Picked these up at a local store in Queens By the way, I read #16-22 and they were among the best books I've read this year.

Today was Sunday Funday. My wife started her vacation yesterday, and one of my dealer acquaintances (Dan of Jim & Dan's who run the quarterly con I frequently attend) was having a sale at his shop this weekend, a shop on the other side of Dayton almost to the Indiana line, which I hadn't been to before, but I had been promising him I'd make it out there at some point. It was a gorgeous day, so I loaded up some of the books I am culling to see about working a trade, and we headed out for the hour plus drive. We made a couple other stops, including the Half Price Books and Toys R Us, and then headed out to the shop which opened at 1. We got there a little before 1, but just down the street from the shop was a barbecue restaurant (Buckeye Jake's) inside a converted 18th century house, so we stopped there for lunch and I tired their brisket, which was awesome, and Amy had their Sunday chicken special and their homemade peanut butter pie. So with a full belly we headed over to the shop. Worked out a trade for some store credit and picked up a bunch of goodies. On the way out, Dan recommended a little used bookstore that also deals in some comics in the next town over, so we hit that as well before coming home. Came back with a decent haul of stuff too... Amy saw a battered Black Widow action figure she liked and it was cheap so we snagged it, and the first thing I pulled out of the mag box was the 80;s Black Widow OGN withthe same costume, which she decided she wanted to read, so that was her first pick up... she also spotted the metal Doctor Strange figure and so that was part of the haul too... First thing I spotted when I walked in was this on the wall... The Kirby-Lee Surfer OGN I had been looking for for a while, and it was going home with me. I was asking Dan if he ever got a copy of Wrightson's Frankenstein, if he would let me know, he said sure if he gets two, as he is wanting one for himself too, but he asked me if I had a copy of Creepshow, which I didn't and now I do...along with a copy of the Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta Starstruk OGN published under the Epic imprint. The main reson I wanted to get to his shop was he said he had a good selection of Savage Sword issues, and he did, but only had 1 of the 4 I needed, but he did have a copy of the Moench/Gulacy Conan OGN The Skull of Set... rooting around the magazine bins also turned up that Black Widow OGN and the Starstruck, plus these two lovelies... now down to 3 or 4 issues of Epic Illustrated to complete the run. I had a few dollars in credit left, so I rooted through the dollar bins and came away with these 3 books... the one issue of Atlas' Cougar I needed, the Atari Force Special and the Gold Key adaptation of the Black Hole. Not pictured, I also picked up the last issue of Future Quest (#12) that I had missed while recovering from surgery. Toys R' Us was a bust (no blue Kimono Usagi figure) but between Half Price Books and Readers Delight (the little shop Dan sent me too), I picked up the following... Books 3 and 4 of the Dune Cycle and a Six Million Dollar Man novel, and these two trades... Joe Kubert's Dong Xoia, Vietnam 1965 and the first volume of Kieron Gillen's Wicked & Divine (yes I know it's a new book, but it was part of the haul and the pic). So, all in all, Sunday Funday was a success, and a good time was had by all. -M

Congrats on the Surfer pickup! I also am looking for that (and a Wrightson Frankenstein). Perhaps I can beat ya to it

Picked these up at a local store in Queens By the way, I read #16-22 and they were among the best books I've read this year. I started reading the latest Astro City series about issue #37 (though I missed one or two) and I recently started reaching back and getting some of the issues from the early 30s. I have the whole Steeljack arc and the whole Jack in the Box arc. And since this week is a fifth Wednesday, none of my regular comics come out, so I will probably pick up two or three more issues from the series.

I have to admit, I got bored with some of the Astro city narrative, but issue 17-21 was awesome. Some of the best that I read this year.

Not so much a purchase as a potential purchase...JLA/Avengers...There is an auction on our local version of ebay, 1-4 for $35 nz($25 US give or take) which I thought was a bit steep, but looking at Amazon you cant get the trade or hardcover for less than US$95. So is the auction worth it for a supposed NM set?

I love that Mini. I bought the omnibus for around 60 dollars a few years back.

Yesterday I pick up this silly little thing: It's moving to discover the Marvel team in the eighties. Perhaps they were working hard, but they were also able to have some fun. Not sure it's the same atmosphere nowadays.

I thought the JLA/Avengers mini was massively overrated. Not bad per se, because it was enjoyable enough, but it lacked in the story department. Really, your level of interest in seeing Superman face off against Thor or similar will have a big bearing on how much you enjoy the mini-series. Myself, I find big superhero fights a bit boring, so I was probably hoping for a bit more meat to the tale in order to hold my interest. Some of the dialogue is excruciating as well. Definitely not Kurt Buseik's finest moment.

Those Are fair statements regarding JLA/ AVENGERS, But it was a guilty pleasure. The story is always going to be weak whenever you pit good guys against good guys.

With that many characters involved I think it was never going to be a story heavy series. Even so I thought it had some well done moments besides the fights, like Barry and Hal, both dead at the time, interacting with the other characters and all that.

So much win!!! Great haul, mrp!!! The Skull of Set and the Silver Surfer GN are pretty hard to find at decent prices. That SSoC issue is amazing. One of my favourite non-Thomas ones, as well as one of my favourites, period! The artwork is amazing (and I think it was the first time Tim Truman did a Conan story). Gary Kwapisz really outdid himself too, almost going into Philippe Druillet, Jean-Pierre Gal or H.R. Giger territory.

I really enjoyed the JLA/Avengers mini-series. I thought it gave a nice look at the characters and differences between the teams and the universes. And the art is fantastic.
It's my understanding that Kurt had to scrap part of his plot mid-way through the series because of something happening on the editorial level - I don't recall the details, but my hazy memory says things in issues 3 and 4 were originally supposed to be something different but he was forced to change the plot on the fly.

Definitely not Kurt Buseik's finest moment. I always found it a chore to slog through like a lot of event books(I have it digitally) but its a book Id like to have on paper. However at these prtices that aint gonna happen, and for $35 Id rather have a collection than the singles, tho they would be easier to read...and store...hmmmm
