I don't know what it is, but digital coloring of older comics just sometimes looks a bit off (like Dark Horse's reprints of Marvel-Era Conan) or eye glaringly bright. Thankfully, they've chosen some subdued hues that look almost exactly like the original colors I didn't know the Howard omnibus was recolored. I see in the front it credits "color restoration" but what exactly does that mean? On the same subject I have mixed feelings about the Thor omnibus. The new coloring generally looks "nice" but sometimes it seems too much (does everything have to have a gradient?) Happy to have the collection but the purist in me wishes they'd stuck with the original coloring. I think the publishers are starting to get the hang of it. In early reprints, if they used the same formulas as the original printings, the better paper and printing made everything too bright. Recolors, sometimes they tried to "improve" things, even though the art was made for flat color. When I saw Ed Piskor (Hip Hop Family Tree), he said that to color the book, he found large patches of different colors in old Marvel books, and scanned and tiled those to use to color the book. That way, he could get the same colors and "feel" with current technology.

And on a weird note, while I do love the fresh smell of the HTD Omnibus' paper, I think I still prefer the potent aroma of old newspulp like my Cap comics have That is not weird. The smell is 5% of the reason I collect (60% artwork and 35% story). If they can make scented pine sticks to put in Christmas trees, perhaps someone needs to invent a classic comic scented book mark for ombnibuses? I may have to go on Shark Tank with that one...

I have been planning on getting Detective Comics #359 pretty soon, but I was going to wait until January. But I saw a beat-up (but not TOO beat-up) copy on eBay, on sale for a bit more than I had been planning on paying. (I won't say how much because it might give some of the forum members a heart attack; it's the most I've ever paid for a comic book by almost $100.) I have been checking it out on eBay and assessing the cheapest price I can pay for it and still get something that's a little better than a reading copy. And this copy, while more expensive, is quite a bit better than a reading copy! Well, I collect Detective Comics. And I have every issue from #360 to the present and I'm only missing seven issues from #301 to #359, so I have to face this expenditure sooner or later. It's a CGC copy. I've never owned a CGC copy before. But I have the Millennium edition of Detective #359, so I can read the stories - again! - any time I want without breaking the seal. (The Batgirl story has Killer Moth and Carmine Infantino art. The Elongated Man story has Murphy Anderson art and Sue is rocking her maharani costume an the way to a masquerade.) But I'll probably break the seal anyway within hours. I also ordered this:

I got an unexpected Christmas bonus and decided to spend a portion of it on comic books. I found a beat-up (but not too beat-up!) copy of Detective #335. I was thinking it looked like one of the silliest "New Look" covers I'd ever seen ... until I remembered other "New Look" covers. Many other "New Look" covers. And I also got a very beat-up copy of Batman Annual #7 for a dollar! It has a bunch of reprints that I've read in Batman trade paperbacks that I checked out of the library, but there's a bunch of these that I've never owned in reprint form, so even though some of these are GREAT! - such as "Batwoman's Publicity Agent" - I've only read them once or maybe twice. So I'm looking forward to having some of these classics in a readily available form.

My wife wanted to go to IHOP for their all you can eat pancakes special and there's one right near the Half Price Books we frequent, so I stopped there after breakfast today and picked up a couple of things using my January coupon from their calendar I got last month. I picked up volume 1 of the Checkers edition of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, so I now have all seven volumes... I also picked up the second volumes of the Silver Age Green Lantern and the fourth volume of Ed Brubaker's Criminal, filling in the one hole I had in that series... Amy also picked up a Wonder Woman coloring book while we were there... we stopped a couple more places and got comic related goodies (check out the toy thread) but that was it for comics/trades... -M

Just yesterday while I was out of town for two days, I went to the usual comic book shoip and only bought one old back issue of an old comic book series.
I bought the last issue of X-Men 2099 which I think X-Men 2099 is the most underrated 2099 comic book series ever along with Ghost Rider 2099.
These days I still have a hard time trying to remember the names of the X-Men 2099 characters lol except for Junkpile and the winged character Bloodhawk I think his name. That and that one dude with the skull facepaint where he kind of resembles Gambit kind of

So someone here mentioned that Ollies was blowing out Showcase volumes and then I saw on Bleeding Cool they had bought in 19 truckloads of DC trades and hardcovers including omnibus and were on sale from $1.99 to $12.99, so I had to go to the Ollie's in town to check it out...big mistake for my wallet. I ended up dropping just under $200 and came home with this haul... I haven't even started going through sorting out what I brought home, but there were several hardcovers, a couple omnibus, several Showcase volumes and a bunch of trades. All DC except for the oversized Someday Funnies volume which I think someone ( Rob Allen?) mentioned here in a thread on undergrounds or some such. -M
