Didn't mean to come across in any way as blaming the inkers, just to offer a possible reason why Chaykin<s Star Wars artwork for Marvel looked so different from solo stuff like Empire - because you can see even in some of his early self-inked Marvel work, it looked much different from the SW. But obviously if he says himself that he didn't give of his best on SW I'll take his word for it. You know, for years SW #1 was my only exposure to the look of Chaykin's work and when I first started frequenting this community, back in the old CBR days, I couldn't believe how much love he got for his comics work from some people. To me he was always that artist who did the scratchy, scribbly art on SW #1 that I disliked so much as a kid. Then I saw some of his other work and realised what the fuss was all about and also realised that his SW work was sub-par.

As a general rule, I never blame the artists, pencillers or inkers, for sub-par work if I've seen them do better : I usually put it down to the factory-system of churning out another 20 pages month after month. But of course sometimes it could have been due to lack of interest or effort or what have you. Just like some thefts happen because the culprit is a greedy little prick, but statistically most of it is down to systemic socio-economic problems like wealth disparity and so on. And all those personal and systemic factors can be intermingled, making it even more complicated.

So I broke down and made my first purchase via ebay in almost 14 years. I decided to look for a copy of DNAgents 24, and didn't find one at a price I liked for the shape it was in, but I did find nice copies of two other Dave Stevens covers that were on my want list to complete runs at decent prices and since I had a $5 ebay coupon and I could combine shipping, I decided to pull the trigger. These should arrive some time next week...World of Wood #1 and Vanguard Illustrated #2 -M I am pleasantly surprised. These were due to arrive Friday or Saturday this week according to shipping estimates and arrived this afternoon. I haven't used ebay in over a decade because of all the headaches it entailed as both a buyer and seller, but this was a very pleasant experience, and I am reconsidering my views o ebay. I actually have a bid in on a copy of DNAGents 24 on an auction that ends tomorrow. We will see how that goes before I make any rash conclusions, but this was a good first step back for the ebay experience. -M

It's a little more than I wanted to pay, but a lot less than I have seen it go for. I've been trying to complete the DNAgents run since 2013, and this has been the only missing issue since 2014, so I am at the point where I will expand what I am willing to pay to finish it off. Of course, sometimes I am slow on the uptake, and it took me until 2016 to put together the fact it was a Dave Stevens cover with the reason why I was having trouble fining this one issue. With it being the final issue of the run, I just assumed it had been ordered less and thus was harder to find, but no, Stevens, DUH! -M

I think Evanier and Spiegle did a great job on the title. Sure, like lots of stuff from every decade, it looks a bit dated now, but it was a fresh and enjoyable read during it's tenure.
EDIT: When I was thinking of Spiegle, I was actually thinking about the companion title, Crossfire, which was also quite good.

Wasn't Spiegle on Crossfire? I thought DNAGents was WillMeuginot, at least for the first part of the series. Was Spiegle the artist who took over? I am lazy and don't want to go check on GCD -M

Welp, I won the auction after breaking down and deciding to pay what it took to get a copy. It wasn't a horrible price, under my impulse buy threshold when I go to cons, so I can live with it, and I now have the book (once it arrives) I have been searching for in earnest since 2013... Now it's just waiting for it to ship and arrive. -M

And lookie there-- whaddya know... Dan Spiegle on interior pencils... Actually, after Will Meugniot left the book, it was pretty much a revolving door on the artwork for DNAgents Vol. 1.

You're killing me. How much did it come out to ? Edit: never mind. I did a completed sale search on eBay. I saw a lot of copies for under 30. That's not too bad for something you really have to have.

I bought DNAgents for the first dozen or so issues, it was on a par with Teen Titans and The New Mutants of the same time. I did and still do have a lot of the early '80s comics with Dave Stevens art or covers but I never made it to #24 on DNAgents, maybe that's why it's priced higher as so many didn't buy it then? I wonder what Stevens covers are the hardest to find? I have a 3-D Sheena Blackthorne put out and am thinking maybe that one?
A few '70s comics trickling in for me I'd never read before are Marvel Two-In-One #67 and 68, Marvel Super Action #7 (Capt. A) and #22 (although I did read that Avengers in the original '60s Marvel), and Superboy & Legion #245 & 246.

With shipping it came to $20 which is my ceiling for impulse buys at cons, so for a book that I've been hunting for a while, I'm ok with it. I am still mostly a bargain hunter, but I've been working overtime for several straight weeks and have been doing a little splurging as retail therapy. -M
