Sorry to shift the topic, but do we have any update on the restoration of the old Classic Comics Christmas threads? I posted a long time back that, unfortunately, they are lost to the ages. I put out numerous pleas in the beginning for all members to back up as much of the board as they could. Only I and Aaron King actually ended up doing this. The computer Aaron put his files on was a work computer that got wiped. I used an automatic webpage backup system that, without my knowing this, only backed up the first three pages of threads that had been active for the past several days. I figured this out with only two days left before the CBR archives went offline and, believing that Aaron had the Classic Comics Christmas threads, went and manually backed up other threads I didn't want to lose. Thus, regrettably, NO ONE has them

Blast. I thought I understood everything until this post. Are you saying that if I want to pick X-Men #40, I have to have read the original comic, rather than read the story contained wherein!?! That... would change everything. Yes, if you want to pick X-Men #40, you would have to have read either the original comic, X-Men #88 (which reprints #40), or some other reprint in comic format. Each would be eligible. But if you've only encountered it in an Omnibus, Masterwork or Essential, you would not be able to use it. Interesting twist. Don't know that I'll get the same vicarious thrill from reading someone else's list if their rationale for loving a book isn't something I'd be able to experience myself by picking up a copy. That's always half the joy for me -- using others' experience to inform the direction that my reading/collecting takes next. If Scott Harris recommends a book because he and his brother did a crossword in it one Christmas when they were children, that isn't something I'd be able to relate to if I went out and picked up another copy of that book (or even the same one). "Recommendations" aren't the point, shax. We aren't just learning about comics in this survey, we're learning about our fellow posters. In the original CCC in '05, we heard some incredibly moving stories (and some hilarious ones) about each other's picks. I'm hoping to recapture that this year. And I assume that picking X-Men #40 because I have a nostalgic connection to it and because it's a kick-ass story is OK too, right? I mean, the quality of content can be be a legitimate rationale for picking said comic as well, yes? Of course. If we can only participate if we have an original copy of a comic book, well, that's going to heavily limit my participation in this. No, you don't have to own a copy. (Heck, half my list consists of books I no longer own.) You don't have to have ever owned a copy. If you read it at a friend's house in 3rd grade and it made a lifelong impression on you, that's good enough. You just can't have read in anything other than one of the comic formats. Small clarification needed... "I also PMed him and asked about 80/100 page giants, Marvel Special Editions, Annuals that are reprint collections and Treasury Editions and he said they were all acceptable too" Are those eligible AS single issues or only as a source for what was originally a single issue? Say, the first Treasury Edition from Marvel with Spider-Man. Does that count as one as a whole, or do I have to pick a story from it? The Spider-Man Treasury counts as a single issue. Cei-U! I summon the morning round-up!

Yeah, but a lot of my first comics were read in TPBs. Some of my most cherished stories are in TPBs. Or graphic novels. As long as the material matches the criteria, I would say you're okay. I don't own issues of Tales From the Crypt, but I have reprints up the ying-yang and am considering using one of the stories in an issue on my list. You aren't picking individual stories, you're picking an entire comic. Your reason for doing so doesn't have to have anything to do with its contents (though picking it because of its contents is, of course, perfectly acceptable). Cei-U! I summon the reiteration!

Thanks, Kurt. Hmmm...my number one is easy, proclaimed for years, but the rest...oh, my aching brain!

Thanks, Kurt. Hmmm...my number one is easy, proclaimed for years, but the rest...oh, my aching brain! This may sound strange but I don't know what my #1 comic is yet. Do you pick it because of the number of times you've read it or just the greatness of the story?

It holds a special place in my childhood AND it holds up to this day as a great story with wonderful artwork. It imprinted itself as my favorite early on and no other comic ever created that "magic feeling". I've read technically better, but nothing that hit my personal "hotspot" so well.

Thanks, Kurt. Hmmm...my number one is easy, proclaimed for years, but the rest...oh, my aching brain! :P My number one I have proclaimed for years is unfortunately under the rules a comic I have never read.

I realize I've spent most of my comic reading career picking up lots of things in trades. Almost all of my favorites: Usagi Yojimbo, Astro City, Swamp Thing, Sandman, V for Vendetta, Zot!, etc. etc. I've mostly only read in trade.
Which means I think this list will have to be child-Chris's favorite comics. I recall what those were and tended to read them in issues.

I'm surprised you haven't compiled a list of 500 favorite comics subdivided yearly.

I think I'll be giving this a skip this year. But I cannot wait to read everyone else's faves!

You've got two weeks to think about it, cw. Don't bail yet!

I just realized that my number one is a comic I haven't given thought to in years. This will take some explaining when I post it on the last day, but that's just crazy.

Just did some light editing on the original post, which will hopefully make the rules a tad clearer.
Cei-U! Check it out!

You've got two weeks to think about it, cw. Don't bail yet! Cei-U! I summon the reassurance! No, no, it's okay! If we're going by actual single books/floppies, some of my faves, I just do not have in that form. I can sit it out, get more reading of individual singles that I have, and maybe participate next year. Unless you want me to just pick from what singles I actually have and have read?
