costs in making these books, why not put out a double or even triple-sized issue next time around? I'm guessing it wouldn't double or triple the cost, meaning you could offer more value per dollar to your readers. I really really wanted more and was sad when I hit the back cover.
