While I was at my lcs, I picked up Birds of Prey Vol. 3, since I had gotten Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 on the cheap at Ollie's.

They are a discount/odd lot/salvage retail chain, and last Christmas they bought all the excess stock when DC liquidated their NY warehouse after the move to Burbank, and did well blowing out the trade cheap, so they have gone after other volume buys of that ilk. Earlier in 2018, they bought out all of Loot Crate's overstock on genre/geek t-shirts and blew them out, they bought up a huge portion of Toys R Us merchandise stock when they went out, and I believe they bought a large chunk of the trades Diamond put on liquidation at the end of the year (like they always do but it is only available to retailers who usually try to sell it for full MSRP not at a discount to maximize their margin). They buy in bulk, usually at pennies on the dollar for MSRP, and turn around and sell cheap to their customers. Their store motto is "Good Stuff, Cheap" and they do a decent job of living up to it. It's a national chain, per se, but there are some regions they don;t have a presence in. -M addendum Here's the website for Ollie's, there's a store locator on the site to see where your nearest Ollie's might be. So I made it out today... was short of time, but very cool that a discount store has a little book shop within! I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to browse, but I got some great stuff The Fifth Beatle (in oversized HC for $9.99) Suicide Squad Silver Age omnibus (also 9.99) the a bunch of regular trades for $4-$5 each: 2 Greg Pak Action Comics volumes Skull the Slayer (which I had no idea had a Trade) 2 New 52 Earth 2 volumes Whiteout (by Greg Rucka) I'll definitely be going back periodically!

I'm glad they fit in with your collection and found a home! I don't think I ever saw that Lancer Daredevil before by the way, interesting to see it! The paperback format works better for Peanuts and Mad than Marvel comics for me, even with digests the lettering gets too small sometimes if they haven't resized it (and then they do that at the expense of the art), so I'll probably never get into paperback format comics myself even if it did expose me to Ditko Spider-Man first. I have the Avengers novel and did have some others once however and liked them.

Passed on buying a copy the first time I came across one. Wasn't going to repeat that mistake.

Ordered a copy of Gold Key's Captain Nice #1-and-only from Lone Star yesterday. The plan is to take it with me to the Emerald City Con and have star William Daniels autograph it. Hopefully he's not one of those celebrity asshats charging $50 a pop for a signature (though even if he is, I'll have a nice unsigned Captain Nice #1 for my collection so I win either way). Wonder if anybody else will think to do the same?

I can't imagine Daniels charging for autographs, he certainly doesn't need the money. In last years NYCCC, I got an autograph from Joe Staton and he didn't charge but he asked for a donation.

Cei-U!, I just checked the ECCC website. They're charging $40 for a photo with Mr. Daniels (taken by a pro; selfies are $30), but there's no mention of a fee for an autograph & chat. Also no mention of when he'll be available for an autograph & chat. He probably won't be there all day; the man is 91 years old. The most expensive individual photo ops are Gwendoline Christie and Rupert Grint, at $120 each. George Takei and Matt Smith are $100. The most expensive groups are Critical Role and Stranger Things, for $190 each. Next is the Boy Meets World group, which includes William Daniels, at $155. They have two people from Star Trek Discovery, Jason Isaacs and Sonequa Martin-Green, at $150 for both or $80 for just one. Just think how many comics you could buy with that kind of money.

I don't need photographic proof that I met him (unlike Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, who I had to take a selfie with). I see Mike Grell will be there, so I'll be dropping by to chat with. Wonder if I have anything of his in my collection he hasn't signed? We'll have to investigate!

Not sure if he does it at every show, but Mike Grell was charging $5 a signature at Gem City Comic Con last spring (as was Steve Englehart). It was free if you bought a print or something from him on the item you bought, but otherwise was $5 a signature. -M

Hmm, I've seen Grell at a couple shows in the last couple of years, and what he was doing at the shows I attended was the first signature was free, and then it was $5 per book after the first, which I thought was a perfectly reasonable arrangment - especially after having been stuck in some lines with "fans" getting entire longboxes signed.

Stopped by the local Half Price Books while out and about today, and they had restocked their dollar bins, and I noticed a bunch of Milestone books in there, so I dug around a bit to see what I could find. Ended up with a small pile, and used my calendar coupon to save a bit more. I got the following:
Hardware 3, 7-9 Icon 5-7, 12-14 Shadow Cabinet 1-2 Blood Syndicate 5-9, 11-16, 24
and some non Milestone stuff: Ghost Rider (90s) 72 Star Trek ('89 DC series) 10-11, 62, Annual 4, 5 Dragonlance 19-20 Dark Horse Presents 63, 97, 105 The Batman Adventures: The Lost Years 3-5 Black Canary 5, 12

Enjoying three quiet days in a row here and got around to taking this pic of the other side of the trade with pinkfloydsound17 The Showcase #100 is extra snowy and mintish, so just that would leave me happy with the trade! I got set of these Dollar Adventure Comics... #459-466 for $23... whattayoothink? Did I do okay? Three are VF-NM (459, 465 & 466) others with a smudge on the cover ranging from VG+ to VF- (one is a very very slight smudge), but I could've paid as much for just the #461 and 462 I had on my want list. I recognize the Deadman story for #466 as it was in a best of the year DC digest i used to have, but all the rest I've never had or read before. This seems to carry on the cancelled Aquaman and All-Star Comics series I have too.
