Was able to get a copy of the Beyond Mars strip reprint by Jack Williamson and Lee Elias for a total of just over $7. Looking forward to it arriving.

And I just downloaded a copy of Frankenstein: The Mad Science of Dick Briefer. $3.99 in the Amazon Kindle store. I'll still look for a cheap copy of the hardcover, but the price was too good to pass up. It covers issues 1-7 of Briefer's Frankenstein comic.

With Amy being on vacation this week, today was a continuation of Sunday Funday: The Thursday Edition. We were headed down to Dayton to go to one of her favorite pizzerias for lunch, which is next door to one of the better comic & game shops in the Dayton area. Bell, Book & Comics and not too far from another great shop: Maverick's. I had talked to Pete Bell, owner of Bell, Book, about trading in some vintage gaming mags (Dragon and Dungeon) and some vintage gaming supplements for some store credit when I saw him at the Jim & Dan show, so armed with a few bags of old gaming stuff we made the drive down, traded in the stuff, got some cool stuff, had great pizza, and found a local bakery that was having a special on pie so Amy indulged and got a slice of coconut cream, a slice of Lemon Chess, and a slice of Pecan to bring home for later. At Bell, Book, Amy and I split the credit and she splurged on some new gaming minis and a coloring book based on one of our favorite web comics, Order of the Stick... I went to work trying to find some interesting stuff. I knocked off two more issues of Savage Sword, leaving 2 to go to complete the series... I did find the one issue of Heavy Metal I needed to complete 1977-1981, unfortunately it was a coverless copy, but for 50 cents I picked it up until I can find a complete copy. I also got 2 other HM issues, one from '82 one from '83 as I start chipping away at those years... I can at least read all of Steranko's Outland now. He had some clearance trades and hardcovers going for $5 each, I picked up Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese: The Ethiopian... and a coffee table art book of Star Wars featuring the storyboard art for the prequel trilogy (not a big fan of the prequels, but I love storyboard art, and it was $5) Found some classic heroes too... a half dozen issues of the Gold Key/Whitman Buck Rogers series, all priced between 50 cents and $2... a King Reader issue featuring the Phantom and Mandrake, and a pair of Flash Gordon issues for a buck each... a pile of DC Tarzans and 1 of the 2 issues of the Marvel run I needed, all ranging form 50 cents to $4 for the 100 page giant issue I also filled in most of the Marvel Battlestar Galactica run I needed, many featuring Walt Simonson art, all for 50 cents or a $1... and a trio of Kamandi issues... (50 cents, $1 and $2) I also found a copy of the Dc Science Fiction graphic novel with Marshall Rogers adapting Harlan Ellison's Demon with the Glass Hand for $3.05 (Pete likes weird price points) and to round things out at Bell Book I picked up a 50 cent copy of the Marvel Super Special adapting Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and an issue of Alter Ego focused on the Silver & Bronze era JLA with an Alex Ross cover. Over at Marverick's I didn't get a lot. I had picked up the first volume of Sweet Tooth out of their $5 trade box at the Jim and Dan show a few weeks ago, and they still had volumes 2-6 (i.e. the rest of the series) in their $5 trade boxes, so I snagged those... but they didn't have any of the Savage Sword or Heavy Metal issues I was looking for. I was tempted by the McFarlane Conan action figures they had, but passed for now. They also didn't have any Micronaut toys this time around (they sold their last pieces a week ago), but he did promise to give me a heads up if any come in, so that's a plus out of the visit, as it' good to have folks looking out for stuff for you. So not a bad haul, especially since only the Sweet Tooth volumes cost anything out of pocket. I've got one or two more comic related trips/events this weekend (sat is the 10th anniversary sale at my LCS with several creators doing signings and a live band performing, and Half Price Books is having their 20% off Labor Day Sale all weekend and is only a short drive form my lcs), but these will be out of pocket sprees, so much more limited. -M

Well, as long you got SOME Kamandi, it wasn't a total waste of time.

Just got back from Super Fly's 10th Anniversary Event and 50% off sale. Picked up some newer stuff & some small press stuff (look in the modern comics thread, I'll post about it there), but did get a few classic collections... Finally broke down and crossed the manga line beyond Lone Wolf & Cub (the only manga I have really read up to this point) and picked up the first volume of Akira... and Vol. 4, 6 and 7 of Usagi from Fantagraphics... I still need vol 3 and 5 of the Fantagraphics volumes, and a bunch of the Saga editions, but I am getting there... Didn't really buy any back issues, just small press stuff and trades today (plus 1 new release comics). -M

So our annual Labor Day trek to Columbus to tour the Half Price Books locations there during their 20% off sale was this weekend. Traded ina bunch of paperbacks and such and came away with some classic and modern goodies. Modern stuff over in the modern comics forum, classic stuff here. What I didn't get because even with the 20% off they were still over priced-6 or 7 Blueberry volumes averaging $40-$50 per volume for the Epic stuff and a few others, and Essential Thor volume 4 for $50. I know it's out of print and in demand, but I can't bring myself to pay $50 for an Essential volume. I almost broke down and got the Blueberry stuff, and if it hadn't been for these first 4 items I might have... So the first find in the art book section, not the comics section were 4 of the Legend of Arzach Gallery Portfolios (there were 6 in total, I found vol. 3-6) produced by Tundra in the 90s. . I had never seen these in the wild before. The envelope/folders ar ea little beat up but the prints/plates inside are all in gorgeous shape. #6 has a NSFW cover and is behind spoilers... Vol. 3 Vol. 4 Vol. 5 Vol. 6 then I raided the dollar bins and found a huge lot of the 2002 Catwoman series, a snagged the early Darwyn Cooke issues and the run of Adam Hughes covers, all for $1 each (minus off course the 20% discount). #51 on top there fetches between $40 and $50 in high grade raw regularly in Lonestar auctions and a few others go for near that. I had wanted to read this run but wasn't paying those prices, but for a buck a pop, I bit, and if I am disappointed by them I can flip them and get back what I paid for them easily. I also snagged a bunch of EC reprints form Gladstone out of the dollar bins... and no comic haul is complete without some Eisner and Kubert... also picked up some classic stuff in trades... the second volume of Hellblazer and the third volume of Strangehaven. That volume of SH had eluded me for a decade. I had been picking up single issues after discovering the first 2 trades of the series but couldn't find the new issues when I moved out to Ohio from CT, and couldn't track down a copy of the trade out here when it was released. I had found the last 4 single issues in that trade a year or so ago to finish reading it, but since I had vol. 1 & 2 n trade, I preferred having the trade, now I do (single issues now up for gabs ) I also ran across two Oz OGNs by Eric Shanower I did not have- 1 form First, 1 form Dark Horse... and the Rio Rides Again OGN by Doug Wildley from Marvel, I've been a fan of Wildley's stuff since I first discovered Jonny Quest as a kid... and last but certainly not least...Voodoo Child: The Illustrated Legends of Jimi Hendrix with gorgeous Sienkewicz art and the (at the time) unreleased Hendrix tracks on a CD included with the OGN... Combined with the newer stuff I got, it was a good haul for the day, but it would have been better if my budget would have allowed me to snag the Blueberry volumes (I did message one of my dealer friends who I knew was looking for those volumes for his personal collection and gave him the heads up about them so maybe I will see them again sometime and get to read them). -M edit to add: I think am done for a while. Unless i make it to Cartoon Crossroads Columbus at the end of this month, my next planned comics excursion is Champion City Comic Con (C4) at the end of October, and I don't foresee making any major purchases before then. But things can change.

What is that Métal Hurlant, that looks like it's in english? Just a straight translation of a French issue?

What is that Métal Hurlant, that looks like it's in english? Just a straight translation of a French issue? No in 2002 Humanoids began producing a new version of Metal Hurlant geared toward the American market. Much of the material was original though some was not. American writers such as Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns had stories in the first handful of issues. It ran 14 issues and the last handful were distributed through DC who had cut a deal with Humanoids to produce some editions of the Jodo and Moebius stuff. I got the first 4-6 issues when they came out before I moved out to Ohio and none of the shops here had copies available, so I never got the rest, so I pick them up when I see them in the wild-such as that one. Humanoids put out a line of stuff geared to the American market. They did the Incal prequel series, a series called Negative Exposure and some others as well as the Metal Hurlant anthology. They were also putting out a Metabarons title and the European album sized editions of things like Techno-priests and a few others in English translation. They did not fare well in the market, hence the deal with DC, but they came back a few years ago releasing some collected editions but not floppies for the American audience. Here's a link to the series page for that Metal Hurlant series on the GCD where you can get more info. -M

I knew about the metabarons and Iincal translation, but didn't know for Metal Hurlant! I'll keep an eye open to find them. Thanks a lot for all the information! EDIT : I'm really surprised that they kept the French title. Was Métal Hurlant well known in the USA, enough to want to keep the title and interest people? I wouldn't think so. Other Question : I always thought that Métal Hurlant and Heavy Metal were linked, am I wrong to think that? What is that Métal Hurlant, that looks like it's in english? Heavy Metal started as an American version of Metal Hurlant providing English translations of material for an American audience. Les Assocites Humanoids worked with National Lampoon to launch the mag in America. Heavy Metal itself has been sold (more than once I believe) once by a group led by Kevin Eastman of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame, who remains as Publisher, but I believe he sold the holding company itslef a few years back, so it is no longer a part of Humanoids and hasn't been for some time. -M
