Well they arrived today, Captain America 104 and 117, the final 2 issues I needed to complete the run from 100 to 200. I started about 3 years ago when I decided to finally get 153-157 and kept going, placing a limit due to space and budget constrictions. Sure there are 3 or 4 issues of Marvel Super Action to be able to afford some of those first 10, and there are some fairly average looking books, but they be mine...ALL MINE...mwah ha ha

Tying into my comment in the 'Feel Good' comics thread, this just arrived in the mail today: I ordered the first, 'Golden Age' volume from another vendor - it's in the mail but I'm not expecting that for at least a month (and I still haven't been able to find the 'Silver Age' volume for a price I'm willing to pay).

I especially like that storyline where the Red Skull trades bodies with Cap and it takes Cap two or three issues before he figures out he can take the mask off. I read it online and I was yelling at the screen: "Take your mask off! Stupid Star Spangled Avenger! You deserve to be gunned down by a security guard!"

Here are the Daredevils recently gotten. I think sometimes I'm conditioned to want anything with that 'Still Only 35cents' in the corner (funny I don't feel that way about DCs that are 'Still Only 20cents' or Marvel's earlier 'Still Only 25cents). While doing these I thought I haven't taken a photo of three of my favorites... never know, proof of having them for insurance perhaps? As usual apologies for the poor focus/cheap camera. First Phoenix, first Sabre-Tooth, first Black Cat. Why is Amazing Spider-Man #191 often priced higher than say #190 or 192... anyone know? I don't.

Why is Amazing Spider-Man #191 often priced higher than say #190 or 192... anyone know? I don't. Don't know, either. I remember back in the day, around 1980/81, when I ordered back issues from Lone Star's catalog, ASM #189 and 190 were a little more expensive, because they were penciled by then fan-favorite John Byrne. Also, looking at Lone Star's (i.e., mycomicshop.com's) current catalog, there doesn't seem to be any significant differences in the price of #191 compared to the immediately preceding or subsequent issues - except #194, which you have pictured, because it's the first appearance of Black Cat.

Thanks for the answer. It must've just been my bad luck when looking for that issue (seeing as I have #189 and 190) that I seemed to run into higher grade copies or something as it did always seem to be priced higher than I'd have thought it should be, that happens.

Nice acquisitions .

You mean, the #117! Cool... and congratulations! Thanks mate, I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy it, had some bucks left over from selling an omnibus and thought it was time to complete the run.

Sadly there is a lot of average Cap in that run, it seems like no-one really knew what to do with him for huge stretches of the book. From early 120s to Englehart, post-Kirby to Byrne, and post-DeMatteis to Waid are just long drives in a desert that just aspires to mediocrity, and I say this as a lifelong fan. I was sold the moment 10 year old me saw those '50s Cap issues, then the Nomad run, then Cap in the Avengers circa 170( especially the issue with him in the gym with Beast)...you get the picture. My other favourite moment is 193, the return of Kirby, with one of the most iconic covers of all.

I've been selling older unwanted trades, hardcovers, and singles to reduce the space they occupy but also to self-finance getting books I really wanted to have. So, among others I've got for myself a newer Dark Knight Returns, hardcover Watchmen, complete Preacher in the new trades, AND Sandman. I got the last 4 trades for $20 and then decided to go all out and bought Absolute 1 and 2, Dear Lord they are beautiful. Thankfully Book Depository has free delivery on top of being the cheapest retailer I can find. Paying exchange rates is bad enough but freight can double the price of a book easily. Of course the collector/completist/OCD part of me will now want to save up and get the other 2, good thing that part has good taste.

So Sunday was my first comic show of the year, and I came home with a bunch of stuff, about short box full of stuff. I spent most of the day rummaging through dollar boxes, 2/$1 boxes and 3/$1 boxes, but I did plunk down for a few pricier books. I am going to lump everything I got together rather than split between modern/classic. I posted the Craig Goldman sketchbook and the Mego Tarzan I picked up a couple days ago, so will not re-post those. There's a lot of pics, so I am going to split it up into a few posts, and add some commentary to most of it... Picked up a few issues of Amazing heroes out of a dollar box, including a Kirby focused issue... My friend Jesse (the organizer of Gem City and Champion City cons, was selling a bunch of sets for $2 a pop no matter how many issues were in the set. One of the sets I picked up form him was the 4 issue Batman/Tarzan x-over mini... One of the series I am trying to complete in floppy form rather than in trade is the 2002 Catwoman series the first half of which was written by Ed Brubaker. Some of the issues can be pricey because of the Adam Hughes covers, but I lucked into a big run of those at a Half Price Books about a year and a half ago, and I am trying to fill in the run without paying exorbitant prices per issue. I got these form a dealer who had them marked at $4-$5 a pop, but everything in his boxes was 50% off, plus I bought a big pile of stuff form him, so he knocked a bit off the total too. I also found these from the same dealer, again at $5 each but 50% off. These late 90s Conan minis from Marvel are hard to find, I've been looking for these since about 2009, and this is the first time I have seem these two in the wild. These were the last 2 of those minis I needed too... Here's a few misc. DCs. the Sandman and Blackhawk were in a $3 bronze age box, and the DC Super Stars is a bit of a minor key, the first appearance of Huntress, and can be quite pricey. This is a VG copy I got for $5 from the same dealer that had the $3 bronze age box (he also had $5 silver age box as well). a few more misc. books...the Batman B&W issue completes the mini for me, Kamandi #57 completes my Kamandi run-I thought I had completed it, but when I inventories my books I realized I was missing this issue, so it was a priority get for me, the Ghost issue was in a 3/$1 box. More to come... -M

Some misc. DC books from the 3/$1 bins... both are series I am working to complete on the cheap if I can. Some more random DC cheapies.. The Shadow issue was one of 2 I needed to finish the 80s series, Thriller, the 89 Blackhawk series and Ostrander Manhunter series are books I have wanted to read so am picking up on the cheap as I see them. With the JLA issues, I have most of the Silver Age stuff in trade, and the first 2 Bronze Age omnibi, and I have most of the issues after the Omnibi in floppy form, needing only a handful, so I decided to finish off the run in that form rather than wait and see if they do a third Bronze Age omnibus. and one more shot of misc. DC stuff form 3/$1 bins. I ran across a bunch of the Marvel Doctor Who books for $1 each, except the Marvel Premiere issue, which can be a bit pricey as it is the first American appearance of Doctor Who in comics, but the same dealer I got the Huntress issue from also had it on his wall for $5 so I added it to the pile (the Doctor Who books came form him as well). Again, I got a stack and he knocked a few bucks off the total when I was done. I picked up all but one issue of Elektra Assassin I needed to complete the run... I also picked up a bunch of Elfquest books out of the dollar boxes from the same dealer I got the Who/Huntress stuff from... and form the dealer who had everything marked 50% off, I found these three issues of Epic Illustrated, which completes the series for me. They were marked $10 each, but again 50% off, which is a much better price than I saw them online for. More to come... -M

One of the guests at the show was Jeff Austin, who I have met several time at these local shows. He is an artist who was very active in the fanzine scene, and has done a lot of stuff for AC Comics, and is the current artist on their FemForce series. I've picked up a ton of original art from him at shows, both stuff he drew and stuff by other artists he inked that I've posted here before. This show, he had some prints, and some prints for $10 each and some recent issues of FemForce for $1 each. I was going to pick up a print and the 2 FemForce issues from him, which came to $12, and I handed him$15, but it was near the end of the show and he had run out of singles, I told him to keep the change as he had always given me great deals on the original art and often threw in an extra page or piece when I bought a bunch, but because I was a regular buyer form him, he refused, and told me to take a secodn print for that $3 difference, so I wound up with 2 prints and the 2 FemFroce issues from him... This is the print I was going to get... here's the one I ended up getting for $3... and the FemForce issues... I have some of the AC Nightveil issues form the 80s indy scene and like the character, but am not familiar with th rest of the characters in the book, but for a buck each I will give them a read. I also picked up some Ghost Rider issues from the dollar bins, and one of the splurge books I got was Marvel Spotlight 6, the 2nd appearance of Ghost Rider which only ran me $10. I am also working on getting the Silver Age Hawkman stuff in floppy form. I got the last 2 issues of Atom and the Hawkman I needed... and 2 Silver Hawkman reading copies... all from the dealer offering stuff at 50% off. They ran me about $5 each after discounts. I am also tracking down the Hawkman solo strips from the Bronze Age, and got a bunch that appeared in World's Finest forma few different dealers, these were $1-$3 each... More to come... -M

If you can't tell, I like jungle themed heroes, and Ka-Zar is another I am trying to put together some runs of. I needed 4 issues of his run in Astonishing Tales, and managed to pick up 2 of them... I also needed 5 issues of the Ka-Zar the Savage series form the 80s and found 3 of them... and also found the Ka-Zar OGN from the dealer I got the Hawkman, Epics, etc. from... some more random stuff from the 3/$1 bins.. the Tarzan is a bit beat up, but a 50s book for 33 cents is hard to pass up. The TIme Warp was one of 2 I needed to finish that run. These were in the $3 Bronze boxes (though the Mandrake is Silver). The Creatures on the Loose was one of 2 of the Gulliver of Mars run I needed to finish that run off. The Hands of the Dragon only lasted 1 issue from Atlas and was one I didn't know existed until I saw it in the box even though I have most of the 70s Atlas output in comic form (not so much the magazines). More to come... -M
