Fixed that for you. Subby is great, Cooper. You will love those Tales to Astonish! I'm sure I will! Reading the Golden Age Sub-Mariner now and it's kooky fun! It is! It's kind of odd, too, though. There's one issue where he goes to kidnap Lynne Harris to force her to be his wife because it's what his mother wants, and he beats up everyone, and kidnaps her and her boyfriend, Luther Robinson, and somehow, he convinces them to help him fight the Nazis for the British. And they all become buddies. Only in comics. ^^^^That was also the first time I had ever seen Namor hit a woman who was not a villain/super-powered. I mean, she DID shoot at him with a gun, but still. hahahaha

GOLDEN Age Sub-Mariner is great. (I like the first All-Winners volume quite a bit.)
Silver Age Sub-Mariner is a humorless travesty. Bill Everett Sub-Mariner is the only true Sub-Mariner! (Except for the parts with Lady Dorma in them. She might be impetuous and kind of nuts, but at least she's not a milksop like a lot of the SA Marvel women.)

You probably appreciate Roy Thomas' Sub-Mariner then? Namor treated Dorma a lot better under his pen than he did under Stan's. But I disagree, I think Stan's Namor is hilarious. Don't make me post all those scans of Namor throwing absolutely hilarious temper tantrums and breaking his own toys. When Stan writes Namor with the FF, that is not my most favorite Namor, but TTA Namor is great.

I haven't read a lot of Roy's Sub-Mariner*, but I did like it. Kirby & STan basically made up a new character, but Roy cares SO MUCH about the Golden Age stuff, so his Subby was more true-to-Everett.
* I collect Marvel Masterworks, but my SA Silver Age Subby collection is woefully inadequate.

It's okay! When I left off reading SA Namor, Roy had JUST started writing him (HEAVILY edited by Stan, btw, as you'll see editor notes EVERYWHERE). I just know I love his Namor so much because I read the 90's series where he wrote Namor's golden age history again (kept it true to Everett, though). That series is what made the character my favorite.

Huh. I've never read that. (I'm not sure I've read anything Roy wrote for Marvel between 1980-2000.) What was the name of it?
Also not PURCHASED by I attempted to interlibrary loan:
"Fire and Water: A Biography of Bill Everett"
Also the first volume of "Rio" and "Comic Creators on the Fantastic Four."

Roy wrote for DC exclusively from 1981(launching "All Star Squadron", "Arak", and "Captain Carrot") to the end of 1988(winding down "Young All Stars"), with his next Marvel credit in '89(first issue of the second incarnation of "What If?")...which simplifies tracking down his Marvel stuff post-70s.

Oh, cool. I didn't know that exists - I've been on an Invaders kick lately and this is a nice addition. (Also: Holy crap it's 12 issues!) I will check the fifty cent boxes or try to inter-library loan again. If EVERYTHING else fails I will try to *shudder* buy at full price. (And I do like collected editions better, if they exist.) Pretty excited for Fire and Water. I like Blake Bell's stuff in general and Fantagraphics generally does a great job graphic design wise.

I have the single issues of the Saga of the Sub-Mariner, but I also have the trade I linked you to. I also have the single issues of The Saga of the Human Torch. So, if you'd like to, I can send you the trade if you are interested in reading it.

I'm going to comic con (7 dudes with longboxes in poorly fitting t-shirts in the basement of a Ramada type con, not San Diego type con) in a few weeks. If I strike out there I will absolutely take you up on this. Thanks! (It probably costs, like, 4-5 bucks to send! That is a lot of money!)

Invaders is awesome.. I have the two trade collections (Which cover the whole series). I have to get that 2000-ish mini they did at some point.
The recent James Robinson revival was pretty good, too.

I have never been to a con before, but I tell you what, I've been to 25 cent box days, and that can get just about as crowded and ridiculous as I'd like to get. I don't know what would happen if I ever made it to an actual con. I'd probably get eaten.
