Another Jim and Dan Comic & Toy Show in the books. This was held in the student center of a local university, one of the bigger small shows in the area that runs 4 times a year. Lots of vendors with $3 Bronze, $5 Silver, $1 comics, 3/$1 boxes, $5 trades, plus lots and lots of wall books, some toy vendors, some local and small profile big company creators who live locally all had tables there.
I had a small budget since I've been out of work for 3 months, but had a little walk around money available leftover birthday money and such, so picked up a few things on my want list and a few impulse buys.
Before I went to the show, my wife and I went out to breakfast and stopped at a Target near the convention center where we picked up our first impulse buys of the day...
a plushie Banta with Tusken Raider mounted, and a talking Stormtrooper plushie from their clearance aisle.
My first objective at the show was to pick up the second issue of Prowl by Adam Fields, a local artist who self-publishes, who I have some art and commissions from...
Issue 2 came out in May, this was my first chance to pick it up. #3 is in the can and headed to the printer, should be out next month and I got a preview of the cover and some layouts for #4 he had with him today.
Can't go to a show without picking up fliers for upcoming shows and dealers, the Space flier had a free program formthe 207 show attached so I can see what I missed. Space (Small Press and Alternate Comics Expo) is held in Columbus and showcases creators working outside the purview of Diamond's distribution network and gatekeeping. Some have more mainstream credits too, but the focus in on small press and self-publishers.
The I started hunting down some Savage Sword of Conan, Heavy Metal and Epic Illustrated issues I needed. I struck out on the Heavy Metals in the years Iw as looking for (there were a lot from '77-'79 and post '85, but nothing form '81 and '82 the years I am trying to fill in) but got 4 Savage Sword issues and 2 Epic Illustrated issues I needed. The SSoC #40 was a dollar bin score, the rest were between $4 and $8, one Epic was $4 the other $10 (but was marked $16, he gave me a deal because I was buying other stuff from him).
Then I started bargain hunting.
One of the local store owners I know had some 3/$1 bins and $5 trades and I picked up a bunch of stuff from him...
some 3/$1 anthology issues...
some 3/$1 Elric issues finishing off all the Pacific and First Comic Elric series for me (I still need some issues of the Topps/DH Stormbringer series)
and a bunch of 3/$1 DNAgents issues (finished the 2nd series and now only need the final issue of the first series to complete both)
and a couple of issues of the Arrden 2008 Flash Gordon series I hadn't seen before from the 3/$1 bins...
and then some $5 trades...
Saga Vol. 6, the Paul Grist Kane trade and Mice Templar Legends Vol. 1 came form the same dealer who had the 3/$1 books, Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 by Jeff Lemire from a different dealer.
the deal of the day came from the dealer I got the 3/$1 books from, the Private Eye trade collecting Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin's pay as you go web series in print, normally retails at $49.99, it was only $10 for a gorgeous hardcover
I picked up a couple impulse purchase toys too
the Dale Arden figure from the 90s animated series MOC for $4
and a trio of JSA figurines that were $5 a pop
GA WW, Dr. Fate and the Spectre.
I also picked up a pair of pins form the owner of the shop I most often frequent (Super Fly0 for a buck each, a Cap shield and Hydra emblem...
all in all a good show. Reconnected with some folks I hadn't seen in a few months, talked to a few dealers about moving Amy's X-Men collection and other sundry books, got a few people to keep an eye out for a Drulliet Elric for me, and got some cool new stuff.
