I saw Detective Comics #328 being auctioned on eBay and I put a bid on it and got it for $21.50. The auction was a few hours away from being over so it was very nice to just put in my bid and then go to work and I checked when I got home and I had won. Much better than bidding and then waiting four or five days or more and then NOT GETTING IT! It's listed as a solid VG. I think that's a good price. This is the second New Look issue of Detective Comics with "Gotham Gang Line-Up!" and the death of Alfred, so it's technically the beginning of The Outsider Saga. Also, wonderfully awkward art by Sheldon Moldoff! And ... the first appearance of Aunt Harriet! I also bid on a Detective #347 but it was a little more beat-up so I didn't bid very high. The winning bid was just fifty cents over my high bid. So just four more issues and I'll have every issue from #301 to the present!

I'm working my way through the Elfquest omnibus series, almost done with #3 (The Hidden Years, with a mix of Pini and non-Pini stories). I'm surprised there's not a dedicated thread about this series. It's one of the best known and longest running creator-owned series, and clearly Claremont was a fan in the 80s, given the references and homages to it that showed up in his X-Men run.

I might start with something less difficult... has anyone done a review thread for Kurt Busiek's Astro City?

It was started in the very early days of the list, by a member who no longer participates and abandoned before it got very far. If I can find it, I will add a link in to this post. -M edit to add: hmmmm, I can't seen to find it, and the member who I thought was doing it back then has no posts to their credit, so they may have deleted it. -M

I don't think there's anything wrong with starting a thread that was abandoned by a former member. It's from your pov after all.

I don't think there's anything wrong with starting a thread that was abandoned by a former member. It's from your pov after all. I agree, but I'd also say that not fully understanding the mythological aspects of Elfquest shouldn't put rberman off from reviewing the series. It's ok to not be an expert. It's ok to say, "I don't know" in a review. Chances are, others will know and they'll be happy to chime in. That kind of interaction with regular readers is essential for a review thread, I think.

I think 2 different people have continued the Micronauts review thread I started, so there's precedent for someone taking over a review thread someone else started. -M

Not much a Marvel guy, but that Amazing Fantasy series by Busiek was awesome.

I was in Los Angeles for a couple of days. The friend I stayed with lives close to a comic-book shop (Earth-2 in Northridge) so it was easy to stop by on Wednesday to get my new comics this week (Wonder Woman, Detective and Batgirl), and I also picked up the following for bargain prices. Detective Comics #330 for $5. It's a bit beat-up, but it's a lot better than a mere reading copy! Cover detached at lower staple and a couple of weird dime-sized holes through a page in the Batman story. But it's not smelly or crumbling or terribly bent at the corners. Metal Men #23 for $3. VG copy with no major defects of any kind. The story is TOTALLY NUTS as there's a NEW female robot called the Sizzler who talks by saying "ZZZ-ZZZ!" or "ZZZZ-ZZZZZ!!!" when she's really excited or something or getting all weird and catty with Platinum. The Sizzler has turned Doc Magnus into a robot and Tina is in "hysterical jealous female" mode because robot Magnus is spending too much time with the Sizzler Well worth THREE DOLLARS!! Essential Captain America #4 for $5. This reprints Captain America #157 to #186, which includes all the issues of Cap I haven't read from Tales of Suspense #59 to about Captain America #230. For only $5! I've read a few scatted issues here and there, but nothing from #170 to #183. So I've never read the Secret Empire or any of the earliest issues when Falcon could fly or when Cap was Nomad! I'm really looking forward to it!

Just bought these off of eBay, listed as VF+/NM... Action Comics #426, 428, 429, 434, 438 (1973/74) (LOT $39.95) Superman #303 (1976) ($4.99) I really wasn't looking to purchase any Superman related comics but couldn't pass up these 6 for the condition and price. I was immediately drawn to that cover with Superman in the Dentists chair...CLASSIC! Also, these are all drawn by Curt Swan, so definitely a plus!

Ok, I am back! Just made another purchase from eBay...Action Comics #448, 450-457 (1975/76) stated to be in high grade (VF+ 8.5 or better) (LOT $64.99) Not a bad deal considering I paid around $7.22 per issue + the extra cost of $6.66 shipping. I am getting addicted to these silly Superman covers! The hamburger one cracks me up, also really like the one where Supes is in the elevator and frightened to get off on the 13th floor!! The cover with the child in bed looks as if he is about to get sexually assaulted by Supes!! Again, Curt Swan is the artist on all of these comics!
