I've often been fascinated by Treasure Chest, a series that regularly floods Ebay with downright weird covers, often (but not always) of a religious nature. Well I found this one in an antique shop over the weekend and just couldn't pass it up. The inside is surprisingly normal, containing regular features starring relatively grounded characters. The cover depicts a bible passage that, I guess, thematically connects to all the stories in this issue? Weird, man. Weird. I'm pretty sure that's Saint Francis actually. I mean, why would Jesus have a rosary with a crucifix? This was a Catholic publication I believe. I've seen them in passing so many times and also never been tempted, but now I'd have to say you never know...

The animals are the giveaway, as that was common iconography associated with hagiography of Francis-the ability to talk to animals. -M

File under: Don't tell the BF. Saw an online sale and decided on these to add to the '74-80 theme accumulation... Three Captain America reprint issues (to add to the Avengers issues #14-21), and one Marshall Rogers Detective.

Three Captain America reprint issues (to add to the Avengers issues #14-21), and one Marshall Rogers Detective. Can't go wrong with those Cap issues, which reprint #109 - 111. Origin retelling in 109, first two Steranko issues in the next two. Now, if they just hadn't incorporated Rick Jones, all would have been great with the world...

Rick was the best part of those issues.

Rick was the best part of those issues. I seriously need to ask shaxper why there is no "dislike" button for when people make ludicrous comments like this

Rick Jones. Fanboy supreme or Groupie extreme? Gotta admit though he did get to marry a hottie in Marlo! But Icctrombone, you left out his saving the universe during the Kree-Skrull war, his combining with Genis-Vell (like father like son), his A-Bomb time and his recent death/resurrection into another A-Bomb like form in the Immortal Hulk series or his eventual ultimate fanboy collector in the Future Imperfect with the Maestro. Poor guy just can't catch a break. From nobody to sidekick to teen heart throb to gamma monster Rick don't get no love. Sheeeeesh, what's a guy to do for some respect?!?

Gold Key's movie adaptation of FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. I really had no need or desire for this... but, I was buying the DVD, and on the same Ebay page, 3 different people were selling the comic. 2 copies for around $30... the 3rd for $6.99 on auction. And, there were NO bidders... and only 18 minutes to go. I figured... "Oh, WHY NOT??" I put in the minimum bid for it, 18 minutes later, I got it. The real selling point was it had FRED FREDERICKS art!!! Back in the 60s, we bought very few comic-books (they were a rare luxury item), but we got the papers every day. 6 days a week, MANDRAKE was my favorite adventure series!! I only just found out (thanks to my friend, artist Frank Thorne) that Fredericks only just passed away 4 years ago. According to Thorne, he drew MANDRAKE for decades and never once got a raise, never asking for one because he was rightly afraid they'd replace him with some guy overseas for much less. Which proved the case, as soon as Fredericks was out of the picture.

Funny thing-- the blog where I grabbed the above image, the guy had the entire comic to download for free. But I'm glad I got the actual physical book!

(thanks to my friend, artist Frank Thorne) I just did a fangirl squeal - and I'm a 60 year old bloke. May I touch the hem of your garment?
