Ok, another lazy Sunday afternoon spent at one of my local shops... here's some of the loot.
I've never been a huge Sub-Mariner fan, but hey, silver age books in Fine+ condition for $4 apiece? I can't pass that up. Other stuff is mainly odds & ends, except for the copy of the Tales To Astonish one-shot signed by the artist (John Estes), and a VF copy of Life With Archie #60 (1st appearance of "The Archies" as a band).
Dude, those are some nice Submariner books you have including the death of Dorma. I have my eye on that Captain Marvel guest appearance, too.

@mrp, I love Angel & the Ape a lot. I have three or four scattered issues (I will track them all down one day), but I finally nabbed issue #1 for an acceptable price while I was in the U.S. last year, from Bizzaro-Wuxtry Comics in Athens, Georgia. Funnily enough, I had that issue out of my long boxes just a day or two ago and was flipping through it. Love that Bob Oksner art!

It's a series that's been on my radar for a few years now, but I never got around to starting to pick up. The first book I pulled out of the first longbox I went through was that one, a mid-grade copy of #1 for $7 (minus my discount) so I pulled the trigger since the price was right for me. It's the only issue I have so far, but I will pick up more as I find them at the right price. -M

In addition to the 8 Silver Age issues, the '90s four-issue mini-series is also really fun and worth picking up if you see it for cheap. The Vertigo re-imagining/re-boot from 2001 or thereabouts...not so much.

Made a trip out to my lcs today on my day off, and had a little birthday money in my pocket from last week so I did some digging through their back issue bins. Tony had just bought 3 or 4 collections of older stuff and had only gotten 3 longboxes of stuff out and priced, but there were a few treasures for me within. And as a pull list customer, my 15% discount applies to back issues as well, so I came out with a pile o'stuff... How can you resist a beatnik Gorilla jamming on his instrument while everyone grooves baby? Angel & the Ape #1 1st appearance of Anthro in Showcase... Atom #9 great Creeper cover... two of the four issues I needed to wrap up that Doctor Fate run Alex Toth art... Three more Kirby Fourth World books... Some Phantom issues... one of three issues of Phantom Stranger needed to complete the run... a pair of late 60s Red Circle heroes books... Silver Age Spectre... some Spirit issues... some early-mid 50s Dell Tarzans... and an upgrade on Weird Worlds #1, my copy is missing about a quarter of the cover, now I have a complete one... -M That's quite a nice haul for an afternoon! You've got a bunch of my likes covered-- I daresay if we went hunting together, an altercation would ensue as we'd be fighting over oddball books like a couple of Black Friday shoppers!
Angel and the Ape aside, I also think that Anthro is an underrated, quirky little title. It's actually much better than most people think. And I'd love to run into a cache of Phantom books-- both Charlton and Western!
I don't know if those are your first issues of Mighty Comics Presents, but that title has some really weird stories. The scripting is almost as if they attempted to use the Marvel Method of writing by having the book drawn first, but then just handed it to the building janitor to come up with the final dialogue. I've been working on a run of that title, as it's sometimes a perfect example of a good idea gone astray.
And it's always nice to see a fellow Spirit fanatic!👍

My focus on the Red Circle heroes has mostly been on the early 80s revival, but I happened across those in the box of new arrivals so picked them up. I've been a big Spirit fan since I first got into Eisner in general in the mid-late 90s. And there was a bigger stash of Phantom (and Spirit) issues at the shop but I found them near the end of my rummaging and my budget was near maxed out. I'll see if they are still there next trip. There was also a huge run of the Dell and Gold Key Tarzan series I may pick more up from, but I just cherry-picked a few covers I liked this time around as I din't have my list of Dell/Gold Key issues I own accessible this trip. -M

I'm kind of proud of this pickup on eBay. I think this book flew under the radar for customers as I was the only bidder. It was 20 dollars for the first appearance of the Destroyer and it was in surprisingly nice shape for the price. I would say around a 5.0 How many issues do you still need?

Originally I wanted to acquire the Thor run from 126-502. I finished that over a month ago. Now I'm seeing how far in the Journey into mystery issues ( 83-125) I can go without going broke. I need 27 in total. I doubt I'll get #83 , that's thousands of dollars , and some of the others that I am missing are in the hundreds for each book.

A cover loose copy of Mister Miracle #12 arrived in the post today. The first English language comic I have bought for weeks. It was cheap (£3) and the loose cover doesn't matter because it's going to get bound into a book when I've finished the run.

I would think, if you're not picky about condition, that most of those might be gotten affordably. Not that I've priced them or anything, but I remember buying Journey Into Mystery #113 affordably many years ago, though so many years ago that I don't remember what I paid for it. It's certainly not in very good condition, but nothing's missing and hey, I have it.

Affordably is under 30 dollars. But even that adds up.

Affordably is under 30 dollars. But even that adds up. We have a different concept on what we call affordability Icc. I'm strongly in the $5-10 camp of purchasers. If paying higher prices, for me it is for getting brand new reprints in TPB's or Omnibus formats. Don't mind dropping $100 for an Omni collecting 25+ issues but $30 or more in many cases for a singular old comic does not compute. That is just my own personal quirk I readily admit.

I guess I’m referring to just buying SA Thor’s. I usually hate paying more than 2 dollars in shows.

You're not alone. I get the shakes if I think about spending more than a fiver on an individual comic.
