More Superman books I like the Alex Ross covers Filling in the Teen Titans 2011 run. I need 2 more to complete the 30 issue series.

Dennis books have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I buy them whenever I see them. I loved this character when I was a kid.
I've been picking them up and sending them to my grandson, who really likes them. I took advantage of Hamilton Books and got these two for 75% off cover:

They have some great prices on some of those Spirit archives but they don't ship outside the US, unfortunately.

A word of advice-- if you ever run across Volume 14 of the Spirit Archives for LESS than $50, you'd better jump on it. That is far and away the most difficult volume to find... apparently it was extremely short-printed compared to the others, and commands a hefty price whenever it pops up on Ebay. I bought the entire collection in one pop, so I have mine, but I've seen this volume go for upwards of $200 if it's still sealed.

I have a personal preference for the magazine format as reprints for the original Spirit stories, esp. the Warren magazines. Doubt it will ever happen, but one day I'd love to have a full set of those.

As I mentioned upthread, I found great deals on some books I've been wanting just before and after New Year's day, and the last two books arrived today. First, there's the first volume of the Black Lightning reprints that collects the entire original series, pictured with two books that arrived earlier (the last one actually counts as a modern comic, but I didn't want to split them up): I'd been wanting the re-read the original series for some time now, and I've also been curious about the other Black Lightning series scripted by Isabella, the character's co-creator. I found all three of these quite inexpensively. Also purchased together with the first Black Lightning was Adventures of Captain America, which collects the 4-issue mini of the same title by Fabien Nicieza and Keven Maguire from the early 1990s (something else I've been wanting for the longest time now) plus the 3-issue Captain America "1940s Newspaper Strip" series by Karl Kesel:

Got this yesterday from eBay. I suspect that this may be my last Thor purchase from eBay for a while. Besides the fact that the money could go to better uses, I have had some sketchy adventures with some of the sellers. I payed for the book 2 weeks ago and the seller took his sweet time sending it. When it arrived , it was in a regular yellow envelope without any cardboard reinforcement. Anyway, this makes a straight run of Thor from 171-502.

I'd been looking for a decent price on this five issue mini-series, SpaceKnights, and glad I finally found them and they arrived in the post today. Flipping through I recognize the names Starshine and Firefall from the old Rom comics, and in fact Starshine looks the same (and is the leader). Should be a semi-nostalgic fun read! Also arrived is Timely Comics Presents: the Human Torch one-shot from 1999 reprinting the Fall 1941 Human Torch comic in simulated four-color newsprint. I think it's the best way to do these and am really glad I gave this a chance. Not read yet except for the three page text piece by Roy Thomas in the back which includes Bill Everett recounting something about it's long weekend jam of various artists to create it back in the day. This is a bit rough as result art-wise, and apparently story-wise also, but should be yet more semi-nostalgic fun for me! The new front cover is based on the original cover, which is also included in all it's glory...

I'm quite surprised that Marvel was allowed to use the Rom Characters. Rom doesn't appear and isn't even even named, so I guess Parker Brothers owns that. I wonder what use they would have for him other than to make repros of the original toy. Rom is mentioned in the letters page of #5, but not mentioned in the comic stories. Brandy the earth woman is mentioned as her son is one of the Knights, plus there are Dire Wraiths looking like they looked, and the names of some Space Knights were used in the original comics.

When Lucasfilm leased Star Wars to Marvel, they got to keep all the characters created by the series. I assume that Hasbro got the same deal, but maybe not.

Picked up a few things over the course of January, but hadn't had time to post. At Half Price Books, I picked up the first (and only) volume of the Black Canary Archives... and a handful of the Blackthorne and Gladstone Dick Tracy reprint comics... over at the used bookstore near my lcs, I raided their dollar bins and brought home a stack of issues of Detective Comics... and from Lonestar I picked up 3 volumes of the Golden Age Superman Chronicles, giving me a run of the first 8 volumes... and the last issue of Action Comics Weekly I needed (the last issue of the series)-I thought I had finished the run last year but when I was putting things away on New Years Day realized I did not have this issue.. The biggest acquisition though, was not a comic, but a comic portfolio I have wanted for several years but hadn't encountered, but one finally came in stock at Lonestar and I snagged it, Michael Golden's Doctor Strange Portfolio from the early 80s... I'll post the plates themselves in the next post if people want to see them. -M
