That JSA Solomon Grundy story is one of my very favorite Golden Age stories. And certainly my favorite JSA story EVER! I'm reading it right now and really enjoying it - Would be nice if it weren't quite so smelly though. Also got Super-Team Family 7 which reprints a Haney/Cardy Teen Titans story and the first Doom Patrol Brotherhood of Evil tale.

That issue of Super-Team Family (#4) brings back some fond childhood memories. That was early in my comic-reading days, I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time. It was the first Golden Age story I read; I remember liking the World's Finest story in the second half of the book as well.

It was the first Golden Age story I read; I remember liking the World's Finest story in the second half of the book as well. I was about 12 when I got this brand-new off a spinner rack when I was spending the weekend with my great-grandmother. It was not quite the first Golden Age story I read because I had seen some very old Batman stories and I remember a friend of mine had the Famous First Edition of All-Star #3. As for that World's Finest story - I hated it so much! I don't really remember why. I think I mostly hated the idea that Batman and Superman were "pals" and were practically joined at the hip. When I was young, the whole idea of World's Finest made me kind of nauseous. I got over that eventually and have learned to love World's Finest. Anyway, I had that issue of Super-Team Family for YEARS (I still have it) and read the JSA story over and over. But it's only been within the last four or five years that I read that World's Finest story again - it's actually kind of cool, especially that Dick Sprang art!

Driving around to Michigan based comic and media stores. Gil Kane and Joe Kubert covers. The oldest Brave and the Bold I own, 3 dollars. I'm not a good enough photographer to convey the extent of the water damage. A coverless Superboy # 43 for 3 dollars. One of a pile of Lois Lane's because I guess I collect Lois Lane now? And Wanted: The World's Most Dangerous Villains, my favorite DC reprint book. An INCREDIBLY RARE FIND! I count this series (Casper And...) and (Richie Rich And...) as team-up books for my purposes. They were produced during the waning days of Harvey and this is the first one I have ever *EVER* found in the wild. (Not from the internet.) Yay!

Also - This was in with the Treasury-size comics, althoughh slightly smaller. It was 10 bucks. I decided I was 10 bucks worth of curious.... I was hoping for an early underground thing, but it wasn't comics, exactly. It is one panel, softcore sexual cartoons (lots 'o bare boobs) - about 5 to a page - interspersed with jokes. "No lover, I can't stay all night! I highly respect my marriage!" "Men never whistle at Sophie, our sexy secretary... how can you whistle with your tongue hanging out!" Bill Ward was one artist. The whole thing is amazingly, spectacularly unfunny. Like, the cover is one of the funniest things and you see how not funny the cover. It is so unfunny it is kind of endearing, like "Aww. Look at them try." I dunno... it is a unique part of my collection. It is an element of it's time. Ah, hell. Probably worth my ten bucks, just for being something I would never imagine would exist. I assume this is a pun on "Six to sixty" which might have been an advertising slogan? "Sexty" isn't a word so the joke doesn't really work, but you have to give them credit for trying....

Not sure if I have the Katy Keene or Shazam guides, but I'll sell the dups if I do.

I've been bidding on Detective Comics #347 for a few weeks, trying to see if I can luck out and get a nice mid-range copy for a bargain bid, but NO LUCK! But I went ahead and purchsed a copy that looks pretty nice overall, but the cover isn't attached at the lower staple, so it cost $16.50. So that's the last issue of Detective I need to have every issue from #301 to the present! I also bid on #275, the Zebra-Batman issue, and I'll know if I got that one on a few hours. Probably not. I'm not bidding any higher and I'm sure I will be outbid.

These are the covers that forced/enticed people to buy comics in those oh so classic of days!

I've probably read it before because I read all the Showcase Batman volumes from the library, but in that format, reading two or three every night before going to bed, they kind of all run together. The Elongated Man story, on the other hand, is - for me - the very last Elongated Man story from Detective Comics that I haven't read. I can't wait to see the latest bananashenanigans of Ralph and Sue. They'll be in ... some place called something like Mountain City! And Ralph's nose will twitch because ... all the birds in the city have turned plaid! And Sue will either go shopping or have her hair done.

Bought some Silver Age Thor of a friend of mine. #133 and #151 were the highlights, along with a few others. He also helped me complete the first Ragman series! Pics at a later time.

We were running into Columbus today for a few errands, and stopped at a couple of Half PRice Books to use out 50% off coupons, and while there we stopped in to a comic shop there (Packrat Comics) that was having a sale on all non-wall books (most were $1). I didn't have a lot of time to sort through boxes, but I found a few things. At Half Price I picked up some classic Kubert... the hardcover collection of Kubert's Tex (with a 50% off coupon)... and Abraham Stone (from the Marvel/Epic imprint) out of the dollar bin... also picked up a little more modern stuff form Brubaker & Rucka... Vol. 1 & 2 of Gotham Central (I had Vol. 3 & 4 already) and Vol. 4 of Criminal... also fished a bunch of JSA related material out of the dollar bins... most of the Return of the JSA one shots and a handful of issues of JSA All Stars. I also picked up the last 2 issues of Countdown to Mystery featuring Dr. Fate I needed, 2 issues of the Kamandi Challenge and 1 issue of the Death of Hawkman. Over at Packrat, I picked up the following: Warren Ellis' Stranger Kisses trade ($5) which gives me all 3 volumes of the Strange trilogy he did an issue of the Frazetta cover Conan series DH did... the Jezebel Jade mini... a pile of issues of the Legends of the DC Universe series... plus a handful of other things (Ka-Zar the Savage #30, the last issue of Kirby's Satan Six from Topps I needed, Justice Society of America #8 (last issue of the 1991 8 issue mini I needed) off my want list. They however did not have any copies of Frankenstein Alive, Alive #4 left, which is what I went in looking for (only to find the sale). -M

At this weekend's NC Comic Con, I bought this lot of issues, most of which were around $2 a piece and in fairly decent reading condition:
Thanks to Hoosier's reviews, CAPT SAVAGE #4. (I did see a copy of #1 which looked to be in rather fine condition but it was priced around 20-30 bucks I think. Too rich at the moment).
SGT FURY #39 JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #100 JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #160 JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #200 EXCALIBUR MOJO MAYHEM one-shot THOR #250 (The Mangog!) CAPTAIN MARVEL #46 CONAN THE BARBARIAN #58 (Belit arrives) CLAW THE UNCONQUERED #1
My only regret was, I found a dealer who had quite a bunch of war titles like Rock, GI Combat, Our Men at War and such. I was starting to look through them when my brother distracted me to show me something that he had found elsewhere and I forgot to go back. Argh! Next time I'll remember!

I got it! I raised my bid a bit at the last minute - literally! I checked on the auction to see if it was over and there was 53 seconds to go! So I upped my bid with 7 seconds to go ... and there was yet another attempt to outbid me in those last 7 seconds but it wasn't high enough. I had started at $17 and ended up getting it for $24.50. The description says it's a 3.5, and if so, it's a pretty good price. So ... I got the Zebra Batman issue! One of my favorite "weird transformation" stories from the late Schiff era. (It's not that great a story, but every panel with Zebra Batman is SILVER AGE GOLD!)
